36 Colorful Sketchbook Ideas From the Circus, the Carousel and the Night Fair

These colorful sketchbook ideas each tell a small story from an old-fashioned circus or fair, a kind of page that rewards bright gouache and a loose hand. Every scene below fills the whole page, with one character doing one thing in one place, so you never end up staring at empty white paper wondering what goes where.

Pick whichever scene catches your eye first and treat it as a one-sitting project. The list moves from the simplest setups near the top to the busier, more layered scenes further down, so a first-timer and a returning painter both find a good starting point.

Candy Floss Stand Under Strings Of Lights

Start with the biggest shape first: the striped awning of the stand, painted as one flat red and yellow block before anything else touches the page. Add the vendor’s rounded shoulders next, then the pink cloud of candy floss on its stick, and save the string of bulb lights for last so they sit on top of the dry paint.

Mixing a true saturated teal for the night sky behind the stand makes the warm stripes pop harder than any amount of detail would. Dot the lights in with the brush handle tip dipped in white gouache for neat round bulbs.

Ten minutes gets you the stand and the vendor; give it forty and add a small queue of two or three fairgoers waiting at the counter.

Girl Riding A Painted Carousel Horse

Measure before you paint: the horse’s body should run about three head-lengths from nose to tail, with the girl’s seated figure taking up roughly one head-length of that span at the saddle. Getting this ratio right first stops the horse from reading as too stubby or too long once the brass pole and platform go in underneath.

Keep the horse’s mane flying to one side to suggest motion even though it never actually moves. The girl’s braid can flick the same direction for a matched sense of spin.

Paint the horse first in creamy white and gold, then the girl in a bright red coat, and the brass pole last in a thin gold line straight down through both.

Clown Feeding A Pony Backstage

The usual mistake with a backstage scene is cramming in too much clutter behind the figures until the eye has nowhere to land. Paint the clown and pony first, large and close together, then add only two or three backstage props such as a trunk and a hanging costume, leaving everything else as flat teal shadow.

Give the clown’s oversized shoes and red nose just a touch more saturation than the rest of the outfit so the eye goes there first.

Finish the pony’s coat with a dry brush dragged lightly over the gouache once it is nearly dry, for a soft broken texture instead of one flat block of brown.

Acrobat Practicing On A Rope Between Caravans

Place the eye level low, right around the acrobat’s waist, so both caravans lean slightly upward toward their rooftops on either side. This single choice makes the rope between them read as properly high off the ground without any extra perspective lines.

Paint the two striped caravan roofs first as flat triangles of red and yellow, then the rope as one thin confident line stretched taut between them, and the acrobat’s balanced silhouette last, arms out wide.

A small shadow painted directly under the rope line anchors the whole scene and keeps the acrobat from floating in empty space.

Fortune Teller’s Striped Tent At Dusk

Reach for a flat wide brush for this one rather than a round, since the whole scene is built from broad striped bands rather than fine lines. Lay the tent’s red and gold stripes in with single confident strokes, letting the brush width set the stripe width for you.

Leave a glowing gap at the tent entrance where a lantern sits just inside, and keep everything else around it in flatter, darker teal.

Working this loose and graphic, the whole tent takes under ten minutes; add forty and paint a small round table and crystal ball glowing faintly through the open flap.

Strongman Lifting A Striped Barbell

Figure proportion matters most here: keep the strongman roughly four and a half heads tall rather than the usual adult seven or eight, since a slightly squashed, broad-chested figure reads as comically strong in a fairground setting. Widen the shoulders to about two head-widths across.

Paint the striped red and yellow barbell ends as perfect circles first, the connecting bar as one straight line, then build the figure around that fixed shape so the proportions of strongman to weight never drift.

Finish with a small curled mustache and a single bold eyebrow line for personality in two brushstrokes.

Ticket Booth With A Queue Of Fairgoers

Build this scene back to front: paint the striped ticket booth first as a tall flat rectangle, then the small queue of three or four simplified figures in front of it, then finally the ground shadows that tie everyone to the same patch of grass. Working in that order keeps the booth from looking pasted on afterward.

