32 Charcoal Pencil Art Ideas of Stormy Seas, Ravens and Moody Portraits

8

Charcoal pencil art rewards the kind of drawing that other mediums do not: real black, real velvet darkness, and a light source you can push as hard as you want. There is no watered-down grey here, just the pencil, the smudge stick and your thumb fighting for control of the shadow.

Below are 32 subjects built for drama: moody faces half lost in shadow, storms rolling over empty fields, wild animals staring you down, old trees, quiet candlelit rooms. Pick whichever one is calling to you tonight and work through it start to finish, no lettering, no fuss, just dark against light.

Start a woman’s face with a light oval and a loose center line to place the features before any shadow touches the paper. Block the lit side first with a soft 2B charcoal pencil, keeping the cheekbone and brow almost bare paper, then push a much darker pencil into the half of the face that falls away, letting the shadow swallow the ear and jaw completely.

Blend with a stump working from dark into light so the transition stays soft rather than striped. The usual mistake is making the shadow side flat and lifeless: add a little reflected light along the jaw with a kneaded eraser pulled sideways, just a whisper, to keep that side feeling round and not like a cutout.

If you do not have a blending stump, a cotton bud or even a clean finger does the job on paper this size. Work the eyes last, since they carry the whole mood: one catchlight, left pure white, is often all the life the face needs.

Todays tip: draw the shadow shape first as a flat dark mass, then carve the features out of it with the eraser rather than drawing them in on top.

Place the cliff first as a dark jagged mass along one side of the page, leaving most of the paper for sky and sea. Charcoal pencil loves white spray against black rock, so keep the wave crest as bare paper and build every rock and cloud around it in increasingly dark layers.

Think about where the light sits before you commit to any dark: if it comes from behind the cliff, the rock face stays almost silhouette while the spray glows bright against it, and that contrast alone sells the whole drama. Work sky, then sea, then cliff last so the darkest darks land on top and read as solid stone.

The place this goes wrong is muddy spray that never reads as water: keep the white of the wave crest completely untouched by charcoal and only smudge the grey mist around its edges. A putty eraser dabbed and lifted makes quick foam if your pencil work gets too heavy.

Finish with a few scratched white lines through the dark water using the eraser edge for the last streaks of spray catching light.

You Will Need

• putty eraser

A wolf facing the viewer head on needs its eyes placed early and kept pale, since everything else in the drawing exists to make those eyes feel lit from within. Sketch the skull shape lightly, mark the eye sockets, then leave the iris area as bare paper or the faintest grey while you build the fur around it almost black.

Layer the fur in short directional strokes that follow the way it grows, lighter down the muzzle and darker around the ruff and ears, so the texture has movement rather than a flat grey fill. Measuring the distance between the eyes against the width of the muzzle keeps the face from drifting too narrow or too wide as you work outward from the center.

Muddy fur is the common failure here: keep your darkest charcoal for the deep ruff only, and lift highlights along individual whisker lines with a sharp eraser corner rather than drawing them in white. A white charcoal or white gel pen works as a stand in if your eraser will not lift clean enough lines.

Save the eyes for last, barely touched by pencil, so they glow against all that dark fur.

You Will Need

• white charcoal pencil or white gel pen

For a bolder result, push the background to solid black and let only the eyes and a rim of fur catch light, turning the whole drawing into a glowing mask in the dark.

An old oak earns its drama from the twist in the trunk, so rough that shape in with a few sweeping charcoal lines before adding a single branch. Keep the hill it stands on simple, a low curved horizon with the tree as the only tall shape against the sky.

Decide where the light comes from before shading the trunk: a low side light carves deep grooves into the bark and throws a long shadow across the hill, which does far more for the mood than careful detail on every branch. Work the trunk dark first, then pull a stump sideways across it to soften some edges while leaving others hard and cracked.

Bare branches against sky tend to go stiff and symmetrical: let a few cross each other and vary their thickness, thinner toward the tips, so the silhouette feels windblown rather than drawn with a ruler. A fine liner pen can finish the thinnest twig tips if your pencil point is too blunt.

Leave the sky as smudged grey rather than pure white, which makes the bare branches read as dark lace against it.

Palette: Bark Black,Hill Grey,Overcast Sky

Build the raven from a simple teardrop body before adding a single feather, since the overall silhouette against the sky matters more than any individual mark. Charcoal pencil excels at that solid black bird shape: layer dark strokes in the direction feathers grow, leaving a sliver of reflected light along the back where the sky catches the curve.

