Table of Contents
Each tin diorama in this set opens like a tiny stage, a vintage biscuit, tea, cocoa, seed or button tin with its lid tipped back to show a cosy room and a woman busy with something she loves inside. They print flat onto one sheet each, ready to cut out and glue onto a card front or tuck into a junk journal spread, and no two tins hold the same little story.
Print on matte cardstock at actual size, leave a thin white edge around each shape as you cut, and keep small scissors or a craft knife handy for the fiddly inner corners. Work through the set in any order: start with the biscuit tin kitchen if you want something familiar, or jump straight to the candle tin chapel if you are making a card for someone who likes a quieter scene.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Baking And Kitchens
Picture this one as the card that opens the whole set: a round biscuit tin tipped open like a little stage, where an elderly woman in a tartan apron lifts a tray of shortbread from the oven while heather hills roll away behind her window.
It suits a grandmother who still bakes for everyone at Christmas, or a friend who always has the kettle on. Mount it on kraft cardstock with a thin strip of tartan ribbon along the bottom edge for a card that feels handed down rather than printed.
Opens the lunch tin into a warm farmhouse kitchen where a young woman wraps bread and apples for the fields, with wheat stretching gold behind her through the window.
Settles a spice tin into a kitchen hung with bay leaves and cinnamon sticks, where an elderly woman stirs a slow stew while an olive grove stretches behind the window.
Try it paired with the shortbread kitchen above for a matching set of two cards, one warm and homely for a grandmother, one spiced and far-off for a friend who loves to cook. Colour the cinnamon sticks a deeper rust by hand if you want them to stand out from the page.
Making And Mending
Threading a needle beside pincushions and spools of lace, a young woman sits in a sewing tin studio while a rainy town glimmers through the window behind her.
Sorts a lifetime of buttons into glass jars in a snug button tin parlor, where an elderly woman works beside her sewing basket as snowy chimneys smoke outside the window.
This one anchors a journal spread about mending and keeping things, a good page for scraps of real buttons or ribbon tucked beside the print. Those who enjoy stitched paper crafts might also like a look at this sewing themed junk journal for more spools and pattern paper to go with it.
Plants spring bulbs into little clay pots inside a seed tin potting shed, a robin perched companionably on the handle of her spade while a vegetable patch waits behind the window.
Art And Quiet Rooms
Puts a paint tin to work as a tiny studio where a young woman stands at her easel finishing a seascape, cliffs and sailboats drifting past the window behind her.
Lighting votive candles before a small arched window, a young woman kneels in a candle tin chapel while a starry valley glows behind the glass.
Keep this one for a quieter card, a note of comfort for someone going through a hard season. Add a touch of gold glitter glue to the flame tips by hand once the print is dry, just enough to catch the light without overdoing it.
Nestles a harp among plump cushions inside a sweets tin music room, a young woman playing softly while a moonlit garden spreads out behind the window glass.
Rest And Evening
Settling under a patchwork quilt with her cat curled beside her, an elderly woman sleeps soundly in a mint tin bedroom while a crescent moon hangs over distant rooftops.
Mending fishing nets by the glow of a small stove, an elderly couple settle into their evening in a fishing tackle tin cabin while a misty loch stretches out behind the window.
Give this one to a grandfather’s card for once, slipped in alongside one of the kitchen scenes for a pair that reads like a couple’s cottage. The net can be coloured in cross-hatched grey pencil to add texture without much extra drawing.
Shops And Trades
Scoops loose tea leaves into paper bags behind the counter of a tea tin shop, an elderly shopkeeper working steadily while a sunny harbor sparkles through the window.
Whisks hot chocolate for a steady stream of skaters in a cocoa tin cafe, a young woman working the counter while a frozen lake glints with twirling figures behind the glass.
Wrapping toffees into neat paper twists behind the counter, an elderly couple run their toffee tin sweet shop together while a seaside pier stretches out behind the window glass.
Measuring dried herbs into glass jars behind a small wooden counter, an elderly apothecary works quietly in a pastille tin shop while a busy market street carries on behind the window.
Grinding fresh beans at a counter fitted with a brass scale, a young couple keep their coffee tin roastery busy while a crowded square carries on behind the window.
This one suits a journal page about mornings and small rituals, a nice anchor for a strip of real coffee-coloured washi tape along one edge. Mount it slightly raised on foam dots so the counter edge casts a small shadow on the page.
Celebrations And Gatherings
Serving sponge cake to two old friends at a small table, an elderly hostess fills her cake tin tea party with laughter while a rose arbor blooms behind the window.
Decorating sugar cookies beside a tiny lit tree, a young woman fills the cookie tin Christmas parlor with icing bags and ribbon while snowy hills roll past the window behind her.
Send it to a daughter or granddaughter who loves baking at the holidays, mounted on red cardstock with a mat of cream underneath for contrast. For more small Christmas card ideas to go alongside it, browse these Christmas card painting ideas for handmade cards worth keeping.
What to Do Next
Pick one tin to start with, print it at actual size on matte cardstock, and glue it onto a card base raised on foam dots to see the little room lift forward. Once you have a favourite, work through the rest of the set at your own pace and keep the extras for a junk journal spread.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for printing these tin dioramas?
Matte cardstock around 200 to 250 gsm works best for these tin dioramas, since it holds crisp edges when cut and takes glue without buckling. Avoid glossy photo paper, which resists adhesive and shows fingerprints along the cut lines.
What printer settings give the sharpest result?
Print at actual size or 100 percent scale, never fit to page, so proportions between the tin and the little room inside stay correct. Choose the best photo or highest quality setting your printer offers for the cleanest lines.
How do I make a tin diorama look three dimensional on a card?
Print the sheet twice, cut the inner room scene out of one copy, and raise it on foam adhesive dots inside the outer tin shape from the second copy. This lifts the little room forward and gives the whole scene real depth.
What card size suits these tin diorama prints?
A standard A2 card base around 4.25 by 5.5 inches suits most of these tin shapes comfortably, with room left for a mat or a border of ribbon. Larger tins like the sweet shop or tea party may sit better on a square card base instead.
Can these dioramas go into a junk journal instead of a card?
Yes, trim the diorama to fit a journal page and glue it flat, or tuck it under a flap cut into the page so it opens like a tiny door. Pair it with scraps of fabric, lace or ribbon that match its little story.
