29 Card Ideas for Your Best Friend, From Video Calls to Long Distance Hugs

16

Card ideas for best friend pages are the ones worth keeping long after the birthday or the just-because note has gone in the post, because they hold a whole friendship in one small drawing. This list runs through the moments that make a friendship what it is: tea on a video call, a care package from far away, two feet dangling off a dock, a hug that stretches around the globe. Every one is built to sit on a card front with no lettering needed, so the picture does all the talking.

Below you will find 29 scenes, moving from the simplest two-figure sketch up to busier moments with more going on in the frame. Each comes with the order to draw it in, the part that usually trips people up, and one tip to carry into your own sketchbook. Grab a fineliner, your travel watercolors and a lilac marker, and pick whichever one already sounds like the two of you.

Start the whole list with something small and warm: two girls on a video call, each lifting a mug of tea toward the screen like a toast. Sketch two simple laptop or phone rectangles side by side in fineliner, then draw each face as a loose oval inside its frame, shoulders just visible at the bottom edge.

Keep both mugs the same size and held at roughly the same height so the toast reads clearly across the page; that matching is the one proportion trick that sells the whole idea. Draw the steam as two or three wavy lines above each mug before you add any color.

Wash the mugs in a warm color like dusty rose, leave the screens pale grey or cream, and let a little lilac marker sit along the frame edges. If straight laptop edges feel fiddly, trace them lightly with a ruler first and ink over it freehand.

Finish today by keeping both faces mid laugh rather than neutral, it warms up the whole page.

Palette: Dusty Rose,Payne’s Grey,Lilac,Cream

Follow the tea mugs with a bit of distance: a small parcel flying across a map, from one tiny house to another. Lightly pencil a simple continent shape or a winding coastline first, then ink two tiny houses on opposite sides before anything else.

Draw the parcel mid air between them, a small box with a bow, trailing a dotted line to show its path. Eye level stays high here, as if you are looking almost straight down at the map, which is what makes the houses read as far apart rather than side by side.

Wash the land in soft sage and the sea in pale blue, then let the parcel carry the brightest color on the page, a warm rust or coral, so the eye finds it first. If mapmaking feels daunting, a rough blob shape with a dotted coastline reads just as well as a real outline.

Keep the dotted flight line loose and hand drawn rather than ruler straight, it feels more like a journey that way.

Palette: Sage Green,Pale Blue,Rust,Cream

From the map, come back down to street level with two best friends squeezed under one yellow umbrella at a bus stop. Block in the umbrella first as a simple half circle with a curved handle, then tuck both heads and shoulders underneath it, overlapping slightly so they look genuinely squeezed in.

Light comes from behind in this one, a streetlamp or grey evening sky, so keep the umbrella itself the brightest shape on the page and everything around it muted. That single light choice is what gives the scene its cosy, late-afternoon feel.

Paint the umbrella in a clean golden yellow, the coats in soft grey and navy, and spatter a little blue-grey watercolor around the lower edge for rain. A damp cotton bud can lift a raindrop or two back to white if the spatter goes too heavy.

Try tilting the umbrella slightly to one side rather than drawing it perfectly centered, it makes the huddle feel more real.

You Will Need

• old toothbrush or stiff brush for rain spatter

Palette: Golden Yellow,Navy,Blue Grey,Cream

Flick the rain spatter from a distance with an old toothbrush loaded with blue-grey watercolor, testing on scrap paper first so it lands as fine dots, not blobs.

This is the card that says long distance better than almost any other: two girls with arms so long they hug all the way around the globe. Draw the globe first as a simple circle with a few loose continent shapes, centered on the page, then add the two figures standing on opposite sides of it.

The real trick is proportion: keep each girl’s body small compared to her arms, which should wrap a full half circle each around the globe and meet in a clasp on the far side. Sketch the arm curve lightly in pencil first before you commit to it in fineliner, so both sides match.

Wash the globe in soft green and blue, keep the figures in two different cheerful colors so you can tell them apart, and let the clasped hands sit right at the globe’s widest point. If the arm length looks odd, shrink the globe slightly rather than the arms, the hug is the point of the picture.

Add a few tiny stars or hearts floating near the clasp to finish it off today.

Palette: Sage Green,Soft Blue,Coral,Lilac

Move from the whole globe to one rooftop: best friends sharing a pair of earphones at sunset. Draw the two figures sitting close together first, knees up, shoulders touching, then add a single earphone cord running from a small phone between them up to each ear.

