Kitchen drawing gives you a whole winter’s worth of small, warm scenes without ever leaving the house: a pot on the stove, a dog by the door, flour on the counter. Every corner of a kitchen already has its own little story going on, and colored pencil is perfect for catching the steam, the wood grain and the soft light of a cold morning.
Below you will find 36 kitchen moments, ordered from quick and simple to a bit more involved, each one built around a person, a pet or a task so the page never feels empty. Pick whichever one matches the mood you are in today and you can have it finished before the kettle boils again.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest scene in the kitchen: a soup pot steaming on the stove with fogged windows behind it. Sketch the pot as a simple oval sitting on a rectangle stove top, then add the window shape behind, taller than it is wide, filled in with pale icy blue left mostly uncolored to read as fog.
Work the pot first in a warm grey with cherry red for any enamel trim, then lift tiny curls of steam by leaving thin unshaded lines rising off the lid rather than drawing them solid. Shade the stove darker underneath the pot so it looks like it is sitting there, not floating.
The steam is where most people overdo it: keep the curls thin, a few at most, and let the white paper do the work instead of heavy pencil marks. If you do not have a grey pencil, layer blue and brown lightly together for the same cool metal tone.
Try this today: draw the steam last, after everything else is shaded, so you can see exactly how much white paper you actually have left to work with.

A girl rolling pie dough on a floury kitchen island makes a lovely next step once you are comfortable with simple shapes. Block her in first as basic forms, rounded head, sloped shoulders leaning forward over the rolling pin, before adding any clothing or hair detail.
Draw the island surface as a flat cream rectangle and scatter flour across it with the side of a white pencil or a white gel pen, rather than trying to draw every speck by hand. Shade her sweater or apron in sage green with light hatching, keeping the strokes going the same direction on each section so the fabric looks consistent.
Proportion is the trick here: measure her head height against her torso with your pencil held at arm’s length before you commit to the lean, since a rolling pin scene goes wrong fast if the arms end up too short or too long for the body.
Keep the rolling pin itself pale and barely shaded so it does not compete with her hands for attention.
You Will Need

Move from people to objects with a pantry shelf of jam jars, flour tins and pickles lined up in a row. Draw the shelf as one long horizontal line first, then place each container as a simple cylinder or rectangle along it, varying the heights so the row has rhythm rather than looking like a fence.
Color the jam jars in cherry red showing through clear glass, left with a thin white highlight stripe down one side to suggest the glass catching light. Fill the flour tins in cream white with sage green lids, and leave the pickle jar mostly white with just faint green shapes suggested inside rather than drawn in full detail.
This is where beginners tend to shade every jar the same way: vary your pressure from jar to jar, pressing harder on the one in front and lighter on the ones further along, so the row reads as receding rather than flat.
If you are missing a true cherry red, mix a touch of orange under your red pencil for the same jammy warmth.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Cream White,Ochre
Glass highlights are easier with a white gel pen added after the pencil layers are down, rather than trying to leave perfectly clean white paper underneath.
Give the kitchen some company with a cat sitting on the counter watching snowfall through the window. Draw the cat first as an oval body with the tail curled around its paws, keeping the pose simple and still since a sitting cat is far easier to get right than one mid stride.
Build the window behind in pale icy blue with a scattering of small white dots left unshaded for falling snow, and keep the counter itself plain cream so the cat’s silhouette stands out clearly against it. Shade the cat’s fur with short light strokes following the direction it would actually grow, darker along the back and paler on the chest.
Eyes are the detail that can go wrong fastest on a cat: keep them large, round and a soft green or amber, and leave a tiny white dot of reflected light in each one so they do not look flat or glassy.
A ten minute version stops at the cat’s silhouette and a plain blue window; give it forty minutes and add whisker lines, snow dots and a soft shadow under the paws.
Palette: Charcoal Grey,Icy Blue,Cream White,Amber
Build a farmhouse sink under a window with a view of a snowy garden for a scene that leans more on setting than on any single character. Draw the window first since it anchors everything else, a simple rectangle divided by a thin cross bar, with the snowy garden sketched loosely behind it in pale blue and white.
