31 Autumn Sketchbook Ideas From Apple Orchards and Muddy Walks

An autumn sketchbook works best when every page tells a small story instead of showing a single leaf or pumpkin sitting alone. The thirty one scenes below each put a person or an animal doing something specific inside a fall setting, so the page reads like a moment rather than a study sheet.

Everything here fits in one gouache sitting, starts simple and gets a little busier as the list goes on. Pick whichever scene matches your mood tonight and paint it in rust, ochre and deep green with the light low and warm.

Girl Jumping a Puddle

Start with a cheap flat brush and block the puddle first as one loose rust-brown shape on the ground, before the girl exists at all. Painting the reflection before the figure keeps the water looking wet instead of like a gray patch added on top.

Drop her yellow boots in while that puddle shape is still a little damp, so the color bleeds softly at the edges. Keep the splash as three or four flicked dots of white gouache, added dry and last of all.

Fox Under a Red Maple

Measure the fox against the tree trunk before you paint either one: a fox standing is roughly as tall as the trunk is wide at its base, and that comparison keeps the scale believable. Sketch the trunk first, then size the fox to it rather than guessing.

Once the proportion is marked in pencil, block the maple canopy as one warm red mass and let the fox sit in its shadow, slightly smaller than first instinct suggests. Small is what makes the tree feel big.

Farmer Stacking Pumpkins on a Cart

Light this one from one side only, low and warm, the way late afternoon sun comes in across a field. That single light source means every pumpkin gets one bright ochre cheek and one rust-shadowed side, and the farmer’s back stays mostly in shadow facing the cart.

Keep the cart’s far side darker than its near side to show it receding, and let the longest shadows fall away from the sun rather than straight down. That one decision carries the whole scene.

Grandpa Raking Leaves With His Dog

Dry brush does the real work on this one. Load a flat brush with ochre gouache, wipe most of it off on a scrap, then drag it sideways over the leaf pile so the bristle marks read as scattered leaves rather than a solid mound.

Paint the dog mid-leap with its edges slightly soft, using the same dry brush technique along its back, so the leaves it kicks up blend into its fur instead of sitting as a hard outline. Keep grandpa’s rake handle as one clean dark line last.

Kids Picking Apples From a Ladder

The usual mistake here is painting the ladder too upright and the kids too stiff on it, which flattens the whole scene. Angle the ladder so it leans into the tree at roughly the same slant as a real one would, and bend at least one knee or elbow on the child reaching for fruit.

Fix it halfway by checking the angle against the tree trunk: if the ladder looks parallel to the trunk rather than leaning toward it, tilt it before you add another color. For more orchard color ideas, this autumn sketching guide has a few worth trying next.

Woman Carrying a Pumpkin Home

Ten minutes gets you the woman’s silhouette, the pumpkin held against her hip, and a flat wash of road beneath her feet. That alone reads as a finished small scene if you stop there and let the background stay a soft ochre haze.

Forty minutes adds a fence line, a few trees in rust and green receding behind her, and a cast shadow stretching long across the road. The extra time goes into depth, not detail on the figure itself.

Boy Flying a Kite in a Stubble Field

Next time you paint this, change the wind direction. A kite leaning hard to the left reads completely differently from one straight overhead, and the boy’s stance, string angle and even his hair all need to follow whichever way you choose.

For this version, keep the string as one single confident pencil line before any paint goes down, since a shaky string line is the fastest way to ruin the whole composition. Paint the stubble field in short dry-brush strokes of ochre once the figure and kite are set.

Old Dog Watching Leaves Fall

Put down three marks and stop to look. First, the dog’s seated silhouette in a mid-brown. Second, the single tree trunk behind it. Third, one or two leaves mid-fall, placed slightly off from the dog’s eye line so it looks like it is tracking their drift.

Everything else, the texture of the fur and the scatter of leaves already on the ground, comes last and only after those three anchor shapes feel balanced on the page.

Couple Sharing a Thermos on a Bench

A round brush size 6 or 8 is the right tool here, not a fine liner brush, because the whole scene depends on soft warm shapes rather than crisp lines. A bigger brush forces you to simplify the bench, the coats and the thermos into clean blocks of color, which is exactly what keeps a small figure scene from looking fussy.

Save the smallest brush only for the steam rising off the thermos lid, painted as one or two curling white strokes at the very end.

Child Collecting Conkers in a Basket

Measure the basket against the child kneeling: it should sit at roughly knee height when she crouches, which keeps her believably scaled to it rather than looking like a toy basket or a giant one. Sketch her kneeling pose first, then size the basket to her knee.

Once that proportion is set, the conkers themselves can be loose dabs of dark rust-brown, three or four in her hand and a scatter already in the basket.

Scarecrow Watching Over a Pumpkin Patch

Light the scarecrow from low and behind, so its straw-stuffed arms throw long shadows across the pumpkin rows. That backlight also means the front of the scarecrow stays mostly in silhouette, which is a shortcut that saves you painting fiddly fabric detail.

