Table of Contents
This farm junk journal gathers twenty sunny scenes of barns, meadows and farmyard animals, the kind of pages that turn a plain notebook into something you reach for again and again. The set moves from a red barn and silo through cows, piglets, sheep, a farm stand and a porch with rocking chairs, then settles into quieter corners like a kitchen table and a wheat field at dusk.
Along with the twenty scene pages you get four seamless background papers for linings and covers, plus four lined writing pages ready for your own farm stories. Print everything on matte cardstock heavy enough to take glue without curling, set your printer to its best quality or photo setting, and trim close to the edge before you tuck each sheet into your journal.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Barnyard Landmarks
Set the scene for the whole journal with the barn itself: red boards, a tall silo, hay bales stacked by a white fence under a wide farm sky.
Tea-stain just the bottom edge of this one before you glue it in, so the hay bales look sun-baked and the white fence keeps its crisp line above the stain.
Let the stained edge dry flat under a heavy book overnight. A light stain reads as afternoon light, a darker one works better near the back of the journal where pages tend to look more worn.
Meadow and Pasture
Grazing cows, a scatter of buttercups and one broad oak giving shade make this the page for a quiet afternoon entry about slow days on the land.
Write a short list of this season’s firsts along the open sky above the wall: first lamb, first blossom, first warm day, whatever marks the start of things on a farm.
Barnyard Animals
The usual mistake here is painting the mud too dark and flat, which swallows the piglets. Keep it a warm brown with lighter highlights so the pink piglets and yellow sunflowers still stand out against the trough.
Goats perched on a hay wagon with a curious kid peeking out make a lively page near the journal’s middle, a good spot to break up the quieter meadow pages around it.
This one suits the reader whose journal is a gift for a horse-loving niece or granddaughter: a saddle on its rack, a bridle hung on a hook, a bucket of oats by the stall door.
Fields and Farm Work
Glue a torn fuel receipt or a hand-drawn ticket stub onto the corner of this page, the kind of small kept thing that makes a farm journal feel lived in rather than decorated.
Pair this page with the feed sack calico background from the back of this set, using it as a pocket lining behind the milk cans for tucking in a small recipe card.
A windmill pump turns slowly above a stone cattle trough while cows wander the pasture beyond, a wide quiet page that gives a busy spread somewhere to rest.
Farmyard Corners
Answer this on the page itself: which animal on the farm has the most personality, and why does it always seem to know when you’re watching.
Turkeys fan their feathers and geese stand guard by a wooden gate here, the kind of busy, noisy corner every working farmyard keeps somewhere near the house.
Place this page opposite the red barn scene at the front of the journal, so the spread reads as outside and inside: the barn from the yard, then the hayloft within it.
A pitchfork leans against loose hay while kittens curl together in the straw. The pairing gives a new journal its very first proper spread without any extra planning.
Farmhouse Life
Two rocking chairs, a folded quilt and a dog stretched out at the top of the steps turn this into the page readers come back to most, the quiet heart of the whole set.
Keep the five-minute version simple: glue this page in flat, no trimming or staining, and let the fresh bread and milk jug carry the whole spread on their own.
Harvest and Garden
Rows of cabbages and beans run toward a scarecrow standing watch, a page for anyone who keeps her own kitchen garden and wants somewhere to record what came up this year.
Tuck a handwritten price list or a small paper bag behind this page as a pocket, the sort of thing that makes a farm stand scene feel like it came straight from a real roadside table.
Bushel baskets sit beneath an apple tree while a ladder leans against its trunk, ready for the top branches still waiting to be picked before the light fades.
Give the beginner version of this page a try first: paint just the donkey and pony sharing hay, then add the split rail fence and grass once you feel steady with the shapes.
Place this beside the sheep shearing page for a last spread that slows the journal down, a lane through poppies leading the eye all the way to a small farmhouse on the hill.
Background Papers
Bundles of fleece sit stacked in baskets while shears rest nearby, marking one of the farm calendar’s busiest days and a natural spot for a short note about the season’s work.
Small tossed farm animals in a scatter work well as a cover lining, a pocket backing behind a scene page, or a border trimmed into strips for tucking between entries.
Use this one behind a photo of the farmhouse itself, as the inside cover of the journal, or cut into tags for labelling each season’s pages.
The soft spots and daisies here suit a pocket lining for the meadow pages, a photo mat, or a simple cover for the whole journal if you want something lighter than the barn paper.
Lined Writing Pages
This calico print works as a pocket lining behind the milk can page, a cover wrap, or small strips cut for tying bundles of smaller pages together.
Use the space below the barn and silo header for a gift list for the farm stand, a short letter to next year’s self, or the day’s chore list written out in full.
Write a simple farm menu down this page, a few lines about the weather this week, or notes for a visitor on what to pack before coming to stay.
Keep a short parade of hens, sheep and a pig along the base of the page while you write a list of names for new animals, a recipe, or a letter to next year.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, sort the pages into their groups, and start gluing from the red barn at the front through to the wheat sheaf lined page at the back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for a farm junk journal kit?
Matte cardstock around 65 to 90 lb holds the colour well and takes glue without curling. Avoid glossy photo paper, it resists ink and glue and makes the pages slippery to handle once bound.
What printer settings give the best results?
Set the printer to its best quality or photo setting on matte or cardstock mode. This keeps the fine ink outlines crisp and stops the pastel washes looking patchy or faded.
What size should I print the pages?
Standard US letter or A4 suits most journals and binders. Trim close to the edge after printing so the painted background runs right to the border of each page.
Do I need anything special to glue the pages in?
A plain acid free glue stick works well and dries flat without wrinkling the paper. Keep small scissors on hand for trimming edges and cutting pockets from the background papers.
Can I mix these pages with other junk journal kits?
Yes, the soft pastel palette and farmhouse motifs sit well beside most vintage or nature themed kits. Pair a background paper from this set with a scene from another for a varied spread.