Bring the sink forward as a deep rectangular basin in cream white, adding one or two dishes or a dish brush resting on its rim to give it some life. Keep the garden view soft and slightly blurred compared to the sharper lines of the sink, since the eye naturally reads a blurrier background as further away.
Light is the thing to decide before you shade anything: if the light comes from the window, the inside of the sink basin should be paler near the glass and darker toward the front edge, with the faucet casting a small shadow across the basin.
Try this today: shade the shadow under the faucet before anything else, it sets the light direction for the whole drawing.
Palette: Cream White,Icy Blue,Sage Green,Charcoal Grey
A kettle whistling on an old enamel stove is a satisfying subject because the shapes are so simple: a dome body, a curved spout, a tiny whistle cap on top. Draw the kettle first as two stacked ovals, then add the handle as a thin arched line rather than a thick shape, which keeps it looking light rather than clunky.
Shade the enamel body in cherry red or sage green with a confident highlight left bare down the curve, since enamel reflects light in one clean strip rather than a soft gradient. The stove beneath can stay mostly cream and grey, simple and flat so it does not pull focus from the kettle.
Steam from the whistle is the one hands on trick worth practicing here: draw it as a few short curved lines rising and fading, pressing lighter and lighter as the line goes up, or lift pencil marks gently with a kneaded eraser once laid down for a softer wisp.
No enamel red on hand works just as well in a soft orange or even a deep yellow kettle instead.
You Will Need

Bring some everyday clutter in with muddy snow boots by the kitchen back door and a dog waiting beside them. Draw the boots first as two simple leaning cylinders, one slightly tipped against the other, with a few short scribbled marks in brown for the dried mud along the soles.
Add the dog sitting or lying beside the boots, kept to a simple rounded body and head since a relaxed dog is easier to draw convincingly than one in motion. Use warm browns and cream for the dog’s coat, with short strokes following the direction fur actually lies, darker around the ears and tail.
The door itself only needs a few lines, a rectangle with a thin strip of icy blue glass showing a hint of snow outside, kept much lighter than the boots and dog so the eye lands on them first.
If drawing a dog feels daunting today, try the quick version: a simple curled shape with two ears and a tail is enough to read clearly at this level.

A kitchen table covered in baking bowls, eggs and a recipe card gives you a nice still life without needing a figure at all. Lay out the composition loosely first with light pencil circles for where each bowl and egg will sit, overlapping a few of them so the table does not look too neatly arranged.
Shade the bowls in cream and sage green, keeping each one’s highlight in the same direction so the light feels consistent across the whole table. Eggs are small ovals with a tiny curved highlight line and a soft grey shadow pooling underneath them, never a hard dark outline.
The recipe card is the detail that pulls the whole scene together: a small rectangle of cream paper with a few wavy lines standing in for handwriting, propped against a bowl rather than lying flat.
Vary it next time by swapping the eggs and bowls for a different task entirely, the same table layout works for anything from bread dough to a birthday cake.
Palette: Cream White,Sage Green,Charcoal Grey,Ochre
Grandmother teaching a child to crack eggs into a bowl is a scene built around the relationship, so start by blocking in two simple figures at different heights, her standing, the child on a stool or stepping stool reaching up to the counter. Keep both bodies as soft rounded shapes before adding any clothing detail.
Her hand guiding the child’s hand over the bowl is the moment worth focusing on: draw the hands close together and slightly overlapping rather than apart, since that is what reads as teaching rather than two people just standing near each other.
Color her cardigan in a muted sage or soft grey and the child’s sweater in cherry red for a little contrast, with the bowl between them in plain cream. Shade both faces lightly, a few soft strokes for cheeks rather than hard lines, which keeps the mood warm rather than overly detailed.
If figures feel tricky today, simplify both to the same basic shape and let the height difference and the hand position do the storytelling instead.