Vary the figures by hat and coat color alone rather than by pose, which reads as a real queue without demanding any tricky anatomy.

A single string of triangle flags along the booth roof adds festivity for almost no extra time.

Trapeze Pair Mid Swing Under The Big Top

Light source decides everything in a big top scene: set it as a single warm spotlight from below, which throws the trapeze pair’s shadows up and across the striped canvas ceiling rather than straight down. That one choice makes the whole tent interior feel theatrical instead of flat.

Paint the striped tent ceiling first as a wide fan of red and cream triangles meeting at a central point, then the two trapeze figures swinging past each other near that point.

Keep both figures as simple silhouettes with just a flash of costume color, since detail gets lost at this distance anyway.

Pony Pulling A Painted Wagon Through The Fairgrounds

Keep the wagon wheels as true circles from the start, drawn lightly before any paint, since an oval wheel is the fastest way to make a wagon look broken rather than parked. Measure the wheel diameter against the pony’s leg height to keep the scale believable.

Paint the wagon’s side panel first in one flat teal with a gold scroll pattern, then the pony’s harness lines connecting it to the wagon, then the pony itself last so the harness sits correctly under its coat rather than floating on top.

A little dry-brushed dust behind the wheels suggests motion without adding any real detail.

Juggler Tossing Striped Balls By The Entrance Gate

The usual mistake with juggling is painting every ball the same size, which flattens the sense of motion completely. Paint the ball nearest the viewer slightly larger and the two higher ones smaller, following basic perspective, so the arc feels like it is actually moving through space.

Build the juggler’s pose around a simple curved spine line first, arms following that curve outward, before any costume color goes on.

Finish with the striped entrance gate behind in flat red and yellow, kept simpler than the juggler so the figure stays the clear focus.

Fire Eater Practicing Behind The Tents

Reach for a small round brush for the flame itself, since fire needs soft tapering edges that a flat brush cannot give. Load the brush with yellow at the tip and red near the base, then pull one upward stroke so the two colors blend mid-stroke into a natural gradient.

Paint the fire eater’s silhouette first in dark teal against the lighter sky, then the single flame last so it reads as the brightest point on the whole page.

Keep the background tents loose and shadowed, since this scene lives or dies on that one glowing flame.

Ringmaster Announcing From A Striped Podium

Ten minutes gets a flat, graphic version: the ringmaster’s red coat and tall hat painted as simple blocky shapes atop a striped podium, arms raised, no background at all beyond a wash of teal. That alone makes a satisfying quick page.

Give it forty minutes and add a half-circle of spectator silhouettes in the lower third of the page, looking up toward the podium, which turns a single figure into a full scene with an audience.

Keep the ringmaster’s coat the most saturated red on the page so he stays the clear center of attention even with the crowd added.

Child Choosing A Prize At The Ring Toss Stall

Start this scene with the row of prizes, since getting their silly, varied shapes right first makes everything else easier to place around them. Paint three or four simple stuffed toys and trinkets lined up on a striped shelf, each a different bold color.

Add the child next, reaching up toward one prize, kept small and simply shaped so the prizes stay the visual star of the page.

Finish with a scatter of rings on the counter in front, painted as thin ovals rather than full circles to suggest they are lying flat.

Elephant Walking In A Painted Parade Procession

Proportion check: an elephant’s shoulder height should sit roughly level with a standing adult’s head, and the body length runs close to two shoulder-heights nose to tail. Sketch these two measurements lightly before committing to paint so the elephant reads as genuinely large next to the parade figures beside it.

Paint a draped, patterned blanket over its back in bold teal and gold before the legs, since the blanket’s pattern is easier to keep even on a flat shape than on a fully formed body.

A small handler walking alongside gives scale instantly without needing any extra figures.

Fortune Fish Pond Game At The Edge Of The Fair

Edges make this scene work: lift a little color out of the water’s surface with a damp clean brush right after painting the teal pond, which leaves soft pale streaks that read as reflected light. Do this while the paint is still wet, not after it dries.