The fence post gives the whole piece its story, so make it genuinely broken, splintered at the top with one jagged edge rather than a neat rectangle. Shade the post mid grey so the raven reads as the darkest thing in the drawing, sitting just above it on the page.

Flat black birds with no form are the usual trap: push a slightly lighter grey into the chest and belly with a stump, then add the deepest black only along the back and wing edge. Lift one small highlight on the eye and beak with the eraser point so the bird does not read as a paper cutout.

Keep the background loose, a few horizontal smudges for a dull sky, so the raven stays the clear focus.

Palette: Raven Black,Weathered Wood,Overcast Grey

Place the lighthouse itself small and dark off to one side, since the beam is the real subject here and needs most of the page to travel across. Draw the lighthouse first as a simple dark tower, then lightly pencil in the triangle the beam will occupy before touching any charcoal around it.

Work the storm sky and sea first, layering charcoal heavily everywhere except that triangle, which you protect by keeping it bare paper or the lightest possible smudge. This order matters: it is far easier to shade dark around a saved light shape than to try lifting a clean beam out of charcoal already laid down.

If the beam edges come out soft and blurry when you wanted them crisp, lay a scrap of paper along the edge as a mask and work charcoal right up against it, then pull it away for a hard line. A ruler held at an angle does the same job if you have no spare paper.

Scatter a few lifted white dots with the eraser tip for rain caught in the beam, which sells the storm instantly.

You Will Need

• ruler or scrap paper for masking the beam edge

Palette: Storm Black,Beam White,Sea Grey

Map the face with light construction lines for the brow, nose and mouth before chasing a single wrinkle, since wrinkles only read correctly once they sit on a believable underlying structure. Shade the whole face first with a mid grey base, then carve the deepest lines with a sharper, darker pencil following the direction skin actually folds, mostly horizontal across the forehead and curving around the mouth.

Strong side light is what makes age read as character rather than mess: pick one side to catch the light fully, leave deep wrinkles there as dark slivers, and let the shadow side go almost entirely dark so only a few lines show at all. This also means you draw less, which is kinder to a first attempt at a face this detailed.

Too many even wrinkles flattens the whole face into a pattern: vary their depth, letting some fade to nearly nothing and only two or three go truly black, usually at the eye corners and around the mouth.

Finish with a kneaded eraser pulled along the cheekbone and brow ridge to pull back a highlight and give the skin some life against all that linework.

Palette: Skin Shadow,Deep Line Black,Highlight Cream

Rough the owl as a simple cross shape first, body in the center and wings spread wide, before any feather detail touches the page. Barn owls read instantly from their pale heart shaped face and underside against dark wings, so keep that face and chest almost untouched white while the wingtips and back go nearly black.

Build the black sky behind the owl heavily and early, pushing charcoal right up to the wing edges so the pale bird seems to glow out of real darkness rather than float on grey. A kneaded eraser shaped to a fine point lifts the thin flight feathers along the wing edge once the dark sky is in place.

Owls in flight often end up stiff and flat winged: angle the wings slightly differently from each other, one a touch higher, and curve the wingtip feathers rather than drawing them straight, which gives the whole bird a sense of motion.

For a softer feather texture try a soft pastel pencil blended over the charcoal on the underside, which adds a warm tone without losing the deep blacks elsewhere.

Palette: Night Black,Owl Cream,Wing Grey

Gesture the leap first with a single flowing line for the spine and legs before adding any shading, since a believable leap depends entirely on that initial line of action. Keep the figure proportion honest by checking the head height against the total body length roughly eight times, which stops the legs from stretching too long or the torso from shrinking under pressure to finish the pose.

The spotlight is what turns a figure study into drama: leave a soft circle of near bare paper around the dancer and push the background to deep black right at its edge, with the darkest shadow falling directly under the dancer’s lifted leg.

Costumes and skin in a spotlight tend to lose all their form if left too pale: add a light grey shadow along the underside of each limb even inside the lit area, just enough to keep the body reading as round rather than a flat white cutout.

Blend the tutu’s edges softly with a stump so it looks like fabric catching light rather than a hard shape.

Palette: Spotlight White,Stage Black,Skin Shadow Grey

Sketch the hull and masts as a simple silhouette first, since fog means detail disappears fast and the ship’s shape alone needs to carry the whole drawing. Lay the fog in before the ship with very light, wide horizontal smudges of charcoal across the whole page, then draw the ship on top, letting its lower hull fade into the lightest grey while the sails stay the darkest shape on the page.