Palette: Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream White,Light Peach
Herbs drying from a rack above a cast iron range brings in a different kind of texture to draw. Start with the rack itself, a simple horizontal bar or a small ladder shape, then hang the herb bunches from it as loose teardrop shapes rather than trying to draw individual leaves one by one.
Color the bunches in dry sage green and muted ochre, using short quick strokes angled outward from the stem to suggest dried leaves without drawing each one, which also keeps the texture looking appropriately crisp rather than fresh and soft.
The range underneath can stay dark and simple, a block of charcoal grey with a hint of cherry red flame glow if you want one burner lit, kept much less detailed than the herbs above it so the eye goes up to the rack first.
One concrete tip for today: vary the tilt of each hanging bunch slightly, perfectly parallel bunches look stiff, while small differences in angle make the rack feel lived in.
Palette: Sage Green,Ochre,Charcoal Grey,Cherry Red
A woman dancing with a wooden spoon while the radio plays is a chance to draw movement rather than stillness. Sketch her first as a simple lean to one side, one arm raised holding the spoon, the other hand resting on her hip, since a clear tilt and a raised arm are what make a pose look like dancing rather than standing.
Keep her skirt or apron drawn with a few sweeping curved lines rather than straight ones, which helps sell the sense of motion even in a still drawing. Color it in cherry red with sage green trim, and add a small radio in the corner with a couple of short curved lines rising from it to suggest sound.
The mistake to watch for is drawing both feet flat on the floor, which kills the motion instantly: lift one heel slightly or angle a foot on its toe instead.
No radio to hand, a simple transistor shape with one dial is enough, you do not need brand detail or knobs.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Cream White,Burnt Sienna
A sage green kitchen with copper pots hanging on rails lets you focus purely on color and repetition rather than a figure. Draw the wall and rail first as simple flat shapes, then hang three or four pots and pans of slightly different sizes along it, varying the spacing so they do not line up too evenly.
Color the walls in sage green with light hatching rather than flat shading, then bring the copper pots to life with warm orange brown layered under a touch of yellow, leaving a bright highlight strip on each one where the rail light would catch the metal.
Copper is the one material in a kitchen drawing that rewards shine: push the highlight almost to white paper on at least one pot, since too even a shade across copper makes it look dull rather than metallic.
For more about cooking drawing scenes full of steam and flour, this kind of kitchen wall makes a good companion piece to a stove or counter drawing.

A tiny city apartment kitchen with snow on the balcony outside works well if you want to draw a sense of scale and contrast. Keep the kitchen itself compact and a little cramped, a narrow counter, a small stove, a single shelf, all fitted into a tight rectangle of space to really sell the apartment feel.
Beyond the window, keep the balcony and falling snow much simpler and paler than the kitchen inside, with a railing suggested in just a few lines. The contrast between a detailed warm interior and a plain cold exterior is what carries this scene, so resist adding much texture outside the glass.
Perspective matters here: keep the window frame’s vertical lines parallel rather than angled, and set the eye level at counter height so you are looking slightly up at the balcony beyond, which makes the small kitchen feel grounded rather than floating.
Finish today by adding one small plant or mug on the counter, a single personal object does more than a row of clutter.
Palette: Cream White,Icy Blue,Sage Green,Charcoal Grey
A happy child licking a mixing bowl clean is a small, joyful subject that works best drawn close up. Fill most of the page with the child’s head and the bowl tipped up to their face, since cropping in tight on this moment reads far better than showing the whole kitchen around it.
Start with the bowl as a simple wide oval tipped at an angle, then place the child’s face peeking over the rim with eyes closed or half closed and a big open smile. Shade a smear of batter around their mouth and on the bowl’s rim in cream and ochre, kept loose and smudgy rather than neatly outlined.
Cheeks and a flush of happiness are the detail to lean into: a soft pink or peach blush drawn with light circular strokes on each cheek sells the mood more than any other single mark on the page.