Keep the pumpkins in the foreground brighter and warmer than the ones further back, since that temperature shift alone will carry most of the sense of distance across the patch.

Hiker Crossing a Wooden Footbridge

Painting water under a bridge trips people up because they paint it too calm. Drag the brush horizontally in short strokes with a slightly drier mix to break the reflection of the hiker and the railing into broken streaks instead of a mirror-smooth surface.

Fix it halfway through by checking whether the water reflection has any texture at all. If it looks like glass, go back over it with a few quick horizontal strokes before moving on to the trees.

Grandmother Baking Pie by a Window

The window frame does double duty here: it is both a shape to paint and the single light source for the whole scene. Decide where the sun sits outside that window first, then let it fall across the grandmother’s hands and the pie crust, leaving the rest of the kitchen dimmer.

That one choice means you only need to fully render the lit side of her face and the pie, and the shadowed half of the room can stay a loose wash of deep green and rust.

Boy Carving a Pumpkin on the Porch Steps

Start with the pumpkin’s cut lid as a single confident curved line, since getting that curve right first makes every later mark around it sit correctly. Second mark is the boy’s hands gripping the knife. Third is the porch step beneath him.

Leave the carved pumpkin face, the pulp on newspaper and the string lights overhead for last, once those three anchor shapes hold the composition together on their own.

Woman Painting the Orchard on a Fold-Out Stool

A size 4 round brush is the right size for the woman’s small painted canvas within this scene, since it needs to read as a tiny blurred version of the orchard rather than a detailed second painting. Anything bigger and it competes with the real trees around her.

Keep her easel and stool simple geometric shapes, legs crossing at clear angles, so the eye reads them instantly and moves straight to her face and the orchard beyond.

Farmhand Loading Hay Bales

Count the bales before you paint any texture on them. Three stacked bales should line up so the top one sits at roughly the farmhand’s shoulder height when he stands beside them, which keeps the whole stack convincingly sized against him.

Once that comparison is marked in pencil, the straw texture itself is just quick dry-brush strokes of ochre over a mid-brown base, pulled in one direction only.

Girl Reading Under a Falling-Leaf Tree

Ten minutes covers the girl seated against the trunk, book in hand, and the tree’s basic canopy shape in one flat rust mass. That much already makes a complete, cozy little page.

Forty minutes adds individual falling leaves caught mid-drift around her, a few scattered already on her lap and the ground, and a second lighter green layer in the grass to separate it from the tree’s shadow.

Cyclist Riding Through a Leaf Tunnel

Eye level sits low here, close to the cyclist’s own height, which pushes the tree branches overhead into a converging arch rather than a flat row. Sketch that arch first as two curved lines meeting toward a vanishing point ahead of the rider.

With that perspective marked in, the leaves lining the path can be loose dabs of rust and ochre getting smaller and closer together as they recede toward the same point.

Shepherd Moving Sheep Past a Hedgerow

The usual mistake with a flock is painting every sheep the same size, which flattens the whole group into a pattern rather than a scene. Vary them: the sheep nearest the viewer should be noticeably larger than the ones further down the lane.

Fix it halfway through by stepping back from the page and checking whether the flock reads as a line receding into distance or as a flat row. Resize the farthest sheep smaller if needed before adding the shepherd’s dog.

Fisherman Casting From a Misty Riverbank

Lift color back out with a damp clean brush to build the mist along the riverbank, rather than trying to paint fog as a solid shape. Lay the trees and water down first, let them dry just slightly, then lift a soft band of color from the lower half of the background.

That lifted band reads as mist settling over the water, and it is far more convincing than a flat gray wash painted on top.

Beekeeper Checking Hives Among Falling Leaves

Keep the hive boxes as simple stacked rectangles, lightly shaded on one side only, since fussing over wood grain detail here steals attention from the beekeeper’s protective veil and gloves, which carry the story of the scene.

Dry brush a few loose leaves drifting past the hives last, letting one or two overlap the beekeeper’s shoulder so the figure feels placed inside the scene rather than standing in front of it.

Grandfather and Grandson Fishing From a Rowboat

Measure the rowboat against the two figures seated in it: a small rowboat is usually about three seated-figure-lengths long, and keeping that ratio stops the boat from looking either cramped or oversized on the water.

Once the boat and figures are sketched to that scale, the water around them can stay loose, just a few horizontal strokes in deep green with rust reflections from the shoreline trees.

Woman Sketching a Covered Bridge

A smaller round brush, size 2 or 3, earns its place only for the woman’s sketchbook page within this scene, kept as a few quick pencil-colored lines suggesting a drawing rather than a finished second picture. Everything else in the scene can use a bigger brush.

That contrast in brush size, tiny detail inside, loose broad strokes outside, is what makes the covered bridge and trees feel big and the sketchbook feel small and personal.