The light sits low and warm here, coming from one side of the horizon, so block in a simple sunset gradient behind them before you ink any detail; it sets the whole mood before the figures even go in. Keep the rooftop edge and any distant buildings as flat dark silhouettes against that glow.

Layer the sky in warm orange fading to soft pink and lilac, then paint the figures and rooftop as near-black silhouettes so they stand out clean against the color. If blending a smooth gradient feels tricky, drop clean bands of orange, pink and lilac wet on wet and let them bleed into each other on their own.

Keep the earphone cord as one unbroken ink line, it reads as connection even from a distance.

Palette: Warm Orange,Soft Pink,Lilac,Near Black

Bring the mood back up with something funnier: two friends trying on silly hats in a thrift shop mirror. Draw a simple mirror frame first, slightly off-center on the page, then sketch both figures standing in front of it so you see them twice, once directly and once in reflection.

Keep the reflected pair slightly smaller and flipped, never an exact copy, which is what makes a mirror read as a mirror rather than a second drawing of the same two people. Pile on the hats last: a floppy sunhat, a feathered number, anything that makes you both laugh.

Paint the hats in the boldest colors on the page, mustard, teal, a loud pink, while the mirror frame itself stays a quiet neutral like warm grey. A white gel pen can add a quick shine streak across the glass once the watercolor is dry.

If two full reflections feel like too much, crop the mirror so only their heads and hats show inside it.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for mirror shine

Palette: Mustard,Teal,Hot Pink,Warm Grey

After the laughter, slow things down with a quieter long distance moment: a girl opening a care package of snacks and socks sent from far away. Draw the open box first, flaps bent outward, then fill it with a loose pile of recognisable shapes, a chocolate bar, a rolled pair of socks, a small note card.

Give the girl a kneeling or crouched pose over the box rather than standing, it keeps the whole scene low and intimate on the page. One hand should already be lifting something out, mid-discovery rather than posed.

Wash the box in warm cardboard brown, let the socks carry a bright accent color like lilac or coral, and keep her outfit soft and plain so the gifts stand out. If drawing a believable box feels hard, a simple open cube shape with a few fold lines does the job.

Try this one next time with a different set of treats spilling out, it never looks the same twice.

Palette: Cardboard Brown,Lilac,Coral,Cream

Carry that quiet feeling into evening: two friends on a swing set at night, talking for hours. Block in two simple swing frames first, A-shaped posts and a straight top bar, then draw each figure seated, one leg tucked, chains sketched as thin double lines up to the bar.

Night scenes live or die on contrast, so paint the sky first in deep indigo before any other color goes down; everything else reads against that dark backdrop. A scatter of small white dots or a single pale moon finishes the sky once it is dry.

Keep the figures and swing frames as warm silhouette shapes, maybe catching a touch of streetlamp yellow on one shoulder. If indigo feels too heavy straight from the tube, build it slowly in two thin layers rather than one dark wash.

One concrete tip: leave a few tiny unpainted dots for stars before you wash the sky, masking fluid works too but a dry brush dab works in a pinch.

You Will Need

• masking fluid or white gel pen for stars (optional)

Palette: Indigo,Warm Yellow,Near Black,Soft White

Bring the scene indoors again: best friends painting each other’s nails on a bedroom floor. Draw both girls sitting cross-legged facing each other first, then add the small bottle of nail polish and one hand extended between them, fingers slightly spread.

This is a good one to practice the hands-on edge trick: once the watercolor on the polish bottle is dry, use a damp brush to lift a tiny highlight off its rounded side, which makes the glass look like it catches light. Keep the rest of the line work loose so the lifted highlight stands out.

Scatter a few extra polish bottles and a cushion or two around them in bright, varied colors, it fills the lower half of the page nicely. If lifting color feels risky, a single dot of white gel pen does the same job with no fuss.

Keep one bottle cap off and lying on its side, a tiny detail that makes the whole scene feel mid-moment.

You Will Need

• white gel pen (optional)

Palette: Coral,Lilac,Mint,Cream

Take the pair outside into a crowd: two friends sharing a bag of hot chestnuts at a street fair. Draw a simple paper cone or bag first, cradled between both sets of hands, then build each figure around it, bundled in scarves and coats.

Steam rising off the chestnuts is the detail that sells the cold, so draw it as two or three soft wavy lines straight up from the bag before adding any color; it should be the lightest, barest mark on the page. Keep faces rosy-cheeked with just a touch of pink.