No peach pencil on hand, a very light layer of red under cream gives the same warm blush.
Palette: Cream White,Ochre,Light Peach,Cherry Red
A cabin kitchen with a wood stove and a kettle on top brings in rougher textures than the smoother enamel and city kitchens drawn so far. Build the wood stove as a simple black box shape first, then add the kettle on top as a smaller rounded form, keeping both much darker and heavier looking than anything else in the scene.
Log walls behind the stove are drawn as a few long horizontal bands rather than individually stacked logs, shaded in warm browns with short vertical strokes for the wood grain texture. Leave small gaps of cream white between bands to suggest the mortar or chinking between logs.
This is a good scene to try the quick ten minute version: stove, kettle and three or four horizontal log bands is enough to read clearly. Given forty minutes, add a small rug, a hanging pot and grain texture on every log.
Keep the stove’s black kept truly flat and dark, any texture added there competes badly with the wood grain around it.
Palette: Charcoal Grey,Burnt Sienna,Cream White,Ochre
Jars of dried beans and lentils lined up on open shelves gives you a chance to practice small repeated texture inside a larger simple shape. Draw each jar as a clean cylinder outline first, then fill the insides with tiny dots or short dashes in different warm colors, varying density so each jar’s contents look distinct from its neighbor.
Keep the jar outlines themselves crisp and mostly uncolored glass, with just a thin highlight line down one side, so the contrast between crisp glass and busy texture inside does the visual work. Shelves stay plain cream or pale wood tone, kept flat so they do not distract from the jars.
The trick for texture here is restraint: fill only about two thirds of each jar with dots rather than packing it completely solid, which keeps the beans looking loose rather than like a solid block of color.
Vary it next time by swapping in grains, dried pasta shapes or spices for a different row entirely using the same jar and shelf setup.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Ochre,Charcoal Grey,Cream White
A cutting board of chopped carrots, leeks and celery for soup is a satisfying close up still life full of color variety. Draw the board itself as a simple rounded rectangle first, then scatter the chopped pieces across it in small clusters rather than a single neat pile, which looks more like someone mid task.
Color the carrots in bright orange with small darker orange rings at the cut ends, the leek slices in pale green and white layered rings, and the celery in a cooler sage green with faint vertical lines for the fibrous texture. Each vegetable needs just one or two colors, kept simple rather than overworked.
The knife resting at the edge of the board is a nice finishing touch: keep its blade mostly unshaded silver with just a thin grey shadow line along one edge, since a heavily shaded knife blade looks dull rather than sharp.
One concrete tip: draw the darkest vegetable, usually the carrot, first, then judge every other color against it.
Palette: Ochre,Sage Green,Cream White,Charcoal Grey
A sink full of soapy dishes after a big Sunday lunch is a scene built almost entirely from bubbles and shapes poking through them. Draw the sink basin first, then place the edges of a few plates, a cup handle and a pot rim breaking the surface at different heights, rather than showing any dish in full.
Bubbles are drawn as loose overlapping circles in icy blue and white, left mostly unshaded with just a few tiny curved highlight lines inside the larger ones. Keep the water and suds taking up most of the basin so the suggestion of a dish is enough, you do not need to draw complete plates underneath.
This is a good one for the lifting trick: once the bubbles are lightly shaded in blue grey, use a kneaded eraser to dab out small irregular highlights across the surface, which reads far more convincingly as soap film than any drawn highlight.
No kneaded eraser on hand, a few confident strokes of white gel pen over the dry pencil layer give a similar sparkle.

A fridge door covered in kids’ drawings and magnets is a fun subject for layering lots of small rectangles and shapes within one larger flat form. Draw the fridge door as a single plain cream rectangle first, then scatter smaller rectangles of paper across it at slightly different angles, since perfectly straight rows look too tidy for a real fridge door.
Each little drawing only needs a few quick scribbled lines in bright colors to suggest a child’s artwork, a sun shape here, a wobbly house there, nothing detailed. Magnets holding each paper in place are tiny colored dots or simple shapes, cherry red and sage green work nicely against the cream door.
