Table of Contents
This ballet junk journal kit gathers the prettiest corners of a dancer’s world onto one printable sheet set: pink pointe shoes on a rehearsal room floor, a tutu on a dress form waiting for its tiara, a velvet stage scattered with roses after the final bow. Twenty scene pages carry the story, four seamless background papers give you something to build pockets and covers from, and five lined writing pages leave room for your own words about the dance.
Print the set on matte cardstock heavy enough to take glue without curling, choose your printer’s best photo or high quality setting, and trim close to the edge before you bind the pages into a journal. Everything on the sheet is already finished, so once it is cut down you are ready to glue, write and tuck straight away.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Rehearsal Room Pages
Pink pointe shoes with their ribbons loosely coiled sit on the rehearsal room floor beside a wooden barre, the whole page painted edge to edge.
Pair this page with the pointe shoe ribbon border lined page further on in the set: glue the scene on the left of a spread and let the matching border sit opposite it, so the ribbons seem to run from one page into the other.
A layered tutu waits on a dress form with a tiara balanced on top, a small posy of roses at its base and a tall mirror leaning behind.
Glue a scrap of real ribbon or a tiny paper rose cutout at the base of this page before sealing it in, so the tulle has something small and dimensional to reach toward on the shelf below it.
A ballerina stretches at the barre beside tall windows, morning light falling in warm stripes across the rehearsal room floor around her.
The usual mistake with a page like this is gluing it flat into the middle of a spread where the light gets lost; instead mount it near the gutter so the window stripes seem to spill onto the facing page.
An upright piano fills one corner of the rehearsal room, a vase of peonies on its lid and a pair of slippers left on the bench below.
This page suits the dancer who studied music before she studied ballet, or the daughter who still practices scales before class: write her name small in the corner where the piano keys meet the wall.
A line of little ballerinas in tutus stands ready at the barre in a sunny studio, a piano waiting in the background and sunlight pooling across the floor.
Dressing Room And Keepsake Pages
Stage makeup, loose hairpins and a bun net scatter across a dressing table where a small bunch of roses leans against the mirror frame.
Tuck a real bobby pin or a scrap of ribbon under the corner of this page when you glue it in, something small enough to flatten under the next few pages without making the journal bulge.
A music box with a twirling ballerina figure sits open on a shelf, a string of pearls and a lace handkerchief draped beside it.
Write a short answer on this page: what tune would play if your own life had a music box, and who first wound it for you.
A ballet bag tips open on the floor, spilling a leotard, a pair of tights, slippers and a loose hair ribbon across the boards.
Five minute version: skip the full background wash and simply glue this page flat into your journal as is, then add one line about the last class you packed for underneath it.
A costume of white feathers hangs beside a window looking out over a still lake, the kind of piece built for the swan role in every dancer’s favorite ballet.
Pair this page with the swan feather corner lined page near the end of the set, writing your own memory of first seeing that ballet on the lines opposite the hanging costume.
A tiny ballerina figurine spins atop a jewelry box, pearls spilling from a half open drawer and a perfume bottle standing close by.
A kitten bats at a trailing ballet shoe ribbon on the wooden floor, the shoes themselves tipped onto their sides nearby.
This is the page for the youngest reader of the journal, the little sister or granddaughter who loves the family cat more than the ballet itself: let her glue in a photo of her own pet beside it.
Stage And Curtain Pages
Velvet curtains frame a theater stage lit by footlights, a single bouquet left resting on the boards after the house has emptied out.
Tea stain the edges of this page lightly before gluing it in; the warmth it leaves along the curtain folds reads like old stage lighting rather than ordinary wear.
A pair of opera glasses rests on a velvet theater seat, a lace fan and a single rose laid beside them as the lights dim for the next act.
A ballerina sits on a wooden bench tying the ribbons of her pointe shoe, a cardigan folded beside her against the evening chill.
Give this page a small window: cut a flap in the painted bench and tuck a photo or ticket stub behind it, something that peeks out when the page is turned.
Tutus crowd a costume rack backstage, layers of tulle, feathers and sequins catching the low light between performances.