Fog thins everything with distance, so the furthest sail or mast top can almost vanish into the grey while the nearest rigging stays crisp and dark, which does more to sell depth than any amount of detail. Blend the edges of the hull into the fog with a soft stump so there is no hard line where ship meets mist.

A common mistake is making fog look like flat grey fill rather than atmosphere: vary its density, a touch darker low over the water and lighter higher up, with a stump dragged horizontally rather than circular scribbling.

If your charcoal is fighting you on the softest fog, a dry makeup sponge blends an even softer haze than a paper stump.

You Will Need

• makeup sponge for blending (optional)

Palette: Sail Black,Fog Grey,Water Grey

Place the streetlamp first as a simple post and glowing globe, then work the figure standing just at the edge of its light rather than directly beneath it, which reads far more lonely than centered under the glow. Keep the figure a dark, mostly featureless silhouette: a coat, a hunched posture, maybe one hand in a pocket, is plenty of information at this scale.

Rain is a texture trick more than a drawing one: use a ruler to guide a series of fast, light diagonal pencil strokes across the whole scene after the lamp and figure are blocked in, all falling the same direction so the streaks feel like one storm rather than scattered scratches.

Puddled reflections under the lamp often get forgotten and the ground looks dry: smudge a vertical streak of the lamp’s light straight down into the pavement with a stump, breaking it slightly with a few lifted white rain lines.

If charcoal rain strokes look too heavy, switch to a white charcoal pencil for just the brightest streaks closest to the lamp.

You Will Need

• ruler for rain streaks
• white charcoal pencil

Palette: Night Black,Lamp Glow,Wet Pavement

Build the lion’s face from a simple central oval, placing the eyes, nose and mouth before a single strand of mane is drawn, since the mane only works once it has a solid face to frame. Shade the face itself in warm mid greys, keeping it noticeably lighter than the mane so the two read as separate textures rather than blending into one dark mass.

Layer the mane in long, loose strokes radiating outward from the face, darkest right at the edges of the page and gradually lighter where it meets the face, using a side light to decide which side of the mane catches the most texture and which falls into near solid shadow.

Overworked mane strokes that all look identical flatten the texture fast: vary stroke length and pressure, and let a stump soften the mane’s outer edges into the background so it does not look pasted on.

If your detail work is getting fiddly, switch to a willow charcoal stick for the broad mane strokes and save the sharpened pencil only for the eyes and nose.

You Will Need

• willow charcoal stick (optional)

Palette: Mane Black,Lion Gold Grey,Shadow Brown

Sketch the heron’s long S curved neck first, since that line sets the whole pose and is easy to fix early but painful to fix once feathers are shaded over it. Keep the body simple and smooth, mostly a soft grey with only a little darker shading along the back and wing, letting the long legs stay thin, dark lines against the paler water.

Eye level matters more here than with most birds: place the horizon low, near the heron’s legs, so the bird feels tall and the marsh mist stretches wide and flat behind it, which is the view that makes a heron look genuinely still and watchful.

Reeds and marsh grass can easily turn into a messy tangle: draw only a handful of tall thin shapes near the heron and let the rest dissolve into soft horizontal smudges of mist further back, keeping the detail where the eye should land.

A fine detail brush dipped in a little water smoothed over charcoal can soften the mist even further if a stump leaves it too textured.

Palette: Heron Grey,Marsh Mist,Dark Reed

Draw the hands before anything else, since their shape and placement decide the whole emotional read: fingers spread wide feel like shock, fingers together and curled feel like grief. Block the basic shapes of both hands and the hint of face beneath them lightly first, checking that the fingers are roughly the same length as the palm is wide before committing to any shading.

Light raking across the hands from one side carves the knuckles and creases far better than flat frontal light, so decide that direction early and keep every shadow, including the one the hands cast onto the face, consistent with it.

Hands are famously easy to get wrong in proportion: if fingers are giving you trouble, loosely trace around your own hand in that pose for the gesture, then refine it freehand rather than copying every line.

Leave slivers of the face visible between fingers, just an eye corner or part of the nose, which does more emotional work than showing the whole face would.

For more about how graphite, colored pencil and charcoal compare for a moody hands study like this, the breakdown in this pencil medium comparison is worth a look.

