36 Dessert Painting Ideas for Patisserie Windows, Fancy Cakes and Sweet Little Plates

36

Dessert painting is one of the sweetest ways to fill a sketchbook, because every subject already looks good before you even pick up a brush. A glossy tart, a stack of macarons, a swan made of choux pastry: these are small, forgiving shapes with built in color and shine, perfect for a cheerful painting session that does not ask for hours at the easel.

Below you will find 36 bakery scenes, from a simple slice on a plate to a full patisserie window, each one built to finish today in soft gouache. Work through them in order if you like, from the easiest spoonful to the busiest shop counter, or just pick whichever one makes you hungry first.

Start big with a patisserie window, since a whole shop front gives you the most room to relax into flat gouache shapes before anything gets fiddly. Block in the window frame first with a pale mint or dusty pink rectangle, then paint three or four shelves as simple horizontal bands across it.

Lay the eclairs down as fat rounded rectangles, evenly spaced along each shelf, using a ruler edge or a strip of paper as a guide so they line up. Paint the chocolate tops first in one solid stroke, then add a thin cream drizzle on top with a liner brush once the base is dry.

This is where proportion work pays off: compare the width of one eclair to the width of the whole window and keep that ratio consistent across every shelf, or the back row will look oddly huge.

If the eclairs start looking uneven, straighten them up with a thin white gouache line along each shelf edge. Today’s tip: paint the window glass last, in a very pale wash, so the pastries underneath stay the star of the page.

You Will Need

• ruler or straight edge

Palette: Dusty Pink, Vanilla Cream, Chocolate Brown, Mint Green

Move from a shop window to a single pistachio raspberry tart sitting on a plate, a calmer subject to warm your hand up on. Paint the plate as a simple pale oval first, then drop in the tart shell as a warm golden brown circle just inside its rim.

Fill the center with pistachio cream in a soft green, then place raspberries around the top in loose overlapping dots rather than perfect circles, since real berries are never quite round. Finish with a few thin lines of white gouache for the glaze shine.

The easiest way to keep the tart from looking flat is a quick ten minute version with just three tones: shell, cream, berries. Give yourself forty minutes instead and you can add a soft shadow under the tart and a crumb or two scattered on the plate for a lived in feel.

If your raspberries bleed into the cream, let the green layer dry fully first; that single pause saves the whole painting.

Palette: Pistachio Green, Raspberry Pink, Golden Tart Shell, Vanilla Cream

Coconut cream pie is all about texture, so this is a good place to slow down and practice peaks. Paint the pie base as a wide tan circle for the crust, then build the filling in a creamy off-white dome that fills most of the plate.

For the meringue-style peaks on top, load your brush with thick vanilla gouache and dab rather than stroke, twisting the brush slightly as you lift it to leave a soft point. Work from the center outward so the peaks naturally get smaller toward the edge.

Toast the tips with a dry brush loaded with just a little brown paint, dragging it lightly across the highest points only so the toasting looks sun-kissed rather than burnt. This dry brush trick is the one hands-on skill worth practicing before you move to trickier desserts later in this list.

Keep a damp cloth handy to lift paint if a peak gets too dark; a light touch rescues it instantly.

Palette: Toasted Coconut, Vanilla White, Tan Pie Crust, Soft Brown

Try a stiff, almost dry brush for the toasted tips; too much water flattens the peaks into a smooth dome instead of a toasted texture.

A spoon cracking into creme brulee brings in a little action, which makes it a fun next step after three still desserts. Paint the ramekin first as a short, wide oval dish in a soft white or pale blue, then fill it with a warm custard yellow.

The caramelized top is a thin, almost glassy layer of amber brown painted over the custard once it’s dry, leaving a few jagged gaps where the spoon has already broken through. Paint the spoon at an angle, tip resting just inside one crack, with a short confident stroke for the handle.

Eye level matters here: keep the dish at a gentle three-quarter angle rather than straight from above, so the broken sugar crust actually reads as a surface rather than a flat pattern. Light should come from one side so the spoon casts a soft shadow across the custard.