Keep the fridge handle and body simple and understated, a single vertical bar and a faint shadow line down one side is enough, so the collage of papers stays the star of the drawing.
Try this today: tilt at least three of the papers at different angles before you add any color, the randomness is what sells the idea.
Palette: Cream White,Cherry Red,Sage Green,Icy Blue
A breakfast nook with a bench, cushions and morning porridge is a cozy corner to draw rather than a task in progress. Start with the bench and table as simple blocky shapes, then pile a few cushions along the bench in different sizes, overlapping them slightly so the seating looks soft and used rather than staged.
Color the cushions in sage green and cherry red with light patterned hatching, while the bowl of porridge on the table stays a plain warm cream with a small swirl of honey or berries drawn in just one or two quick strokes on top.
Morning light through a nearby window is worth deciding on early: if it comes from one side, let that side of the cushions stay pale and the opposite side go slightly darker, which gives the whole nook a believable sense of early light.
A quick version today skips the window entirely and focuses just on the bench, cushions and bowl, which is plenty on its own.
Palette: Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream White,Ochre
A kitchen window with condensation and a heart drawn in it is one of the simplest and most charming small subjects on this list. Draw the window frame first as a plain rectangle, then fill the glass almost entirely with pale icy blue grey to suggest the fogged condensation covering it.
The heart itself is drawn as a cleared shape, not an added line: use a kneaded eraser or simply leave the paper bare in a heart outline while shading the fog around it, so the heart looks wiped clear from the inside rather than drawn on top.
A faint hint of a snowy garden just visible through the cleared heart shape adds a nice touch, kept pale and blurry since it is seen through glass and fog both.
This is a scene you can finish in minutes: shade the fog, clear the heart, add two or three faint shapes beyond the glass, and you are done.

A man in an apron tasting sauce from a wooden spoon is a great subject for practicing a simple facial expression. Block in his head and shoulders first, then draw the spoon lifted close to his mouth, tilting his head slightly down toward it rather than straight ahead, which makes the tasting moment read clearly.
His apron is the biggest shape on the page and the easiest place to add color, cherry red or sage green with a tie at the back drawn as two simple crossing lines. Keep his expression simple too, raised eyebrows and a slightly pursed mouth say “tasting” far more clearly than a fully open smile.
A drip of sauce on the spoon is a small detail that adds a lot: a single teardrop shape in warm red or orange at the spoon’s tip, shaded with a tiny highlight so it catches light like real liquid would.
No red sauce in mind, a golden soup or gravy works just as well in warm ochre tones.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Ochre,Cream White
A tray of roasted root vegetables pulled from the oven is a nice color study built from warm oranges and browns. Draw the roasting tray as a simple rectangle first, then fill it with loosely overlapping shapes for carrots, potatoes and parsnips, keeping every piece slightly irregular rather than perfectly uniform.
Shade each vegetable with a base color first, then add darker caramelized edges in burnt sienna or deep brown along one side of each piece, since roasted vegetables get their char in patches rather than evenly all over. A few small herb flecks in sage green scattered across the top finish the look.
Steam rising off the tray is worth adding last: a couple of pale, barely there curved lines above the vegetables, using the same light touch as the steam from the soup pot earlier in this list.
Vary it next time with a different mix, swap in beets or squash for an even warmer palette across the tray.
Palette: Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Sage Green,Cream White
A Scandinavian white kitchen with candles on the window ledge leans almost entirely on restraint, letting the bare paper do most of the work. Draw the cabinetry and walls with the thinnest possible outlines, since this style depends on very little shading across most of the page.
Place two or three candles on the window ledge as simple tall rectangles with small cherry red flames at the top, the only strong color note in an otherwise cream and white scene. A single sage green plant or sprig nearby adds just enough life without crowding the calm feel.
The window glass itself can stay almost entirely unshaded white, with just a faint icy blue wash near the top edge to suggest cold outside, which keeps the overall mood light and airy rather than heavy.