Layer the pine forest from back to front, lightest and vaguest trees first as soft grey triangles fading into fog, then progressively darker, sharper trees toward the front of the page. This order alone builds most of the depth before a single branch is drawn in detail.

Choose a low sun or moon glow behind the furthest trees and let it bleed a pale smudge into the fog there, which gives the whole dark forest one place for the eye to rest and makes the nearer black pine shapes feel even darker by contrast.

Overworking every tree the same size and spacing makes a forest look like wallpaper: vary the height and gap between trunks, and let two or three in front overlap slightly so the forest reads as a real depth of trees rather than a row.

If pine branches are tricky at this density, press the charcoal pencil at an angle and drag it downward in short strokes for a quick silhouette of needles rather than drawing individual branches.

Palette: Pine Black,Fog Grey,Dusk Glow

Draw the arch shape first with a simple curved line against a straight door, checking that the curve is a true half circle rather than a lopsided dome before adding stone detail around it. Stonework around an old arch rewards a little exaggeration: deepen the mortar lines between stones into real dark grooves rather than thin pencil marks, since that depth is what makes stone look old and weathered.

Decide where the light falls across the doorway and commit fully: a strong side light means one side of the arch stays pale stone while the other falls into near black shadow, and the door itself can sit almost entirely in that darkness, just a hint of grain visible.

Flat, evenly lit doorways lose all their mystery fast: push the deepest black into the gap under the arch where the door meets the frame, since that sliver of true dark does more to suggest an unknown space beyond than any amount of door detail.

A fine point eraser pulled along the stone edges lifts a believable worn highlight where centuries of hands and weather would have smoothed the surface.

Palette: Stone Grey,Deep Shadow Black,Weathered Highlight

Block the violin’s outline carefully first, since its curves are precise and any wobble in the waist of the body or the scroll at the neck reads immediately as wrong. Compare the width of the body to its length as you draw, roughly one third, to keep the proportions honest before adding a single shading pass.

Varnished wood needs a sharp highlight running along the curved edge where light catches it, so decide the light direction early and leave that curve as bare paper surrounded by increasingly dark wood tone, darkest right where the body curves away from the light.

Velvet underneath should look soft and swallow light rather than sit flat: lay it in with broad, heavy strokes blended thoroughly with a stump, then lift a few soft creases with a kneaded eraser where the fabric folds, keeping those edges fuzzy rather than crisp like the violin’s.

The strings are the easiest place to lose precision: draw them last with a sharp pencil point and a ruler for straightness, spaced slightly wider at the bridge than at the scroll.

You Will Need

• ruler for strings

Palette: Wood Brown Black,Velvet Black,Varnish Highlight

Sketch the hood’s shape before the face inside it, since the hood’s edge decides exactly how much of the face gets to catch light and how much disappears. A hood pulled forward throws a natural, convenient shadow across the upper face, so use that: keep the eyes mostly in darkness and let only the lower face, jaw and maybe one cheekbone, catch real light.

Build the coat fabric in broad, confident strokes with a soft charcoal stick rather than fussy pencil lines, since heavy fabric reads better from big value shapes than from texture. Keep folds simple, three or four major ones, each with a dark crease and a lighter edge catching light.

A hood drawn with no depth looks like a flat triangle on the head: add a soft curved shadow line inside the hood’s opening where it wraps around the face, blended with a stump, to give it real volume.

If the mood feels too gentle, darken the background to near black right behind the hood so the whole figure reads as a silhouette with just a glimpse of a lit jaw.

Palette: Coat Black,Shadowed Skin,Background Dark

Place the two eyes first, since they are the entire point of this drawing and everything else exists to support them. Keep them large, almond shaped, and nearly the only pale shapes on the page, with a thin dark pupil running vertically through each one, leaving one small catchlight dot of pure white paper in each.

Build the cat’s body as a near solid black shape melting into an even darker background, so the eyes seem to float with almost no visible outline around the head. Pushing the body and background to the same deep black, rather than giving the cat a lighter outline, is exactly what makes the eyes feel like they are glowing out of nothing.

It is tempting to add whisker detail and ear shading, but too much of it breaks the illusion: keep the rest of the cat loose and barely differentiated from the dark, with maybe one hint of an ear edge catching the faintest rim light.