Paint the striped wooden rim of the pond first, then the water, lifting highlights immediately, then the small painted fish shapes last so they sit believably under that shimmer.

A child leaning over the rim with a little net completes the story in one more shape.

Snake Charmer’s Basket By The Fortune Tent

Vary this one next time by swapping the basket’s pattern from woven stripes to a solid color with a painted sun motif, which changes the whole mood from rustic to theatrical without touching the rest of the composition.

Paint the striped basket first, then the curved rising shape of the snake in one smooth upward stroke, then the charmer’s cross-legged seated figure last, built from simple rounded shapes.

Keep the snake in a single saturated teal so it reads clearly against the warmer reds and yellows of the tent behind.

Stilt Walker Towering Over The Crowd

Keep the eye level low and near the ground, at about the height of the crowd’s shoulders, which forces the stilt walker’s long striped legs to stretch dramatically up the page. This single perspective choice does most of the work for you.

Paint the stilt walker’s tall silhouette first, reaching almost the full height of the page, then the small crowd of onlookers at the bottom edge, kept noticeably smaller to sell the height difference.

A string of flags clutched in one raised hand adds color right at the top of the composition where it would otherwise feel empty.

Caravan Window Glowing With Lantern Light

Light decides the whole mood here: keep every surface outside the caravan in flat, cool teal shadow, and let only the one window glow warm yellow and orange from an unseen lantern inside. The contrast between those two temperatures carries the entire scene.

Paint the caravan’s curved wooden roof and striped side first in shadow teal, then cut in the glowing window last as the single warm note on the page.

A tiny silhouette of a cat on the window ledge adds a story without adding any real painting time.

Puppet Show Booth With A Small Audience

Build the striped puppet booth as one flat rectangle with a dark rectangular stage opening cut into it, painted first before any puppets go in. That dark opening becomes the natural home for whatever small figures come next.

Paint two simple puppet shapes inside the opening, arms raised as if mid-scene, then the small seated audience of children in front, each a different flat color.

Keep the puppets slightly more saturated than the booth itself so they stay the clear focal point of the stage.

Painted Horses Resting Beside The Carousel At Night

The usual mistake with a resting carousel at night is painting it fully lit like daytime, which kills the quiet mood entirely. Keep the horses in soft teal moonlight with only the carousel’s own string lights giving any warm color, dimmed down from their daytime brightness.

Paint the circular platform and central pole first, then three or four painted horses frozen mid-gallop around it, then the string lights last as small warm dots against the cool scene.

Leaving the background fairground completely dark and empty around the carousel makes it feel like the only thing still awake.

Bareback Rider Standing On A Galloping Horse

Measure the horse’s stride before painting the rider: the front and back legs should stretch to roughly one and a half body-lengths apart at full gallop, which is easy to underestimate and paint too cautiously. A too-short stride is the fastest way to make a galloping horse look like it is standing still.

Paint the horse’s stretched body and legs first, then the rider balanced standing on its back, knees slightly bent for believable balance, then flying ribbons from the rider’s costume last to reinforce the motion.

A single streak of dust behind the back hooves finishes the sense of speed.

Peanut Vendor’s Cart By The Big Top Entrance

Reach for the side of a short flat brush rather than the tip when painting the striped awning over this cart, dragging it sideways to lay down even, slightly textured stripes in one pass each. This gives a hand-painted canvas look that a careful outlined stripe never quite achieves.

Paint the cart and awning first, then the small pile of bagged peanuts on the counter, then the vendor leaning on the cart last, kept simple and half in shadow.

A single striped flag on top of the cart adds height and color exactly where the composition needs it.

Dog Act Jumping Through A Painted Hoop

Keep the dog’s body in a tight curved arc rather than straight, since a curved spine mid-jump is what sells the pose as airborne rather than simply posed in front of the hoop. Sketch that curve first before adding legs or head.

Paint the striped hoop as a flat ring shape first, held by a trainer’s extended arm, then the leaping dog passing through it, then the trainer’s full figure last.

A small spotlight circle painted faintly on the ground beneath ties the whole act together.