One concrete tip: shade the candle flames in last and keep them small, oversized flames will throw off the whole quiet balance of the scene.
Palette: Cream White,Cherry Red,Sage Green,Icy Blue
For more pale, airy interior ideas in this mood, the winter scenery drawing list works well as a companion study in the same restrained style.
A dog begging beside a chopping board of cheese is a fun chance to draw a hopeful expression on an animal. Draw the dog sitting with its head tilted slightly up and one paw lifted off the ground, which is the clearest shorthand for begging without needing a complicated pose.
The cheese board itself is just a few simple wedge and block shapes in cream and pale yellow, with small dark dots scattered across one piece for a blue cheese or a few holes in another for a softer variety. Keep the board higher up the page than the dog so there is a clear gap of longing space between them.
Eyes are everything in a begging dog: angle them upward toward the board rather than straight ahead, and add a single small highlight dot in each to give them that pleading sparkle.
If you are short on a cream pencil for the cheese, a pale yellow layered under white works just as well.
Palette: Cream White,Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Charcoal Grey
A kitchen table set for two with soup bowls and napkins is a quiet, balanced still life built from a few repeated shapes. Draw the two place settings as mirror images of each other first, bowl, spoon and folded napkin on each side, which keeps the composition feeling deliberate rather than random.
Color the soup itself in warm ochre or a soft orange, with a thin steam line rising from each bowl kept lighter than the steam in the stove pot drawing earlier, since this steam is from a smaller, cooler surface. Napkins work well in sage green or cherry red, folded into simple triangles rather than elaborate shapes.
Symmetry is the thing to check carefully here: measure the distance from the table’s center line to each bowl before you shade anything, since even a small mismatch between the two settings reads as unbalanced on the page.
Finish today with a small candle or a single sprig between the two bowls to complete the sense of an intentional, shared meal.
Palette: Ochre,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream White
A pot of jam boiling with a sugar thermometer clipped on brings a nice bright splash of cherry red into the kitchen. Draw the pot first as a wide simple cylinder, then clip the thermometer to its rim as a thin vertical line with a small round dial near the top, kept precise since it is the one rigid, mechanical shape against all the soft bubbling jam.
Fill the jam itself with layered cherry red and a touch of burnt sienna for depth, leaving small irregular white highlights scattered across the surface to suggest bubbles breaking through as it boils. Keep these highlights uneven in size rather than evenly spaced, since real bubbles never line up neatly.
Steam rising from the pot can echo the same light touch used for the soup pot earlier, just a few thin pale curves above the rim.
No red pencil deep enough on hand, layer orange first and build cherry red on top for a richer, more jammy color.
You Will Need
- sugar thermometer reference if drawing from a photo
Palette: Cherry Red,Burnt Sienna,Cream White,Charcoal Grey
A cellar pantry with apples in crates and potatoes in sacks takes the pantry idea from earlier in this list and gives it a cooler, dimmer setting. Keep the whole background in deeper charcoal grey this time rather than bright cream, since a cellar reads convincingly darker and cooler than an upstairs kitchen.
Draw the wooden crates as simple open boxes with a few apples piled inside, cherry red and ochre mixed together with small cream highlights, and the potato sacks as soft slouching bag shapes in warm brown burlap texture made from short crosshatched strokes.
Light here usually comes from one small source, a bare bulb or a narrow window high up, so let one side of the crates and sacks catch a warmer glow while the rest sinks into shadow, which does far more to set the cellar mood than any extra detail would.
Keep at least a third of the page in that deep shadow rather than lighting the whole scene evenly.
Palette: Charcoal Grey,Cherry Red,Burnt Sienna,Ochre
A teenager flipping pancakes on a snowy Saturday morning is a lively action scene, so plan the pose before anything else. Sketch the figure with one arm raised mid flip, pan tilted upward, and a pancake drawn in the air just above it with a bit of a gap, since the gap between pan and pancake is what sells the motion.