Children Building a Leaf Fort

Light from one low warm source again, but this time let it rake across the leaf pile itself so each handful the kids pile on catches a bright ochre edge against a rust-shadowed underside. That single lighting choice gives the pile real volume without extra blending.

Keep the children’s poses active, mid-throw or mid-stack, since a leaf fort scene with still figures loses the sense of a game actually happening.

Postman Delivering Mail on a Country Lane

Start with the postman’s bicycle as one continuous gesture line before adding any wheels or frame detail, since a bike sketched wheel-first almost always ends up leaning the wrong way. Get that lean right first, then build the frame around it.

Second mark is the figure astride it, third is the mailbag slung across his shoulder. The lane, hedgerow and scattered leaves all come after, once the bike itself sits convincingly on the page.

Artist Painting a Mill Pond at Dusk

Next time this scene comes round, change the season of light within autumn itself: paint it at dusk instead of midday, which pushes the whole palette toward deeper rust and violet-brown shadows rather than bright ochre highlights.

That shift alone, same mill, same pond, same figure, gives a genuinely different page without changing a single shape in the composition.

Family Choosing Pumpkins at a Roadside Stand

The usual mistake with a group scene is spacing every figure evenly, which looks staged rather than candid. Cluster two of the family members close together reaching for the same pumpkin, and set the third slightly apart, perhaps already carrying one back to the car.

Fix it halfway through by checking the gaps between figures: if they are all equal, nudge one closer or further before adding the pumpkin stand’s wooden crates. For a wider look at pumpkin-season color choices, the fall journal ideas here pair well with this palette.

Jogger Running Past a Row of Red Maples

Ten minutes gets the jogger’s gesture, a lean forward with one arm bent, and the nearest maple in flat rust color. That quick version already has motion and season both.

Forty minutes stretches the row of maples further down the path, each one slightly smaller and cooler in tone than the last, and adds a scatter of fallen leaves along the path edge to ground the whole scene.

Trio Roasting Chestnuts Over a Firepit

Light this entirely from the firepit itself, low and orange, which means every face turned toward it gets a warm rust glow while the backs of heads and shoulders drop into deep green-brown shadow. There is no second light source to worry about once that is decided.

Keep the flames themselves as just two or three quick upward flicks of bright ochre and white, since overworking fire is the fastest way to lose the warm glow on the figures around it.

Vintner Checking Grapevines in Late Autumn

Rows of vines are a perspective exercise in disguise. Set the eye level at the vintner’s own height and let each row of posts shrink and converge toward one point on the horizon, rather than drawing them all the same size marching sideways.

Once those converging rows are sketched, the vintner inspecting a cluster of grapes can be painted at a scale that matches the nearest row, keeping the whole vineyard believable.

Night Watchman Lighting Lanterns Along a Harvest Path

Flip the usual daylight logic here: the lanterns are now the brightest points on the page, so paint the surrounding path and trees noticeably darker than every other scene on this list, in deep green nearly to black. That contrast is what sells the idea of dusk falling.

Add each lantern’s glow as a small soft halo of warm ochre painted wet into the darker background, letting it bloom slightly rather than staying a hard-edged circle, as a final hands-on touch to close out the sketchbook page.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene, mix a small warm palette of ochre, rust and deep green, and paint it start to finish on a page of cold press watercolor paper before moving to the next idea. For more ways to build out a seasonal sketchbook, the drawing and painting basics guide is worth a look between pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gouache colors do I actually need for an autumn sketchbook?

A small palette goes a long way: a warm ochre, a burnt orange or rust, a deep green, and white for mixing and highlights. Add a touch of brown or black for shadow mixes. Four or five tubes cover every scene in this list without the page ever looking muddy.

Does gouache work in a regular sketchbook or do I need special paper?

Thin sketchbook paper will buckle and pill under wet gouache, so switch to a cold press watercolor paper pad for these pages, even if the rest of your sketchbook is plain. A sketchbook with watercolor-weight paper built in works just as well if you already own one.

How do I paint a person without it looking stiff or flat?

Sketch the pose first as a simple gesture line, a single curve showing the lean or bend of the body, before adding any limbs or clothing. Bend at least one joint, a knee, elbow or neck, since a perfectly straight figure almost always reads as stiff on the page.

How do I keep these small scenes from looking too busy or crowded?

Limit each page to one clear light source and one main action, and let background trees or buildings stay loose washes rather than detailed shapes. If every element competes for attention, the story of the scene gets lost, so decide what matters most and paint everything else simpler.

What is the fastest way to add fall color without overmixing on the palette?

Mix one warm base of ochre and rust together ahead of time, then vary it slightly for each element: a touch more white for highlights, a touch more deep green or brown for shadow. Working from one pre-mixed warm base keeps the whole page feeling unified instead of patchy.