Paint coats in warm plum and mustard, the chestnut bag in a plain kraft brown, and let a string of fair lights blur softly in the background with a wet lilac wash. If a street fair background feels like too much, drop it entirely and let the two figures and the bag fill the whole page.

Work the steam lines in last with a very dry brush, almost no water, so they stay delicate rather than heavy.

Palette: Plum,Mustard,Kraft Brown,Lilac

Jump back a little younger for this one: two girls doing a secret handshake in the school hallway. Start with the hands themselves, mid-sequence, maybe one palm slap and one fist bump captured at once, since the hands are the whole point of the drawing.

Measure the two figures against each other before you ink: same height, same rough proportions, standing in a loose mirror stance, which is what makes the handshake look practiced rather than accidental. Lockers or a hallway edge in the background can stay as a few simple straight lines.

Paint uniforms or casual clothes in contrasting colors so the two girls stay easy to tell apart even with similar poses. If drawing hands mid-motion feels tricky, a few short motion lines around the clasped hands does most of the work for you.

Keep backgrounds minimal here, a hallway reads instantly from just one locker shape and a strip of floor tile.

Palette: Teal,Mustard,Warm Grey,Cream

Slow the pace right down with two friends sitting on a dock, feet in the lake. Draw the dock as a simple horizontal plank shape first, running almost the full width of the page, then seat both figures on the edge with legs dangling down into the water line.

Eye level sits low and close to the water here, which is what makes the lake feel large and the dock feel like a small perch above it. Keep the horizon line high on the page so most of the space belongs to the water.

Wash the lake in layered blue-greens, letting the wet-on-wet edges blur softly where the color meets the dock’s reflection. If reflections feel fussy, a simple vertical smudge of the same colors under each leg reads as a reflection without any real drawing.

Finish today by leaving a thin unpainted line right at the waterline, it reads as a glint of light across the surface.

Palette: Lake Blue,Soft Green,Kraft Brown,Cream

Return to the long distance thread with one of the simplest ideas on this list: two friends looking at the same full moon from two different cities. Split the page into two halves, left and right, each with its own small skyline silhouette along the bottom edge.

Draw one large full moon at the top, shared between both halves, which is the whole point of the composition: same sky, different streets. Keep the two skylines different enough in shape, taller buildings on one side, smaller rooftops on the other, so it reads as two places rather than one mirrored.

Paint the sky in deep blue fading to soft lilac near the moon, then let the skylines sit as flat dark silhouettes against it. If a full moon circle looks uneven freehand, trace around a coin or a small lid before inking.

Try this one again later with a crescent moon instead, the same split-page trick works for any phase.

You Will Need

• coin or small lid to trace the moon

Palette: Deep Blue,Lilac,Soft Yellow,Near Black

Bring in some mess and comedy: two friends at a pottery class with clay on their faces. Draw a pottery wheel first, a simple round disc on a low stand, then seat one friend at it with hands cupped around a lump of clay while the other leans in close beside her.

The hands-on trick here is texture: once the clay shape is painted in a flat terracotta wash, flick a few darker brown speckles over both faces and hands using a stiff dry brush, which reads instantly as clay splatter. Keep it light, a little goes a long way.

Paint aprons in a muted color so the speckled terracotta stays the star of the page, and leave a small pot or bowl shape already taking form on the wheel. If a wheel feels too technical to draw, a plain lump of clay on a table works just as well.

Keep both faces smiling under the mess, it is the whole joke of the drawing.

You Will Need

• stiff dry brush for clay speckles

Palette: Terracotta,Umber,Muted Teal,Cream

Keep the comedy going with two friends laughing so hard they spill their coffee at a cafe table. Draw the small round cafe table first, two cups on it, one already tipped on its side with a puddle spreading out from it.

Exaggerate both figures’ poses for this one: heads tipped back, shoulders up near the ears, mouths wide open, since a quiet laugh will not read as clearly as a big one on a small card front. Keep the spilled puddle shape loose and irregular rather than a neat circle.

Wash the coffee itself in warm umber, the tabletop in pale cream so the spill shows up clearly against it, and the two figures in bright contrasting cardigans. If a convincing spill feels tricky, drop the puddle entirely and just tip the cup, the gesture alone tells the joke.

Try the quick version in ten minutes with just the cups and faces; the full forty-minute version adds a background window and a second table nearby.