If your caramel layer looks too solid, scratch a few thin highlight lines into it with the end of your brush handle while it’s still slightly wet.

Palette: Caramel Amber, Custard Yellow, Pale Blue Dish, Soft Grey

Tiramisu in a small glass cup is a lovely lesson in layers, since the whole charm of the subject is seeing stripes through clear glass. Paint the glass outline first in a thin grey line, then fill it in bands from the bottom up: coffee-soaked sponge, pale mascarpone cream, sponge again, cream again.

Keep each stripe a slightly uneven line rather than a ruler-straight one, since that unevenness is what sells the glass illusion. Finish with a dusting of cocoa on top, stippled on with the very tip of a dry brush.

If this is your first time painting through glass, leave a thin vertical strip of white paper unpainted down one side of the cup to suggest the shine of the glass catching light. That single highlight does more than careful shading ever could.

No small glass brush on hand? A cotton bud dipped in gouache stipples the cocoa dust just as well as a brush tip.

Palette: Coffee Brown, Mascarpone Cream, Cocoa Dust, Soft Grey

After a glass full of stripes, a vintage heart cake gives you a chance to paint something frillier and a little romantic. Sketch the heart shape lightly first in pencil, keeping both lobes even by folding your paper in half to check the symmetry before you commit to paint.

Paint the cake body in a soft strawberry pink, then let it dry before piping on the frills: small white gouache loops around the top edge and down the center seam, each loop the same size as its neighbor.

A tiny flourish of white gel pen over the dried paint adds the lace-like piping detail that makes this cake feel vintage rather than plain. Try this as a quick ten minute cake with just the pink base and simple dots, or spend forty minutes adding a ribbon border and a few sugar pearls for a fuller piece.

Keep your frill dots small and close together; spaced too far apart, they read as polka dots instead of piping.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Strawberry Pink, Vanilla White, Soft Gold, Blush Pink

A Paris-Brest on a cake stand is really two simple shapes stacked together: a ring of choux pastry and a stand beneath it. Paint the stand first as a slim pedestal shape in a pale color so it reads as glass or porcelain, then add the pastry ring on top in a warm golden brown.

Split the ring with a thin darker line through the middle to show where it’s sliced open, then fill that gap with a pale praline cream peeking through. A scatter of flaked almonds along the top, painted as small cream slivers, finishes the texture.

Compare the width of the ring to the width of the stand beneath it before you paint either in full color: the pastry should sit comfortably within the stand’s edge, not hang over it, or the whole piece looks unbalanced.

If the ring comes out lopsided, a thin outline in warm brown gouache over the top can even out the curve without a full repaint.

Palette: Golden Choux, Praline Cream, Soft Grey Stand, Toasted Almond

Pavlova piled with berries rewards a loose hand, so let go of neat edges here. Build the meringue base as a wide, cloud-like mound with uneven bumps around the edge, dabbing the brush rather than stroking it to keep that broken, crisp texture.

Once the white base is dry, pile berries across the top in loose clusters of raspberries, blueberries and sliced strawberries, letting a few tumble down the sides for movement. A light drizzle of white gouache cream between the berries ties the pile together.

Light should come from above and slightly to one side here, since that’s what gives the meringue its soft shadowed dips and makes the berries look glossy rather than flat. Leave small bright gaps of untouched white paper on the berries facing the light.

Swap a toothbrush for your round brush if you want a light berry juice spatter across the plate; flick gently and test on scrap paper first.

You Will Need

• toothbrush for splatter (optional)

Palette: Meringue White, Raspberry Red, Blueberry Blue, Strawberry Pink

A slice of Basque cheesecake is wonderfully forgiving because its whole charm is a deliberately burnt, uneven top. Cut your slice shape as a simple wedge, then fill the body with a creamy pale custard color.