A fine white gel pen is the easiest way to get that single sharp catchlight if your eraser corner is not giving a clean enough dot.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Void Black,Eye Green,Catchlight White

Give the sky most of the page here, with a single low horizon line near the bottom, since the drama is entirely in the clouds and the field only needs to ground them. Build cloud shapes in rounded, overlapping masses rather than wispy lines, layering a soft mid grey first and then pushing much darker charcoal into the underside of each cloud where it curls over on itself.

A low eye level looking slightly up into the sky makes the clouds loom rather than drift, so keep that horizon line low and let the biggest, darkest cloud mass dominate the upper part of the page directly above the field.

Clouds without a clear light source go muddy fast: choose one bright gap, even a small one, where paper stays nearly untouched, and build every other cloud’s darkness relative to that one bright spot.

For the softest cloud edges, try a soft pastel pencil blended lightly over the charcoal base, which rounds the forms without losing the deep shadow underneath.

Palette: Storm Grey,Cloud Black,Break of Light

Start the gorilla’s head as a large, heavy shape, wider at the brow and jaw than most animal faces you may have drawn before, and place the hand against the chin early since its position changes the whole gesture of the pose. Check the hand’s size against the head: a gorilla’s hand is large and should never look dainty or human scaled against that heavy face.

Shade the face in short, deliberate strokes that follow the direction of the brow ridge and jaw muscle, keeping the deepest black around the eyes and in the furrows of the brow, since that is where the thoughtful expression actually lives.

A flat, glossy looking gorilla face usually means the fur texture got skipped on the parts people think are bald, like around the nose and mouth: even that skin has soft texture, so use a light stippling touch there rather than one smooth dark fill.

Leave a single soft highlight along the top of the hand where it meets the chin, which anchors the whole gesture and keeps the hand from disappearing into the dark fur.

Palette: Fur Black,Skin Grey Brown,Highlight Tan

Block the house as simple geometric shapes first, roof, walls, windows, before any shutter detail, and keep the whole structure slightly off true: a wall that leans just a little or a roofline that sags sells abandonment better than perfect architecture ever could.

Choose one or two windows to break, shutters hanging at an angle with one slat missing, and leave those windows as the darkest, most unknowable holes in the whole drawing, almost solid black with maybe one faint suggestion of a shape inside.

Weathered wood siding needs vertical streaking rather than flat shading: drag the charcoal pencil downward in long uneven strokes, pressing harder in some streaks than others, to suggest years of rain running down old boards.

If the house reads as too neat even with broken shutters, add a few tufts of overgrown grass at the base with quick upward flicks of a sharp pencil point, which does a lot to suggest the place has been left alone a long time.

Palette: Weathered Wood,Window Black,Overgrown Grey Green

Place the candle and its flame first, small and precisely drawn, since every other value in the drawing gets measured against how bright that tiny flame is. Leave the flame itself nearly bare paper with only the faintest warm smudge at its base, and build the wax, holder and surrounding air progressively darker the further they sit from that light.

Candlelight falls off fast, so the glow should only properly light a small circle, maybe the holder and a sliver of table, before the rest of the room disappears into solid black. Resist the urge to light up the whole room evenly, since that single small bright zone surrounded by real darkness is the entire point of the drawing.

A glow that looks like a flat grey circle rather than light is the common failure: blend it with a very soft touch using a clean stump, working outward and getting lighter in pressure as you move away from the flame, so there is no hard edge to the glow at all.

For the most delicate flame highlight, a white charcoal pencil touched right at its tip adds a believable flicker of brightness.

You Will Need

• white charcoal pencil

Palette: Flame Gold,Room Black,Wax Cream

Draw the staircase in simple perspective first, steps receding either up or down the page, checking that each step’s width shrinks consistently the further it sits from the viewer rather than guessing at the angle freehand. A single vanishing point sketched lightly in pencil, even if you erase it later, keeps the whole staircase from warping as you add stone detail.

Break several step edges unevenly, some crumbled at the corner, one missing a chunk entirely, and let moss or shadow pool in the gaps, which does more to suggest ruin than any amount of careful stonework on the steps that remain intact.

Choose where light falls down the staircase and let it create a strong value gradient, bright at the top or bottom where it enters and progressively darker as the steps disappear into shadow, which also reinforces the sense of depth from the perspective work.

A toothbrush flicked lightly with dry charcoal dust adds a convincing scatter of rubble and texture across the broken steps if fine pencil work feels too slow.