Night Fair Ferris Wheel Lit Against The Dark Sky

Build this scene from the outside in: paint the dark teal night sky first as a full flat wash covering the whole page, letting it dry completely before anything else touches it. Painting the sky last around a finished wheel always looks patchy by comparison.

Paint the ferris wheel’s structure next as a simple circle with spoke lines, then dot warm yellow and red lights along every spoke and the outer rim last, once everything else is dry.

Keep the gondola seats as small flat rectangles rather than detailed shapes, since at this distance detail only clutters the glow.

Knife Thrower’s Target Board Backstage

Proportion check for the painted target: keep the outer ring roughly the height of the assistant figure standing beside it, which makes the stakes of the act read clearly even with no knives actually shown mid-throw. A target drawn too small loses all its drama.

Paint the striped concentric rings of the target board first, then the assistant standing beside it in a confident pose, arms slightly out, then two or three small knives already stuck in the outer rings last.

Keep the knives few and widely spaced rather than clustered, which reads as a skilled near-miss rather than clutter.

Lion Tamer’s Cage Set Up For The Evening Show

Light source again decides the shapes here: set a single spotlight above the cage, which throws hard vertical shadows from the bars down across the sawdust floor. Paint those shadow stripes in the same pass as the bars themselves so they line up exactly.

Paint the cage bars as a grid of thin dark lines over a warm lit interior, then the lion sitting calmly on a striped pedestal inside, then the tamer’s small silhouette just outside the bars last.

Keep the lion’s mane loose and dry-brushed rather than outlined for a softer, warmer texture against the hard cage lines.

Contortionist Folded Inside A Small Striped Box

The usual mistake here is painting the contortionist’s limbs as straight lines crammed into the box, which reads as broken rather than impressively flexible. Curve every limb along a soft arc, and let at least one knee or elbow point outward past the box edge for a sense of real compression.

Paint the striped box first as an open container shape, then build the folded figure inside it limb by limb, checking each curve against the one before it.

A small striped curtain pulled half open beside the box adds context without extra figures.

Costume Trunk Spilling Sequins And Ribbon Backstage

Mixing a genuinely saturated teal, red and gold together in one open trunk is the whole point of this page, so load the brush heavily and let colors touch and blend wet into wet rather than keeping every ribbon a separate clean stroke. The slight bleeding reads as glittering fabric.

Paint the trunk itself first as a solid striped box, lid open, then spill the ribbons and fabric pieces out over its edge and onto the floor in loose overlapping strokes.

Finish with a few dots of white gouache flicked on for sequin sparkle, added only once everything else is fully dry.

Two Clowns Sharing A Meal On An Upturned Crate

Keep both clowns roughly the same height and build, varying only their costume colors and hat shapes, which makes the pair read as a comic duo rather than two unrelated figures sharing a frame. Sketch them from the same simple body template.

Paint the upturned striped crate as their table first, then a small plate and mismatched cups on top, then both clowns seated on either side last, leaning toward each other slightly for warmth.

Give one clown a red nose and the other a painted teardrop for a quick visual contrast between the two.

Fairground Band Playing By The Carousel

Build this busier scene in careful layers: the striped bandstand and instruments first, then each musician’s simplified figure, then finally the carousel’s edge peeking in from one side of the frame to anchor the setting without repainting the whole ride. Trying to do all three at once tends to muddy the composition.

Keep every musician’s pose slightly different, some leaning back, some forward, so the small crowd reads as a lively band rather than a static row.

A thin ribbon of bunting strung above the bandstand ties the color palette together.

Sword Swallower Rehearsing In The Mirror Tent

Reach for a clean round brush and a little patience for the mirror itself, since a believable reflection needs the exact same figure painted twice, once solid and once slightly softened and reversed. Paint the real figure fully first and let it dry before attempting the reflected copy.

Paint the striped mirror tent frame first, then the sword swallower’s figure, then the softened mirrored reflection last, using a slightly cooler and paler version of the same colors.

Keeping the reflection just a shade duller than the real figure is what sells the illusion of glass.