Paint the top edge in a darker caramelized brown, dragging the brush unevenly so some patches are nearly black and others barely toasted, which is exactly how the real thing looks. Let the sides stay pale and smooth by contrast, so the dark top really pops.

If the first ten minutes gives you a simple flat wedge with two tones, spend forty minutes instead adding a thin crack line across the burnt top and a slightly wobbly, soft-set look to the cut edge, since Basque cheesecake is famously a little underbaked in the middle.

A damp sponge dabbed over a too-dark top lightens it back down without streaking.

Palette: Burnt Caramel, Creamy Custard, Soft Tan, Pale Vanilla

Mille-feuille being cut with a knife is about layers and a little drama, so build it from the bottom up in distinct bands: golden pastry, cream, pastry, cream, topped with a final pastry sheet. Keep each pastry layer slightly flaky at the edges with a few broken, jagged strokes rather than a clean line.

Paint the knife at a diagonal, blade just pressing into the top layer, since that angle is what tells the whole cutting story. A little cream should look like it’s just beginning to squeeze out from the pressure point.

If this is your first time painting layered pastry, exaggerate the flakiness of the top layer with short cream-colored dashes over the brown base; real mille-feuille pastry shatters rather than slices neatly, and a few scattered flakes on the plate sell that.

No silver gouache for the knife blade? A thin line of white with a grey shadow underneath reads as metal just as well.

Palette: Golden Pastry, Vanilla Cream, Soft Grey, Pale Icing White

Following a sliced pastry, a tower of profiteroles is a nice change of pace since it’s really just a pile of small circles. Paint the back row of puffs first in a soft golden brown, slightly overlapping, then layer rows in front progressively lower and larger as the tower narrows toward the bottom.

Drizzle a glossy chocolate sauce over the whole pile last, letting it pool unevenly over some puffs and barely touch others, which keeps the tower looking natural rather than uniform. A few loose white gouache dots suggest cream peeking from the seams.

Comparing the size of your front-row puffs to your back-row puffs is the trick that keeps this tower believable: the front ones should look noticeably closer and larger, not just lower on the page.

Today’s tip: paint the chocolate drizzle with a liner brush in one continuous, slightly wavering line rather than lots of short strokes, for a far more convincing pour.

Palette: Golden Choux, Chocolate Drizzle, Vanilla Cream, Soft Brown

Chocolate lava cake with ice cream turns on one satisfying moment: the molten center spilling out. Paint the cake as a short, dark cylinder first, then once it’s dry, cut a rough crack across the top and flood a warmer, glossier brown through the gap and down one side to suggest the lava flow.

Add a scoop of ice cream beside it as a soft rounded shape in cool white or pale vanilla, with a slight melt line where it meets the warm plate.

Light and heat work together here: the molten chocolate should be the warmest, brightest brown on the page, while the ice cream stays coolest, and that contrast is what makes the cake look like it’s just come out of the oven. Place your light source slightly behind the scoop so it catches a soft highlight.

If the lava flow dries too flat, a final glossy line of white gouache along its top edge brings back the shine.

Palette: Dark Chocolate, Molten Brown, Vanilla Ice Cream, Warm Plate Tan

A fruit tart with glossy glaze is a chance to focus purely on shine, which is the one extra skill worth isolating here. Lay the tart shell and cream base down first and let them dry completely before arranging the fruit, since any wet mixing will dull the glaze later.

Arrange kiwi, strawberry and blueberry slices in neat concentric rings, overlapping slightly, working from the outer edge of the tart inward. Once the fruit is dry, paint a thin, even layer of diluted white or pale yellow gouache over the whole top, which mimics the glaze and softens the colors just slightly underneath.

Finish with tiny dots of pure white gouache on the highest points of each fruit slice for the glossy highlight, placed consistently as if lit from the same direction.

If your glaze layer streaks, apply it in one quick, confident pass rather than going back over it repeatedly.

Palette: Kiwi Green, Strawberry Red, Blueberry Blue, Vanilla Cream

Mix a tiny amount of white into your glaze wash rather than using it clear; a pure wash can look watery while a slightly milky one reads as real glaze shine.