You Will Need

• old toothbrush for texture flicking

Palette: Stone Grey,Deep Shadow,Moss Grey Green

Gesture the turn of the shoulders and neck first with one sweeping line, since a convincing over the shoulder look depends on that twist reading naturally before any hair or face detail arrives. Wet hair behaves differently from dry: block it as a few large, heavy clumped shapes rather than many individual strands, each clump darker at its core and catching a single streak of highlight where water pools and reflects light.

Choose a light source coming from the direction she is turning toward, which lets you light the side of the face and neck she is looking back from, throwing the rest of the hair and shoulder into deeper shadow for contrast.

Wet hair clumps drawn too uniformly look like plastic rather than hair: vary the width and direction of each clump, and let a few thin strands break loose from the main shapes, drawn last with a sharp pencil point.

If highlights in the hair are hard to lift cleanly, a damp cotton bud touched briefly to the charcoal lifts a soft wet looking streak better than a dry eraser.

You Will Need

• damp cotton bud

Palette: Wet Hair Black,Skin Mid Tone,Highlight Streak

Rough the bull’s head and shoulders low and forward first, since the whole sense of threat comes from that lowered, forward leaning posture rather than from the horns alone. Build the shoulders and neck muscle as large, heavy dark masses, keeping the head slightly lighter so it reads as the focal point against that bulk.

Horns need careful measuring to avoid looking stuck on: check their width against the width of the head at the widest point, and curve them with a confident single stroke rather than several shaky ones, sharpening to a point only at the very tip.

A bull drawn too still loses all its menace: angle the head slightly off center, with one eye more visible than the other and nostrils flared wide and dark, which suggests motion about to happen even in a completely static drawing.

Dust and ground debris kicked up around the front hooves, a few quick smudged strokes low on the page, adds energy without needing to draw the legs mid motion at all.

Palette: Hide Black Brown,Horn Grey,Dust Grey

Block the train’s front end large and close, since a sense of speed depends on the locomotive feeling like it fills the frame and is about to pass the viewer rather than sitting small in the distance. Keep the perspective simple: the front of the train is largest and sharpest, with the platform and station structure receding and softening quickly behind it.

Steam is the real charcoal showpiece here: lay the station interior in dark first, then lift large soft clouds of steam out of that darkness with a clean dry brush or a kneaded eraser shaped into a soft edge, letting the steam billow unevenly rather than in one neat cloud.

A train with crisp sharp edges everywhere looks frozen rather than rushing: blur the wheels and the lower edge of the train slightly with a stump dragged horizontally, while keeping the front light and the smokestack crisp, which tricks the eye into reading motion.

If your paper will not lift steam cleanly enough with an eraser, a little white charcoal worked gently over the dark area achieves the same soft cloud.

You Will Need

• dry brush or kneaded eraser for steam
• white charcoal (optional)

Palette: Station Black,Steam White Grey,Metal Dark

Zoom right into just the eye and the folded skin around it, since cropping this close is what turns a familiar animal into something genuinely striking rather than another full elephant portrait. Draw the eye itself first, small relative to the huge expanse of skin around it, with a tiny bright catchlight left as bare paper in the iris.

Elephant skin wrinkles in a very particular pattern, long curving folds radiating outward from the eye rather than random cracks, so follow that direction with every line you lay down, varying depth so some folds go almost black and others stay a soft mid grey.

Skin texture drawn as identical repeated marks reads as a pattern rather than real hide: vary the spacing and darkness of the folds, and leave small patches of smoother, lighter skin between the deepest wrinkles so the texture breathes.

A fine stipple with the pencil tip across the lighter skin areas adds the subtle roughness elephant hide has without resorting to heavy outlined cracks everywhere.

Palette: Hide Grey,Deep Fold Black,Eye Highlight

Block the knit cap first as a simple rounded shape pulled low on the forehead, since its edge decides how much forehead shadow falls onto the face below, much like the hood did earlier. Knit texture reads well as short, slightly uneven diagonal ribbing strokes across the cap rather than one flat grey mass, worked in a single consistent direction.

Weathered skin needs the same deep wrinkle approach used for the old man’s portrait earlier, but pushed further into roughness: add small nicks and uneven texture across the cheeks and nose, as though wind and salt air have genuinely roughened the surface over years at sea.

A beard or stubble drawn as one flat grey patch looks pasted on: stipple or flick short individual strokes with a sharp pencil point, denser along the jaw and thinner higher on the cheek, to suggest real growth.