Try the window technique here too: cut a small slit between two hanging tutus and slide in a strip of real tulle ribbon, so one costume on the page has genuine texture to touch.
A dancer bows low on stage as roses land scattered at her feet, the curtain beginning to draw closed behind her.
Windowsill And Garden Pages
A pink tulle skirt and a pair of satin slippers rest on a windowsill beside a jar of tulips, caught in the quiet light of an open window.
If this is going into a gift journal, this is the page for the dancer who grew up in that bedroom window seat, the one who still keeps her first pair of slippers somewhere close by.
Ropes and pulleys hang in the backstage wings, a costume trunk propped open nearby while a dancer waits in the shadows for her cue.
What was she waiting for, that last minute before the music started: write the answer on the page itself, right along the edge where the shadow meets the light.
Two dancers move through a pas de deux on a stage lit in soft pastel light, a painted garden backdrop stretching behind them.
Place this page as the closing spread of the set, facing the stage curtain frame lined page, so the last image in the journal is the pair of dancers mid turn with room to write just beside them.
A Christmas tree towers over the Nutcracker stage, a toy soldier standing guard near drifting snowflakes and a scatter of fallen tinsel.
Background Papers
Small pointe shoes and loose ribbon bows repeat in an all over pattern across the sheet in soft blush and lilac. Use it under a photo of a recital, as a pocket lining inside the front cover, or trimmed down to wrap a small gift tucked between pages.
Soft drifts of tulle and single pearls scatter in a repeating pattern across the page, light and airy from corner to corner. Try it behind a dressing table photo, as a cover for the whole journal, or cut into strips for a border along a dark lined page.
Small ballerina silhouettes toss across the page in a loose repeating arrangement, each one caught mid pose against the pale ground. Use it as an end paper, a pocket lining behind the theater stage scene, or trimmed for a strip along the spine of the journal.
Satin ribbon loops twist between small roses in a repeating pattern that runs to every edge of the sheet. Set it under a keepsake photo, use it to line the inside of the back cover, or wrap it around a folded pocket for ticket stubs.
Lined Writing Pages
Trailing pointe shoe ribbons run along the side of this lined page, framing faint ruled lines left open in the middle. Write a gift list for a dancer, a short letter to your younger self at a first recital, or the date and details of an upcoming performance.
A small tutu and tiara sit along the top of this page as a header, faint lines running beneath them ready for an entry. Jot a menu for a recital tea, a packing list for costume fittings, or a note tucked in for the dancer in the family.
A simple ballet barre runs along the bottom edge of this page, faint lines stacked above it for a longer entry. Use it for a practice log, a list of favorite ballets seen this year, or a letter to next year about how the dancing went.
Velvet stage curtains frame the edges of this page like a proscenium, faint lines left open in the center for writing. Record a program note from a performance, a review in your own words, or a short list of who came to watch.
White feathers gather softly in one corner of this page, faint lines running across the rest of the sheet. Write a reflection on a favorite role, a letter to next year’s self, or a short list of music that always brings the dance to mind.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, trim the pages down together, and start gluing from the rehearsal room scenes forward so the story moves naturally toward the stage; for more pretty page ideas to pair with this set, browse the ballet watercolor ideas or the first page ideas for a new journal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for a ballet junk journal?
Matte cardstock around 60 to 65lb holds color well and takes glue without curling. Heavier stock also stands up to tucking in ribbons, photos or ticket stubs without the page sagging over time.
What printer settings give the clearest pages?
Select your printer’s best or photo quality setting on plain or matte cardstock, not the draft mode. This keeps the fine ink outlines sharp and stops the pastel washes from printing patchy.
What size should I print these pages at?
Standard letter or A4 size suits most home printers and binds easily into a handmade journal. Trim a little from each edge after printing so the color runs cleanly to the border.
Do I need to color these pages myself?
No, every page prints fully in color and is ready to use straight away. You only need scissors, glue and a trimmer to cut the pages down and bind them into your journal.
Can I mix these pages with other journal kits?
Yes, the soft pastel palette pairs easily with other vintage or floral printable sets. Many crafters combine a themed kit like this with a general flower page set for extra variety.