A stack of crepes with chocolate sauce is mostly about soft, rounded edges and one good drizzle. Paint each crepe as a slightly folded, pale golden circle, stacking three or four with gentle overlap so each one peeks out from under the last.

Keep the crepe edges a little uneven and curled rather than perfectly round, since that softness is what makes them look thin and delicate instead of like pancakes. Once the stack is dry, pour the chocolate sauce over the top in one loose, wandering line that drips down one side.

Here’s the quick version: ten minutes gets you the stack and a simple drizzle. Give it forty and you can add a dusting of powdered sugar in tiny white dots and a few berries tucked beside the stack for color.

If the stack looks too flat, a thin grey shadow line under each crepe edge instantly adds the separation you need.

Palette: Golden Crepe, Chocolate Sauce, Powdered Sugar White, Soft Berry Red

Panna cotta with berry sauce is a gentle subject built almost entirely from a soft wobble and one pool of color. Paint the dessert as a pale, slightly domed cylinder on a small plate, smooth and creamy with barely any texture inside the shape itself.

Once it’s dry, pool a deep berry sauce around the base, letting it spread unevenly rather than in a perfect ring, and let a thin trail run up one side of the panna cotta itself as if just poured.

To vary this one next time, try it in a tall glass instead of unmolded on a plate, or swap the berry sauce for a caramel or passionfruit pool for a completely different color story using the same simple shape.

Keep the panna cotta’s edge soft by blending it gently into the plate color while both are still a little damp, rather than leaving a hard outline.

Palette: Vanilla Panna Cotta, Berry Sauce Red, Soft Pink Plate, Cream White

A box of pastel petit fours is a lovely exercise in tiny, repeated shapes without ever getting fussy. Paint the box first as a simple open container, then fill it with a grid of small squares and rounds, each one a different soft pastel color: mint, lilac, blush and butter yellow.

Keep every petit four the same basic size so the grid feels tidy, then vary only the top decoration on each: a dot, a thin stripe, a tiny flower shape. This repetition with small variation is what makes a box like this satisfying to look at.

If this is your first time painting a grid, lightly pencil in even rows before any paint touches the page, since a wobbly grid is much harder to fix after the color goes down.

No box shape handy to copy? A simple rounded rectangle with a slightly darker inner edge reads perfectly well as a petit four box.

Palette: Mint Pastel, Lilac Pastel, Blush Pastel, Butter Yellow

After a box of small sweets, an affogato in a small glass is a quick, satisfying single subject. Paint the glass as a simple short tumbler shape, then fill the lower half with a scoop of pale vanilla ice cream, slightly melting at the base where it meets the glass.

Pour the espresso over the top as a warm, darker brown that pools and streaks down into the ice cream rather than sitting as a flat layer, since that streaking is the whole visual story of the dessert.

Eye level matters even on a small subject like this: keep the glass at a gentle front-on angle so the melting streaks inside read clearly, rather than from directly above where they’d disappear.

If your espresso pour looks too even, drag a dry brush lightly through it once dry to break up the color and suggest a little melt.

Palette: Vanilla Ice Cream, Espresso Brown, Pale Glass Grey, Warm Cream

Baked Alaska with flames brings a bit of theatre to the page, so let the flame be the brightest thing in the whole painting. Build the dessert first as a tall, toasted meringue dome over a pale cake base, using the same dabbing technique from the pavlova earlier in this list to get that toasted, textured surface.

Once it’s fully dry, paint small flickering flames rising from the top in warm orange and yellow, keeping the shapes loose and slightly irregular since real flame never sits still.

Where the light sits changes everything here: let the flame cast a warm orange glow across the meringue closest to it, fading to cooler white further down the dome, so the whole piece feels genuinely lit from that one point.

If the flames look too solid, soften their edges by dragging a clean damp brush just outside each one while the paint is still wet.