Palette: Umber,Pale Cream,Coral,Teal

Shift to a quieter kindness: a girl walking her best friend’s dog while she is away. Draw the dog first, since its gait sets the whole energy of the scene, legs mid-stride and tail up, then add the girl holding a simple loop leash just behind it.

Keep the leash line loose rather than taut, a gentle curve rather than a straight line, which makes the walk look relaxed instead of like the dog is pulling. Give the dog a recognisable marking, one patch of color, so it reads as a specific, loved dog rather than a generic one.

Paint the dog in warm browns and cream, the girl’s coat in a cheerful solid color, and add one small tree or lamp post to anchor the scene without overloading the page. If dog anatomy feels hard, round off the body into two overlapping ovals, chest and hindquarters, before refining the outline.

Vary it next time with a different dog breed or a rainy walk with an umbrella.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Teal,Soft Green

If you enjoy drawing animals like this one, a look through cute panda drawing ideas is a good place to practice simple rounded animal shapes further.

Take the pair further afield: two friends hiking up to a waterfall with backpacks. Sketch the waterfall first as a simple vertical white gap between two rock shapes, since leaving that strip unpainted from the start is far easier than trying to lift color out later.

Place the two hiking figures small, lower in the frame, climbing a diagonal path toward the falls; that scale difference is what makes the waterfall feel tall and the hike feel like an achievement. Backpacks can be simple rounded rectangles strapped on with a couple of curved lines.

Paint the rocks in layered grey-greens, let the waterfall stay pure white paper with just a thin blue-grey shadow line down one edge, and keep the figures in bright, visible colors against all that green. If leaving a clean white gap feels risky, a thin strip of masking fluid down the center protects it while you paint freely around it.

Finish today by keeping the waterfall’s white strip the brightest, cleanest shape on the whole page.

You Will Need

• masking fluid for the waterfall (optional)

Palette: Forest Green,Grey Green,Coral,Blue Grey

Bring the scene back inside for something cosy: best friends in a blanket fort strung with fairy lights. Draw the fort structure first, a few draped blanket shapes over chair backs or a simple tent triangle, before adding the two figures tucked underneath.

Fairy lights are the texture trick here: once the blanket shapes are painted in soft solid colors, add a loose scalloped line across the top and dot small circles of warm yellow along it, leaving a tiny ring of unpainted paper around each dot so it glows. A kneaded eraser can lift back any dot that gets muddied by the blanket wash underneath.

Keep the overall light warm and low, since the fairy lights should read as the main light source in the scene. If a full draped fort feels like too much structure, a single blanket over two chairs reads just as cosy.

Try varying it next time with string lights shaped like stars instead of plain bulbs.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: Warm Yellow,Dusty Rose,Soft Navy,Cream

For more cosy indoor scenes like this, the string light pages in this glowing lights journal collection are worth a browse for extra ideas on drawing a warm glow.

Head outdoors again with two friends at a farmers market splitting a bag of peaches. Draw the paper bag first, held open between both sets of hands, then fill it with a loose cluster of round peach shapes, no two quite identical in size.

Give each peach a quick two-tone blend while the paint is still wet, warm yellow fading into a blush pink on one side, which is the fastest way to make a plain circle read as a ripe peach. Work all the peaches in one sitting while the paper stays damp so the blends stay soft.

Keep both figures’ outfits simple and sun-bright, and tuck a market stall awning or a crate of produce loosely in the background if there is room. If blending wet-on-wet feels nerve-wracking, drop a little pink into the yellow and let it spread on its own rather than brushing it in.

Finish today by adding one peach already bitten into, held up between them.

Palette: Peach Yellow,Blush Pink,Sun Gold,Soft Green

Bring the pair back to a familiar ritual: two friends taking a mirror selfie in matching cardigans. Draw the phone first, held up and slightly tilted in one figure’s hand, then build both bodies close together behind it, leaning in toward the glass.

Matching cardigans mean matching color exactly, down to the hex, which is the one proportion and consistency trick that makes this read as coordinated rather than coincidental. Keep both figures roughly the same height in the mirror reflection, adjusting only the hairstyle or pose to tell them apart.

Paint the cardigans in one shared soft color, add a plain mirror frame edge along one side of the page, and let the phone screen stay a pale rectangle with just a hint of the photo forming on it. If a phone screen feels fiddly at this scale, a plain pale oval held up reads as a phone just fine.

Vary it next time with matching scarves instead of cardigans, the same mirror setup works for either.