Leave the eyes slightly squinted, with a dark fold beneath each one, which does as much to suggest years facing wind and sun as any wrinkle on the rest of the face.

Palette: Cap Grey,Weathered Skin,Deep Shadow

Pair this with the heavy mane technique from the lion idea above if you want to practice textured strokes twice in one sitting, once on fabric and once on fur.

Place the moon first, a clean circle left almost bare paper, positioned off center rather than dead middle, since that single decision shapes where every dark cloud and wave gets built around it. Work the heavy clouds next, dark and rolling, allowing them to partly cross in front of the moon’s edge so it peeks through rather than sitting in an empty clear patch of sky.

A moon with no reflected path on the water below feels disconnected from the sea: once the clouds are in, lay a vertical streak of lifted highlight down through the dark waves directly under the moon, broken and uneven rather than one clean line, using a kneaded eraser pulled downward in short strokes.

Waves at night can easily turn into a flat dark blanket: vary the wave shapes with a few sharper white crests nearer the viewer and increasingly soft, blended ones further into the distance, which keeps the water reading as moving rather than solid.

If the moonlight path needs more punch, a white charcoal pencil layered gently over the lifted highlight brightens it further without disturbing the dark water around it.

You Will Need

• white charcoal pencil

Palette: Night Sky Black,Moon White,Wave Grey

Draw the rose itself first, letting a few petals droop and curl at the edges rather than standing upright, since that drooping line is what reads as wilting before any shading begins. Build the petals from the center outward, keeping the deepest shadow tucked between overlapping petals and the lightest value on the outer curling edges where they catch what light there is.

Give the vase a single visible crack running from the rim downward, drawn with a confident broken line rather than a straight scratch, and shade around it slightly darker as though the glass catches light unevenly at that flaw.

A wilting flower drawn with crisp, fresh looking edges contradicts itself: soften petal tips and the stem’s curve with a light touch of the stump, and let one or two petals have already fallen loose near the base of the vase.

If the water level inside a glass vase is tricky to suggest, a faint horizontal smudge line with a slightly darker value below it is enough, no need to render glass transparency in full.

Palette: Petal Grey,Deep Petal Shadow,Vase Grey

Sketch the curtain’s main folds first as a few large sweeping shapes rather than many small wrinkles, deciding early how far it hangs open, since that gap is where every bit of light in the drawing will enter from. Shade the curtain itself heavy and dark, keeping its folds believable by making each one darkest in its deepest crease and lightest along the edge nearest the gap, where moonlight grazes it.

Through the gap, keep the balcony scene simple and pale by comparison, a railing, maybe a hint of distant rooftops, all in soft light grey, which lets the dark curtain dominate the foreground the way it would in a real room at night.

Fabric that looks stiff rather than heavy usually has folds that are too uniform: vary their width and let a couple of them twist slightly rather than hanging perfectly straight, and blend the deepest folds thoroughly with a stump so they melt into real shadow rather than staying linear.

A bit of moonlight spilling onto the floor just inside the gap, one soft diagonal smudge, ties the curtain and the balcony scene together as one lit space.

What to Do Next

Pick one subject that genuinely excites you, whether that is the wolf’s pale stare or the quiet candle in a dark room, and gather a soft and a hard charcoal pencil plus a sheet of textured paper before you start. Work dark to light in big shapes first, save the eraser highlights for last, and let the darks go as deep as the paper allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best charcoal pencil for beginners doing dramatic, dark work?

A soft 6B charcoal pencil builds the deepest blacks fastest, paired with a harder 2B for fine detail and a white charcoal pencil for highlights pulled straight out of the dark areas.

How do you get really deep, velvety blacks with charcoal pencil?

Layer several passes rather than pressing hard once, letting each layer dry into the paper tooth before adding more, then blend with a stump to pack the particles down into a solid dark.

How do you stop a charcoal drawing from smudging everywhere while you work?

Keep a clean sheet of paper under your drawing hand at all times and fix finished areas with a light spray of workable fixative before moving on to the next section.

Can you fix a mistake once dark charcoal is already on the paper?

Yes, a kneaded eraser lifts most charcoal back to near white if you dab rather than rub, and a harder plastic eraser clears the last trace before you redraw that area.

What paper works best for this kind of dramatic charcoal pencil art?

A textured charcoal or pastel paper with visible tooth grips the pencil far better than smooth drawing paper, letting you build darker darks and hold finer highlight detail.
