Table of Contents
A sewing themed junk journal gives every spool, thimble and pattern piece a home on paper instead of in a drawer. This kit holds 28 pages: 20 full scene pages of sewing rooms and tailor shops, 4 seamless background patterns for covers and pockets, and 4 lined writing pages bordered with notions, ready for lists and notes.
Print the set on medium weight matte paper, around 24 to 32 lb, so paint and ink stay crisp and pages do not curl. Set the printer to its best or highest quality photo setting, choose actual size so nothing shrinks to fit, then trim each sheet to the trim marks or straight to the edge of the paint before gluing it into a journal.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Sewing Room Scenes
A black and gold treadle machine sits under a lace curtained window, light falling across the needle plate and a half finished seam.
Pair this page with the ticking stripe background further on in the set: glue the basket scene onto the left sheet of a spread and let the stripes show on the right so the whole opening reads as one shelf of sewing supplies.
The basket itself holds spools in several colours, loose buttons, a stub of chalk and a folded tape measure, all painted against a plain tabletop.
A dress form draped in unfinished cloth stands in a corner of the shop, pins marking a hem and a yardstick leaning against its base, with shelves of folded fabric painted behind.
The usual mistake with a busy scene like this is gluing it flat against a facing page with nothing else, so it looks stranded. Add a single pressed fabric scrap or a swatch of ribbon beside it to anchor the page into the spread.
The frame holds a quilt mid stitch, needle still threaded, with a pincushion and spare thread resting on the wood beside it.
An open wicker sewing basket rests on a porch step, spilling ribbon, a folded apron and a pair of small scissors into the morning light.
Small Treasures And Notions
Write a short line about where each button came from, an old coat, a grandmother’s blouse, a shirt long since worn through, in the space just under this jar.
The jar sits crowded with mismatched buttons of bone, glass and brass, a few spilled loose beside it on the sill.
A pair of embroidery scissors, a worn silver thimble and a length of unspooled thread rest together on a folded piece of linen.
Try the five minute version of this page: skip the full background wash and simply paint the pincushion and a scatter of pins on cream paper, letting the paper itself stand in for the tabletop.
Pins of different lengths rest around a tomato shaped pincushion, a few tucked halfway into the velvet.
Who is this page for in a gift journal: the friend who sews every evening after work and keeps a drawer organised by colour, this row of spools will feel like her own shelf.
Spools stand lined up by shade from pale cream through rose to deep plum, a few loose threads trailing between them.
A cloth tape measure coils loosely on a folded quilt square, its numbers faded, beside a small pair of fabric shears.
Fold the torn edge of this page forward slightly before gluing it in, so the pattern paper looks like it is lifting off the sheet, then pin the corner down with a single dab of glue instead of flattening the whole page.
Tissue thin pattern pieces lie pinned to a length of cotton, a pencil and small scissors resting at the edge.
Hand Sewing Corner
A wooden embroidery hoop holds linen stitched halfway through a spray of flowers, needle resting in the unfinished petals and a small basket of floss beside it.
Add a question for the entry written beside this page: what is the oldest piece of clothing in the house still being mended rather than replaced.
A wooden darning egg sits tucked inside a wool sock mid repair, a needle threaded with grey wool left resting across the heel.
A handful of crochet hooks lean against a soft skein of yarn, a few rows of half finished stitching trailing from the needle tip.
Tea stain the edge of this page before gluing it in and the lace will look softer against the aged paper, closer to something pulled from an old trunk than something freshly printed.
A spool of delicate lace trim unwinds across a folded handkerchief, a few loose stitches of thread resting nearby.
Tailor Shop Scenes
Rolled bolts of fabric stand upright on a shop shelf, their printed edges catching the light, with a small ladder and a price tag basket painted below.
Glue a tiny scrap of real fabric beside this page if the journal allows loose additions, matching one of the muted tones already painted into the scene so the page and the scrap sit together rather than fighting.
Chalk, a seam gauge and a small ruler lie scattered across a cutting table marked with faint pattern lines.
A tall mirror reflects a half pinned hem, with a cushion of pins and a folded measuring tape resting on a stool nearby.
An open drawer beneath an old machine holds spare bobbins, a buttonhole foot and a small oil can, each nestled in worn felt.
A finished patchwork quilt lies folded over the back of a wooden chair, its stitches catching the light, a sprig of dried lavender tucked into one fold.
Background Papers
Buttons of every shape repeat edge to edge in this muted pattern, good as a cover sheet, a lining behind a photo of a finished project, or cut down for a smaller insert page.
Soft vertical stripes in muted tones repeat across the sheet, useful under a photo of a sewing table, as a pocket lining, or as a plain divider between busier scene pages.
Small thread spools in a handful of colours repeat in loose rows, fitting behind a photo, as a journal cover, or trimmed thin for a border strip along a busy spread.
A small sprigged floral in the style of old dress fabric repeats across the page, fitting a cover, a photo backing, or a soft lining behind a lace page.
Lined Writing Pages
Use the lines here for a running list of notions to buy, a short note about a finished hem, or a letter to next year about one project still unfinished.
Write a fabric shopping list, a short diary entry about a day spent sewing, or measurements for a pattern still being fitted, right across these open lines.
Good for a gift tag message copied out longer, a quilt block plan, or quiet notes about a pattern that needs adjusting before the next attempt.
Set down a mending list, a short thank you note for handmade gifts, or a record of which spools are running low before the next sewing trip.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, trim each sheet, and start gluing the scene pages in first, then slot a background or lined page in wherever the spread needs a quieter moment. Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for this sewing themed junk journal kit?
Matte cardstock between 24 and 32 lb holds the washes well without curling or feeling flimsy. Avoid glossy photo paper, it makes the painted textures look plasticky and the lined pages harder to write on. Plain copy paper works in a pinch but feels thin once several pages are glued together.
What printer settings give the best results?
Choose the highest quality or photo setting available and set the paper size to actual size or 100 percent, never fit to page, so none of the pages shrink and lose their edge to edge colour. If the printer offers a paper type menu, select matte or cardstock for the richest colour.
Do I need to trim the pages before using them?
Yes, trim each sheet to the edge of the painted area with small scissors or a paper trimmer so no white border shows once it is glued into the journal. A steady hand matters more than speed here, work slowly along each edge.
What should I use to color or add to these pages?
The pages print in full colour already, so no colouring is needed. Add fine tip pens for writing on the lined pages, and keep a glue stick on hand if any page needs reinforcing at the spine once it is in the journal.
Can these pages mix with other junk journal themes?
Yes, a sewing spread sits comfortably next to 32 Vintage Junk Journal Ideas With Old Letters and Faded Lace or beside a cookbook junk journal section if the journal covers a whole household rather than one craft alone.