Palette: Dusty Rose,Warm Grey,Soft Gold,Cream

Return to the long distance thread with something graphic and simple: two paper planes meeting in the sky above two little towns. Fold reference in mind or not, draw each paper plane as a simple triangular shape with a few crease lines, angled toward each other at the center of the page.

Place the two towns small along the bottom edge, a cluster of little roofs on each side, which keeps the real focus up in the open sky where the planes cross paths. Leave a generous gap of plain sky between the towns and the planes so the eye travels upward naturally.

Wash the sky in a soft gradient, pale blue near the towns fading to warm cream higher up, and keep both planes a clean white with just fineliner creases so they stand out crisp against the color. If folding creases feel hard to fake, a few short diagonal lines across the triangle shape do the job.

Finish today by letting the two flight paths cross right where the planes nearly touch.

Palette: Pale Blue,Warm Cream,Terracotta,Soft Green

Slow everything down again with a girl hugging a pillow on a midnight phone call with her best friend. Draw the pillow first, a large soft rectangle hugged close to the chest, then build the figure curled sideways around it, one hand holding the phone to her ear.

Night light matters most here: a single lamp glow from one side of the frame should be the brightest, warmest shape on the page, with everything else sitting in deeper shadow tones around it. Keep her expression soft, eyes half closed, mid-conversation rather than posed.

Paint the pillow in a cheerful pattern or solid color, the surrounding room in deep muted blues and purples, and let the lamp glow bloom out in a soft yellow wash with no hard edge. If a glowing lamp effect feels tricky, drop clean water around a yellow dot before it dries and let the color feather out on its own.

Try this one again later from the other friend’s side of the same call, as a matching second card.

Palette: Deep Indigo,Warm Yellow,Soft Purple,Cream

Pick the energy back up with two friends cycling to the beach, towels rolled in their baskets. Draw both bicycles first as simple two-circle wheel shapes with a diamond frame between them, angled slightly so they read as moving rather than parked.

Roll each towel into a loose tube shape tucked into a front basket, letting one corner flop over the edge for movement. Keep both riders leaning slightly forward, which does more than anything else to make the scene feel like motion rather than a still pose.

Paint the towels in bright striped colors, the bikes in a plain neutral tone so the towels and the figures’ swimsuits carry the color interest, and sketch a thin strip of sea and sand along the bottom of the page. If wheels look lopsided, trace a small coin or bottle cap twice for a perfect matching pair.

Finish today by adding a few short motion lines trailing behind the back wheels.

You Will Need

• coin or bottle cap to trace wheels

Palette: Turquoise,Coral Stripe,Sand,Warm Grey

Keep the summer feeling going with two friends floating on pool rings in big sunglasses. Draw each pool ring first as a simple donut shape, overlapping slightly in the center of the page, then seat a figure loosely inside each one, arms draped over the sides.

Give both faces oversized round sunglasses, which instantly reads as relaxed and sunny even before any color goes down. Let the water fill most of the remaining page space in soft rippling bands rather than a flat wash.

Paint the rings in bright contrasting colors, the water in layered turquoise with a few lighter ripple lines left unpainted, and keep skin tones warm with a hint of sun color on the shoulders. If ripples feel hard to place, drop a few short curved pencil lines first as a guide before inking.

Vary it next time with pool rings shaped like fruit instead of plain circles.

Palette: Turquoise,Hot Pink,Sun Gold,Cream

Bring the pace right down again with two friends sharing a park bench and a bag of cherries. Draw the bench first as a simple horizontal slatted shape, then seat both figures close together on it, a small paper bag of cherries open between them.

Paint each cherry as two tiny overlapping circles in deep red with a thin green stem, repeated in a loose cluster rather than a neat row, which looks far more like a real handful. Keep the bag itself a plain kraft color so the cherries stay the brightest detail on the page.

Wash the park background in soft greens with a loose tree shape or two behind the bench, kept light so it never competes with the figures in front. If a believable bench feels tricky, three or four straight slats and two simple legs are all it needs.

Finish today by letting a couple of cherry stems dangle loose over the bag’s edge.

Palette: Deep Red,Leaf Green,Kraft Brown,Soft Green

Add some movement with two friends in a kayak splashing each other. Draw the kayak hull first as one long narrow boat shape, then seat both figures inside it facing forward, paddles raised mid-motion rather than resting flat.

Splashes are the texture detail that makes this scene work: once the water wash is dry, flick a few bright white gel pen droplets up from one paddle tip, and add a soft spray shape in pale blue-white right where the paddle meets the water. Keep the splash small and contained rather than covering the whole kayak.