Palette: Toasted Meringue, Flame Orange, Flame Yellow, Pale Cake Base

Sticky toffee pudding with cream is a cozy, warm-toned subject after the drama of flames. Paint the pudding itself as a soft, slightly domed brown square or round, letting the color pool a little darker at the base where the toffee sauce has soaked in.

Pour the toffee sauce generously over the top once the pudding base is dry, letting it drip unevenly down the sides onto the plate. Add a soft dollop of cream beside or on top, painted in a few loose curved strokes rather than one flat shape so it keeps some texture.

If this is your first time with a pooling sauce like this, work wet-on-dry: let the pudding dry fully first, then drop the sauce on top so the two colors stay distinct instead of muddying together.

No toffee brown in your set? Mix burnt sienna with a touch of black for a close match.

Palette: Toffee Brown, Caramel Sauce, Cream White, Warm Plate Tan

Madeleines on a plate with tea brings in a second object, so this is a good moment to practice simple grouping. Paint three or four madeleines first, each as a small golden shell shape with a gentle ridge line down the center, slightly overlapping on the plate.

Add the teacup and saucer beside them as simple rounded shapes, keeping the cup smaller than you’d expect so the madeleines stay the clear focus of the page. A thin curl of steam rising from the cup, painted in pale grey, adds warmth without much extra work.

Comparing the size of the teacup to a single madeleine is the trick that keeps the whole grouping in proportion: the cup should sit roughly level with two madeleines placed side by side, not tower over them.

If the shell ridges look too mechanical, vary the spacing slightly on each one for a more natural, handmade look.

Palette: Golden Madeleine, Soft Pink Plate, Pale Blue Cup, Steam Grey

A tray of caneles is all about that deep, nearly black caramelized shell with a pale interior just visible at the top. Paint each canele as a small fluted cylinder, slightly narrower at the base, working the dark caramel brown from the bottom up and leaving the very top rim a touch paler where the custard shows.

Line several up on a simple tray or board, keeping the spacing even but not perfectly ruler-straight, since a tray of handmade pastries always has small natural variation.

Here’s the quick version: ten minutes gets you a tidy row of fluted shapes in two tones. Spend forty instead and add the fluted ridges on each one with a fine dry brush line, plus a soft shadow beneath the tray to ground it on the table.

If the dark caramel looks flat, a thin streak of warm reddish brown along one edge of each canele adds the gloss real caramelized sugar has.

Palette: Deep Caramel, Custard Yellow, Warm Reddish Brown, Pale Wood Tray

A donut wall in a cafe is one of the busier scenes on this list, so build it in clear stages rather than all at once. Paint the wall panel first as a simple pale backdrop with small evenly spaced pegs, using a light pencil grid to keep the spacing even before any color goes down.

Hang a donut on each peg as a simple ring shape with a different glaze color and topping: pink with sprinkles, chocolate with a drizzle, plain glazed with a shine line. Varying the toppings across the wall is what keeps a repeated shape like this interesting to look at.

If this is your first time with a grid this size, work one full row at a time left to right rather than jumping around, so your spacing and color balance stay consistent across the whole wall.

No pegboard reference handy? Simple evenly spaced dots behind each donut suggest the pegs just as well.

Palette: Pink Glaze, Chocolate Glaze, Plain Glaze, Pale Wall

A slice of carrot cake with a tiny sugar carrot is a satisfying return to a single, calmer subject after the busy donut wall. Paint the cake slice as a wedge first, layering warm orange-brown cake with thin cream frosting bands between, then speckle the cake body with tiny darker dots for texture before it fully dries.

The sugar carrot on top is the fun detail: a small bright orange cone shape with a tiny green stem, painted last so it sits crisp and clean against the softer cake beneath it.

Vary this one next time by swapping the carrot for a tiny sugar leaf or flower, using the same cake base in a completely different season’s decoration.

If the cake layers blur together, let each one dry fully before adding the next frosting band on top.