Color the pancake itself in warm golden brown with a darker ring near the edge, and keep the kitchen behind simple, a stove, a window with falling snow outside, drawn with less detail than the figure so attention stays on the flip.
Hair and loose clothing caught mid movement help too: a few strands or a sleeve drawn flicking slightly to one side reinforces the sense that everything in the scene is in motion for just that one second.
A quick version today draws just the arm, pan and flying pancake close up, skipping the rest of the kitchen entirely.
Palette: Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Icy Blue,Cream White
A kitchen counter laid out with ingredients for dumpling day is a busy, rewarding still life once you have a few of these scenes under your belt. Draw the counter as one long surface first, then lay out small circles of dough, a bowl of filling, a rolling pin and a tray of finished dumplings in loose clusters rather than a strict grid.
Shade the raw dough circles in pale cream with the faintest grey shadow underneath each, and the filled, pleated dumplings in a slightly deeper tone with a few short curved lines along the top edge to suggest the pleats without drawing every fold.
Keep the filling bowl’s contents simple, a mix of greens and browns blended loosely together rather than picked apart ingredient by ingredient, since from a slight distance a dumpling filling reads as texture, not detail.
One concrete tip: group the finished dumplings together on one side of the tray and leave the raw dough scattered more loosely on the other, the contrast in order says “in progress” clearly.
Palette: Cream White,Sage Green,Burnt Sienna,Charcoal Grey
A stand mixer whipping cream beside a tray of scones lets you draw a machine alongside a bake, which is a nice contrast of hard and soft shapes. Draw the mixer’s body as a simple curved form with the bowl beneath it, and leave the whisk attachment as just a few thin crossing lines rather than a fully detailed shape.
The cream inside the bowl is built from soft white swirls with very pale grey shadow in the folds, kept loose and a little messy since whipped cream never sits in clean lines. Beside it, a tray of scones in warm golden brown with a crumbly top texture made from short varied strokes completes the pairing.
Metal surfaces on the mixer reward the same bold highlight approach as the copper pots and kettle earlier in this list: one confident light strip left almost white against a darker grey body reads as shiny far better than an even grey all over.
Swap in a hand mixer instead if a stand mixer is not what sits on your own counter, the same cream and bowl approach still works.
Palette: Charcoal Grey,Cream White,Ochre,Burnt Sienna
A cat curled in a basket of clean tea towels is a soft, cozy counterpoint to the earlier cat watching snow from the counter, so try a totally different pose this time: fully curled into a tight circle, head tucked, barely more than a loaf shape with ears. Draw the basket first as a simple woven oval, then nest the cat shape inside it rather than on top.
The tea towels poking out around the cat are drawn as soft folded rectangles in sage green and cream, their edges slightly rumpled rather than crisp, since a cat curled into fresh laundry always leaves it a little mussed. Shade the cat itself in warm grey or ginger tones with short strokes curving around the body’s circular shape.
Keep the basket weave suggested rather than fully drawn, a few short diagonal lines around the rim are enough, drawing every woven strand will fight for attention against the cat’s fur.
Try this today: draw the cat’s shape before the basket’s rim, then fit the basket around it so the two nest together naturally.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Sage Green,Cream White,Charcoal Grey
Friends crowded around a tiny kitchen island making pizza dough is the most figure heavy scene on this list, so simplify each person as much as possible: three or four basic rounded bodies leaning in from different sides of the island, overlapping slightly at the edges to show how crowded the space really is.
Give each figure one small distinguishing color, a cherry red sweater here, a sage green apron there, rather than detailing every outfit fully, which keeps the group readable at a glance instead of busy. The dough itself sits in the center as a pale cream circle, flattened and a little uneven, with flour dust scattered around it in white gel pen.
Hands reaching in from different directions toward the dough are what sell the “crowded around” feeling: vary their heights and angles rather than lining them up evenly.
If a group feels like too much today, start with just two figures and the dough, you can always add a third later.