Horse Groomed And Braided Before The Parade

Vary this one from the earlier parade elephant by focusing entirely on texture rather than story: dry brush the horse’s coat in long strokes following its muscle direction, then switch to a fine round brush for the braided mane, painting each small braid section as a short diagonal stroke.

Paint the groom’s hands and brush first, mid-stroke along the horse’s flank, then the horse’s full body around that gesture, then the finished braids last once the coat color is dry.

A striped ribbon woven through the mane adds the fairground color without competing with the texture work.

Shadow Puppet Scene Projected On A Striped Screen

This idea asks for the opposite of the saturated palette used everywhere else: paint the striped screen first in its full bright colors, then add the shadow puppet shapes on top as flat solid black silhouettes, letting the screen’s own stripes show faintly through the thinnest parts of the black paint.

Keep the puppet shapes simple, a dragon or a dancing figure cut from a few confident curves, since detail disappears in silhouette anyway.

A small gathered crowd watching from in front of the screen, painted as low dark shapes, completes the scene in one more layer.

Vintage Motorbike Globe Act Spinning Inside Its Cage

Perspective carries this whole scene: set the eye level at the exact middle height of the spherical cage, which lets you paint the near and far rails of the sphere as symmetrical curves meeting at the same two points left and right. Getting those meeting points level keeps the globe reading as round rather than lopsided.

Paint the striped sphere cage first as those curved rail lines, then the motorbike and rider tilted at an angle inside, then a soft blur of motion lines trailing behind the wheel last.

Keep the background completely dark so every line of the cage and bike stays crisp and readable.

Bearded Lady Reading Fortunes By Candlelight

Keep the candle as the single light source and commit to it fully: everything closer to the flame gets warmer and brighter, everything further gets cooler and darker, with no second light anywhere in the scene. This kind of commitment is what makes candlelit scenes feel convincing instead of evenly lit and flat.

Paint the flame and its immediate glow first as a small bright core, then the bearded lady’s face and hands catching that warm light, then her striped shawl and the darker tent fading out toward the edges last.

A single tarot card laid on the table in front of her adds story with almost no extra painting.

Miniature Pony Pulling A Child’s Painted Cart Ride

Keep the pony noticeably smaller than the full-grown pony from the earlier wagon idea, close to pony-sized rather than horse-sized, which is the detail that makes this specifically a child’s ride rather than a repeat of that scene. Measure its shoulder height against the seated child for proof of scale.

Paint the small painted cart first with its own striped pattern, different from the earlier wagon’s scroll design, then the pony in harness, then the delighted child seated inside last.

A looped track of painted fence posts behind suggests the ride circles rather than travels anywhere.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene from the top of the list for a first try, a striped awning or a single figure is enough to start. Open to a fresh page in a heavyweight sketchbook, lay in the biggest shape first, and let the story build from there one layer at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does gouache work well for bright, busy sketchbook scenes like these?

Yes, gouache is ideal here because it goes on flat and opaque straight from the tube, which suits bold striped tents and solid figure shapes far better than a transparent medium. It also rewets easily, so corrections and texture work stay forgiving even mid-scene.

What paper holds up to gouache without buckling?

Look for a sketchbook labeled for mixed media or watercolor, at least 300gsm, since lighter cartridge paper buckles and pills once gouache goes on wet. A slightly textured surface also helps dry brush effects like fur and dust catch nicely.

How do I keep these circus scenes from looking cluttered?

Paint the biggest shape first, whether that is a tent, a caravan or a figure, then add only two or three supporting details around it. Most of the ideas above work in three layers: main subject, one or two props, then a shadow or light to finish.

What is the fastest way to get saturated reds, yellows and teals?

Buy those three colors as close to full strength as the tube allows rather than mixing them from scratch each time, and keep white and black separate for lightening or shading. Premixing muddies gouache fast, so mix small amounts fresh for each session.

Can a beginner really finish one of these pages in one sitting?

Yes, most scenes here break into three or four painting stages that together take ten to forty minutes depending on how much detail gets added. Starting with the simpler early ideas on the list, like the candy floss stand, builds confidence before trying a busier scene.
