Table of Contents
This retro Christmas diorama set brings back the candy-colored, big-eyed charm of old aluminum trees and mid-century greeting cards, with eighteen tiny stages to print and build. Each one opens like a little room inside a familiar holiday object: a Santa boot, a cookie jar, a punch bowl, a gift box, all filled with kitsch housewives, couples and grandmothers going about their 1950s Christmas. Glue one onto a card front for a friend or a grandmother, or tuck a whole row into a junk journal spread.
Print the sheets on matte cardstock at actual size, then cut around each shape with a thin white edge left showing for a clean finished look. From there it is scissors, glue and foam dots, no special tools needed.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Parties and Gatherings
A pink aluminum tree tin opens at the front to show a hostess serving eggnog to her friends, with a color wheel lamp cycling light across the little room and snow piling on the window behind them.
Glue this one onto a cherry red card mat for a friend who still strings tinsel the old way, and let the lamp’s glow be the spot you add a touch of gold glitter by hand.
Trading the quiet eggnog scene for a livelier one, a punch bowl is cut open to reveal a hostess ladling drinks for guests holding cocktails, with a starry window glittering behind the party.
Pair it with the Pink Tree Tin Hostess diorama for a matching set of two party-themed cards, perfect for a hostess gift or a New Year note sent together.
Filling peppermint jars behind a brass till, a shopkeeper lady works inside a candy machine opened at the front while snow falls past the shop window outside.
Fireside Evenings
wrapping presents together on the floor of a Santa boot opened at the front, a 1950s couple works by lamplight while a cat naps in a nearby box and a snowy street glows behind them through the window.
hanging stockings by a crackling fire, a couple fills their living room tucked inside an opened Santa sack, with a starry window glowing above the mantel.
This one works well on a tall card base with a strip of lace along the bottom edge, since the sack’s round shape leaves room to frame it simply.
asleep in armchairs on Christmas Eve, an elderly couple rests inside a mantel clock opened at the front, with a lit tree glowing nearby and snow drifting past the window outside.
sharing cocoa under a plaid blanket, an elderly couple settles into a sled-shaped room lit by a lantern, with snowy hills rolling away behind them through the open back.
Send this one to a grandmother or an older aunt who loves a quiet winter evening, and raise just the lantern on a foam dot for a soft bit of dimension.
Morning Scenes
finding her presents on Christmas morning, a lady in curlers and a robe kneels beside the tree inside a big gift box opened at the front, a coffee cup warming nearby as sunrise fills the window.
decorating a tiny tree perched on top of a cake, a lady works under a glass cake dome lifted for the scene, with a bowl of frosting beside her and snow gathering outside the window.
twirling with a broom to music drifting from a kitchen radio opened at the front, a housewife dances through her chores while tinsel catches the light and a starry sky glows behind her.
Try this one as the anchor of a journal spread about favorite Christmas songs, with the lyrics written in the margin around it.
Friends and Visits
swapping small wrapped gifts over tea, two friends sit together inside a teapot opened at the front, a plate of cookies between them and a snowy garden visible out back.
singing carols from a hymn book held in gloved hands, a lady stands inside a lantern opened at the front, a lamp post glowing beside her and snowy rooftops stretching behind.
rolling out dough for gingerbread men, a grandma works inside a cookie jar opened at the front, a rolling pin close at hand and snow gathering on the window behind her.
Hand this one to a grandchild to color the gingerbread cutters before gluing, since the plain shapes leave easy room for crayon or colored pencil.
Outdoor and Travel
decorating a tiny tree together, a couple works inside a vintage camper trailer opened at the side, string lights looped overhead and snowy pines standing behind the camper.
hanging a fresh wreath on her own front door, a lady stands framed inside a wreath-shaped doorway, a doormat below her feet and a snowy porch stretching out behind.
passing out cookies to passengers, a lady moves through a gingerbread train car opened at the side, candy-cane rails running past and a snowy valley unfolding behind the train.
This pairs naturally with the Grandma Baking Gingerbread diorama for two cards built around the same sweet theme, sent together to a cookie-loving friend.
Kitchen and Home
glazing the Christmas ham with a long-handled brush, a housewife stands inside a roasting pan opened like a kitchen, a gravy boat waiting nearby and frost creeping across the window.
trying on a fur hat before a tall mirror, a lady admires herself inside a department store box opened at the front, gift boxes stacked around her and a snowy city glowing through the window.

Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for a retro Christmas diorama set like this?
Matte cardstock gives the cleanest cut and the truest colors for this set. Avoid glossy photo paper, since it can make the cutting lines slip and adds a sheen that looks wrong against the flat retro palette.
What printer settings give the sharpest kitsch outlines?
Print at actual size with the highest quality or photo setting your printer offers. Turn off any automatic scaling so the crisp outlines and starburst details stay sharp rather than soft.
How do you make one of these dioramas sit up in 3D on a card?
Print the sheet twice, cut the inner figures and props from one copy, then raise them on small foam adhesive dots over the matching background on the other copy. This lifts the housewife or couple just enough to cast a small shadow.
What card size suits these retro Christmas scenes?
A standard A2 or square card base suits most of these dioramas well, since each one is designed to sit inside a simple mat with room to spare. Leave a thin white edge around the cut shape for a cleaner finished look.
Can these dioramas go into a junk journal instead of a card?
Yes, several of these scenes work well as a journal spread anchor, especially the teapot, the cookie jar or the radio, with room around them for handwritten notes or carol lyrics.