Palette: Carrot Cake Orange, Cream Frosting, Sugar Carrot Orange, Leaf Green

A churro cone in a cup with chocolate dip is mostly about ridged texture, which makes it a nice one to pair with the earlier dry brush practice. Paint two or three churros standing up in a small paper-style cup, each as a long ridged cylinder dusted with cinnamon sugar.

Get the ridges with a fine brush dragged lightly down the length of each churro in slightly wavy parallel lines, rather than perfectly straight ones, since that waviness reads as the piped dough texture. A small pot of chocolate dip sits beside the cup, painted as a simple dark round with a glossy highlight dot.

If this is your first time with ridged texture, practice the line technique on scrap paper first until the lines feel loose and confident rather than careful and stiff.

Swap the chocolate dip for a caramel one if you’d rather keep the whole palette warmer and lighter.

Palette: Golden Churro, Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate Dip, Pale Cup

A jelly mold wobbling on a plate is a fun, slightly silly subject that leans entirely on shine and a sense of movement. Paint the mold shape first, a fluted dome in a bright translucent color like raspberry pink or orange, keeping the color flat and glossy rather than textured since jelly has almost no surface detail at all.

Suggest the wobble with a few thin curved highlight lines running down the sides, placed slightly off from where you’d expect a static object’s highlights to sit, which tricks the eye into reading movement.

Light hits this subject in one key way: a single bright white gouache dot near the top catches the glossy highlight, and everything else on the mold should stay a flat, even color so that one dot really pops.

If the mold looks too solid and matte, add the white highlight last, once everything else is completely dry.

Palette: Raspberry Jelly, Orange Jelly, Pale Plate, Highlight White

Banoffee pie with banana slices builds on the same toffee skills from the pudding earlier in this list, so it should feel familiar by now. Paint the pie base first as a round shell filled with a thick toffee layer, then let it dry completely before laying banana slices in a loose fan across the top.

Keep the banana slices slightly irregular ovals, a touch browned at the edges, rather than perfect circles, since real banana slices never stay bright yellow for long. A generous dollop of cream sits in the center, with a light dusting of chocolate shavings scattered on top.

Comparing the size of a banana slice to the width of the whole pie keeps the fan arrangement readable: each slice should be roughly a sixth of the pie’s diameter, so the fan doesn’t overcrowd the top.

If the toffee layer looks too flat, a few darker streaks dragged through it while wet give it instant depth.

Palette: Toffee Brown, Banana Yellow, Cream White, Chocolate Shavings

Trifle in a glass bowl takes the layering idea from the tiramisu earlier and pushes it further, since a trifle usually has four or five visible bands. Paint the glass bowl outline first, then fill it from the bottom up: sponge, custard, berries, cream, and a final scatter of berries or sprinkles on top.

Keep each layer’s edge slightly uneven where it meets the glass, since a trifle is spooned in rather than poured in neat lines, and that imperfection is what makes it look homemade and inviting.

If this is your first time painting several stacked layers, work from the bottom and let each one dry before adding the next, otherwise the colors will bleed together through the glass and the whole bowl turns muddy.

No large bowl shape to reference? A simple wide oval narrowing slightly toward the base reads as a glass bowl perfectly well.

Palette: Sponge Yellow, Custard Yellow, Berry Red, Cream White

A choux pastry swan is one of the more charming subjects here, built from the same golden choux color used in the profiteroles and Paris-Brest earlier. Paint the body first as a plump oval filled with cream, then add the two wing halves on top as thin curved pastry pieces, slightly angled up like open wings.

The neck is the trickiest part: paint it as a thin S-curve of pastry attached at the front of the body, finishing in a small pointed head. If this is your first time with a curved shape like this, sketch the S-curve lightly in pencil first and check it from a small distance before committing to paint, since a neck that’s too straight loses the swan shape entirely.

Dust the whole thing with a little powdered sugar in tiny white dots once everything else is dry.

If the neck still looks stiff, soften the curve with a slightly thicker middle and a narrower tip.