Paint the kayak in a bold solid color, the water in layered blues with movement lines radiating slightly from the splash point, and keep both paddlers’ expressions bright and open-mouthed. If a gel pen is not on hand, a thin wash of pure white gouache does the same bright splash job.

Try this one again with the kayak tipped at a slight angle for even more energy.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or white gouache for splash highlights

Palette: Bold Orange,Turquoise,Deep Blue,Cream

Build toward the busier end of the list with a girl on her best friend’s shoulders at a summer concert. Draw the standing figure’s legs and torso first, wide stance for balance, then seat the second figure up on her shoulders, arms raised high in the air.

Keep the raised arms long and loose, fingers spread, since that gesture is what sells the whole energy of the scene from across a crowd. A simple stage light glow or a few small distant figures in the background suggest the crowd without needing to draw dozens of people.

Paint both figures in bright festival colors, let a warm stage glow wash bleed up from the bottom of the page, and keep distant crowd shapes as loose dark silhouettes with almost no detail. If balancing two stacked figures looks awkward, widen the base figure’s stance until the whole shape feels stable on the page.

Finish today with one hand on each of the top figure’s ankles, it locks the pose together visually.

Palette: Hot Pink,Stage Gold,Deep Purple,Near Black

Return once more to the long distance idea with two tiny people on opposite sides of a map holding the same red string. Draw a simple landmass or two separate coastlines first, then place one tiny figure on each side, a single unbroken red string running between their raised hands across the whole page.

Keep the string perfectly taut and straight, a ruled line inked freehand if you can manage it, since any wobble reads as slack rather than a deliberate connection. Everything else on the page, the land shapes, the tiny figures, should stay smaller and quieter than that one red line.

Wash the land in muted sage and sand tones, keep the string the single boldest red on the page, and leave the space around it mostly open and pale. If a straight hand-inked line feels risky, pencil it first with a ruler and go over it freehand once you trust the angle.

Vary it next time by looping the string gently instead of straight, for a softer feel.

Palette: Red,Sage Green,Sand,Cream

For more ideas on drawing two small figures connected across a page, the long distance pairs in this BFF drawing ideas roundup are worth a look alongside this one.

Close the whole set with two friends knitting matching scarves for each other on a sofa, a scene that folds the whole list’s warmth into one last page. Draw the sofa first as a simple soft rectangle with rolled arms, then seat both figures on it, each with a half-finished scarf and a pair of needles in hand.

Make the two scarves an obvious matching color so the gift-for-each-other idea reads instantly, even though each woman is knitting the one meant for the other. Let a loose tangle of yarn balls sit on the floor or between them for texture.

Paint the sofa in a cosy neutral, the scarves in one shared bright color, and keep the knitting needles as thin fineliner lines with no color at all so they stay crisp against the soft fabric washes. If knitting needles feel fiddly to draw, two simple straight lines crossing at an angle read perfectly well.

Finish this whole set today by adding one small mug of tea balanced on the sofa arm, a quiet echo of where the list began.

Palette: Dusty Rose,Warm Grey,Mustard,Cream

What to Do Next

Pick whichever moment already sounds like the two of you, sketch it lightly in pencil first, then go over it in fineliner before any color touches the page. Start on a small piece of cream watercolor paper cut to card size, keep the palette to three or four colors, and let today’s card be the first of several.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest card idea for a best friend to draw first?

The video call tea mugs idea is the simplest, since it only needs two faces, two mugs and two screen shapes. It builds confidence fast before you try busier scenes with full bodies and backgrounds.

Do I need watercolor paint for these card ideas for best friend pages?

Watercolor gives the warmest finish, but colored pencil or a few alcohol markers work just as well on the same fineliner sketches. Keep the palette small, three or four colors, so each card stays quick to finish.

How do I draw two friends without them looking identical?

Vary hair shape, outfit color or pose slightly between the two figures, even when their bodies are built from the same basic proportions. A different hand gesture or head tilt is often enough to tell them apart clearly.

What paper works best for a sketchbook style best friend card?

A cream or lightly toned watercolor paper around 140 pound weight holds both fineliner and light washes without buckling. Cut it to card size afterward, or draw straight into a small watercolor sketchbook and keep the whole page as the card front.

How do I show long distance friendship in a drawing without writing any words?

Use visual connectors: a map, a shared moon, a red string, or arms that stretch to meet. These let the picture carry the whole feeling of distance and closeness together with no lettering needed.