You Will Need
- white gel pen for flour dust

A row of herb pots on the inside sill of a frosty kitchen pairs living green plants against a cold window, a nice contrast after the dried herb rack drawn earlier. Draw three or four small terracotta pots in a row first, then fill each with a different simple leaf shape, basil as rounded leaves, rosemary as thin needles, so the row has visible variety even from a distance.
Color the pots in warm burnt sienna with a pale rim, and the leaves in fresh sage green rather than the dry, dusty tone used for hanging dried herbs, since these are alive and need a brighter, cleaner color to read that way.
Behind the pots, a hint of frost on the glass in pale icy blue, left mostly as bare white paper with just the edges softly shaded, finishes the contrast between the warm living plants and the cold world outside.
One concrete tip: make the rosemary needles with quick short flicks of the pencil rather than long single strokes, which keeps them looking properly bristly.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Sage Green,Icy Blue,Cream White
If you enjoy this kind of plant and window pairing, the kitchen watercolor art list has several similar window sill scenes worth browsing for more ideas.
A kitchen door open to a snowy garden with a bird feeder draws the eye straight outside, so treat this one almost like two drawings in one: a dark, cozy kitchen frame around a bright, cold garden view. Draw the door frame first as a simple arch or rectangle, kept in deeper warm tones, before sketching the garden beyond it in much paler, cooler colors.
The bird feeder hangs from a simple post or branch a little way into the garden, with one or two small birds, round bodies and tiny beaks, perched on or near it. Keep the birds small relative to the whole scene, since they are a detail inside the view rather than the main subject.
Snow on the ground and feeder roof is best left as bare white paper rather than heavily shaded, with just a thin grey shadow line along each snowy edge to give it some form.
For more small birds in snowy settings like this one, the cardinal drawing list is worth a look, and the winter morning drawing ideas share a similar cozy indoor to outdoor framing.

A toddler on the floor banging pots with a spoon makes a lively closing scene full of energy and noise. Draw the toddler sitting cross legged or kneeling first, a simple rounded body with short limbs, one arm raised mid swing with a wooden spoon, a pot tipped over in front of them.
Scatter a second pot or lid nearby on its side, since a single neat pot does not read as chaos the way two or three scattered ones do. Color the toddler’s outfit in cherry red or sage green, kept bright and simple, with the pots themselves in plain charcoal grey or dull silver so the child’s bright clothing stands out clearly against them.
Motion lines are the one hands on trick worth adding here: a few short curved lines around the raised spoon and around a tipped lid suggest the clatter and movement without needing any complicated effect.
Finish today with a big open mouthed expression on the toddler, since that one detail carries most of the energy in the whole scene.

Pick whichever corner of the kitchen is calling to you today, a jar on a shelf for a quick ten minutes or the full dumpling counter if you have longer, grab a bright white sheet of paper and your warmest colored pencils, and let the steam and flour do the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What colored pencils work best for kitchen drawing?
A set with warm browns, greens, reds and greys covers most kitchen scenes well. Look for pencils that layer smoothly so you can build copper, wood and enamel tones by blending a few colors rather than owning every shade.
How do you draw steam so it looks realistic in colored pencil?
Draw steam as a few thin curved lines that get lighter as they rise, rather than solid shapes. Leaving bare white paper between the curls does more work than heavy shading, so keep your pencil pressure very light.
How do I keep a kitchen drawing from looking too busy?
Pick one main subject and let everything else stay simple and lightly shaded. A detailed figure or object against a plain background reads far more clearly than every corner of the kitchen drawn in equal detail.
What is the easiest kitchen scene for a first attempt?
A single object like a kettle or a jar on a shelf is the easiest starting point. Simple rounded shapes with one or two colors let you practice shading and highlights before adding a figure or a full room.
How do you make colored pencil highlights look bright and clean?
Leave the brightest areas as bare white paper rather than pencil over them at all. A white gel pen added afterward can sharpen a highlight further, but the cleanest whites always come from paper you never touched.