Palette: Golden Choux, Vanilla Cream, Powdered Sugar White, Soft Brown

A cupcake stand at a birthday party brings people-free celebration into the frame through color and decoration alone. Paint the tiered stand first as two or three simple rounded platforms stacked on a central pole, then fill each tier with cupcakes in a mix of pastel wrapper colors.

Vary the frosting swirls across the cupcakes, some tall and peaked, some flatter with a single berry or sprinkle on top, so the stand feels festive rather than repetitive. A few paper streamers or a small banner in the background hints at the party without needing any figures at all.

If this is your first time with a tiered stand, lightly pencil the three platform ovals first and check they sit centered on the pole before adding any cupcakes, since an off-center stand is hard to fix once it’s full of color.

Keep the top tier’s cupcakes a touch smaller than the bottom tier’s for correct perspective.

Palette: Pastel Pink Wrapper, Pastel Mint Wrapper, Vanilla Frosting, Soft Gold Stand

A box of chocolates with a satin bow is a quiet, elegant subject after the busier party stand, built from one box shape and a grid of small shapes inside. Paint the box open, lid tilted back slightly, lined with a soft paper-brown interior, then fill it with rows of chocolates in varied shapes: round, square, a drizzle pattern on top of a few.

The bow is the real centerpiece, so give it the most care: paint the ribbon loops as soft overlapping curves in a glossy satin pink or red, with one lighter highlight stroke down the center of each loop to suggest the sheen of satin.

If this is your first time with a bow shape, practice the two loops and center knot separately on scrap paper before painting them on the real piece, since a lopsided bow is the one thing that reads wrong immediately.

Keep the chocolates smaller and simpler than the bow so the ribbon stays the focal point.

Palette: Satin Pink Bow, Chocolate Brown, Box Interior Brown, Highlight White

A girl choosing pastries at a counter brings a figure into the scene for the first time on this list, so keep her simple: a soft silhouette or a loosely painted figure from the side or back, one hand pointing toward the display case. Paint the counter and glass case first, filled with a small row of pastries in varied shapes and colors, then add the figure afterward so she sits naturally in front of it.

Keep her clothing in one or two flat colors with no fine detail, since the pastries should stay the visual star of the piece. A simple hairstyle and a plain coat shape is all she needs.

Comparing her height to the counter height keeps the scene believable: the counter should sit roughly at her hip or waist, not her shoulder, or the whole scene feels off.

If the figure feels stiff, loosen her pose with a slight forward lean toward the glass.

Palette: Soft Coat Color, Pastry Case Brown, Pale Counter, Glass Blue Grey

A waiter pushing a dessert trolley is a lively next step after a single figure, since now you’re balancing a person and a full spread of tiny desserts together. Paint the trolley first as a simple two or three tier cart on small wheels, topped with a handful of miniature desserts from earlier in this list: a tiny cake, a few petit fours, a small tart.

Add the waiter behind it in a simple dark uniform shape, one arm extended to the trolley handle, keeping his pose loose and mid-step rather than stiffly posed.

If this is your first time balancing a figure and an object together, paint the trolley and its desserts completely first, then add the waiter last so you can judge exactly how much space he needs without crowding the desserts.

Keep his face very simple or even turned slightly away, since too much facial detail pulls focus from the sweets.

Palette: Trolley Gold, Waiter Uniform Dark, Assorted Pastel Desserts, Pale Background

A cat stealing whipped cream is one of the most playful subjects on this list, pairing a dessert with a little mischief. Paint the dessert first, a simple bowl or slice topped generously with whipped cream, then add the cat beside or on top of it, one paw reaching in or its face buried just at the edge of the cream.

Keep the cat’s body in simple rounded shapes with minimal detail, just enough to suggest ears, a tail and a guilty expression, since a loose cartoon-like cat suits the sweet, playful tone of this whole series better than a realistic one.

If you have time for the forty minute version, add a dusting of cream on the cat’s nose or whiskers to really sell the theft; the ten minute version works fine with just the paw mid-reach.

A soft pencil sketch of the cat’s pose first, before any paint, keeps the action readable.

Palette: Cream White, Soft Cat Grey, Dessert Pink, Pale Plate

A picnic of mini tarts spreads several small desserts across a soft blanket, making this a nice exercise in a loose, relaxed arrangement rather than a tidy grid. Paint the blanket first as a simple patterned rectangle, gingham or striped, then scatter four or five mini tarts across it in slightly varied positions, some closer together, some apart.

Vary the tart toppings across the group, a berry one, a lemon one, a chocolate one, so the picnic feels gathered rather than mass produced. A small jug or a single flower tucked beside the tarts adds a finishing touch without much extra effort.

If this is your first time arranging a loose group like this, place the tarts with an odd number and uneven spacing, since even, symmetrical groupings tend to look stiffer than a natural scatter.

Keep the blanket pattern simple and let the tarts carry the color.

Palette: Gingham Red, Berry Tart, Lemon Tart, Chocolate Tart

Macarons in a striped box is a cheerful, color-forward piece to paint near the end of this list, since by now the small repeated-shape skills from the petit fours and donut wall should feel familiar. Paint the open box first with simple painted stripes on the lid, then fill the inside with rows of macarons in varied pastel shells: pink, lilac, mint, and butter yellow.

Keep each macaron’s shell slightly domed with a thin ruffled edge where the two halves meet, and a small line of filling peeking out around that edge in a slightly darker or contrasting tone.

If the macarons look too uniform, vary the exact shade of each pastel color slightly across the box, since real macarons never come out two identical shades of the same color.

Swap gouache for colored pencil over a light wash if you want crisper stripe edges on the box lid.

Palette: Pink Macaron, Lilac Macaron, Mint Macaron, Butter Macaron

Pear tarte tatin in a pan closes this list with a warm, rustic subject that pulls together caramel and fruit skills from earlier ideas. Paint the pan first as a wide, shallow circle in a dark cast-iron grey, then fill it with a deep caramel base layer.

Arrange pear halves in a spiral or fan pattern across the caramel, each one a soft rounded wedge shape with a thin darker line marking the core. Let the caramel show through slightly at the edges of each pear for that glossy, just-turned-out look.

Eye level is worth considering here: a top-down view shows off the pear arrangement best, while a slight angle lets you include the pan’s rim and handle for more context. Either works, so pick whichever feels more natural in your sketchbook.

If the caramel looks too even, deepen a few spots near the pan’s edge for a more cooked, uneven color.

Palette: Dark Caramel, Pear Gold, Cast Iron Grey, Soft Cream

What to Do Next

Pick one dessert that’s calling to you most, whether that’s a quiet slice of tart or the full patisserie window, and start with a light pencil sketch on a small sheet of watercolor paper. Keep your gouache mixes creamy and simple, block in the big shapes first, and let the sweet little details come last.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for dessert painting?

Gouache works best for dessert painting because its flat, opaque color sits in clean creamy shapes, matching the smooth icing and glaze look these subjects need. Watercolor or acrylic can substitute if that’s what you already own.

How do you make a dessert painting look glossy?

Leave small, bright gaps of untouched paper or add tiny pure white dots once the base color is fully dry. Painting the highlight last, on a dry surface, is what reads as shine rather than a flat patch of color.

What size paper suits these dessert scenes?

A small to medium sketchbook page, roughly five by seven inches or similar, suits most single desserts and keeps the subject large on the page. Busier scenes like a patisserie window or a cupcake stand benefit from a slightly bigger sheet.

How do I keep layered desserts like trifle or tiramisu from turning muddy?

Let each layer dry completely before painting the next one on top. Working wet layers against each other is the main reason stacked desserts blend into a grey or brown mess instead of staying distinct.

Can beginners paint these dessert scenes in one sitting?

Yes, every idea here is built from simple shapes that can be blocked in and finished within about ten to forty minutes. Starting with the simpler plated desserts before moving to busier scenes like a shop window makes the whole list easier to work through.
