Train drawing is a quiet kind of travel, the kind where you get a whole journey onto one page without leaving your chair. Winter makes it even better: snow simplifies a messy background into clean white shapes, and a cherry red train carriage becomes the one loud color your eye lands on first.
Below you will find thirty one scenes that mix the outside world of viaducts, frozen lakes and platforms with the cozy inside world of sleeper bunks, tea glasses and fogged up windows. Grab your fineliner and alcohol markers, pick whichever one you are most drawn to, and build it from the first line to the last blend of color.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the viaduct, not the train: draw a gentle curve of arches first, since the whole scene balances on getting that line right before anything sits on top of it. Keep the arches simple, just repeated rounded shapes stepping across the page, and let the valley fall away steeply underneath in soft white and icy blue.
Once the viaduct is inked, add the train along its top edge as a row of simple rectangles with rounded corners, cherry red against all that pale snow. Fineliner first for every edge, then marker: blend the snow in cool grey blue shadows, keep the sky pale and almost empty.
If you want one measuring trick, hold your pen up against the page and check the viaduct is roughly a third of the way up from the bottom. That single proportion keeps the valley from swallowing the train or the train from floating above empty space.
If you have no red marker on hand, a red coloured pencil pressed hard over the fineliner reads just as strongly against snow.
Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Pine Green,Snow White
Drop the horizon of the bunk first: a simple rectangle of mattress and pillow tucked against a frosty window, since that window shape anchors everything else you draw around it. Give the girl a simple seated curve, knees up, book open, before you touch the window at all.
Light here comes from two places at once, the warm lamp inside and the cold blue glow outside the frost, so decide that early. Keep the lamp side warm yellow and soft, keep the window side icy and pale, and let the frost pattern sit as loose scribbled fineliner marks rather than careful lace.
The common mistake is making the bunk feel flat and boxy. Angle the blanket folds diagonally instead of straight across, and that small change gives the whole cushion some weight.
No lamp yellow marker handy? A warm orange laid light, almost dry, over white paper gives the same cozy glow without looking heavy.
Palette: Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
This little scene works best built from the bench outward, since the cat is small and easy to lose if you draw the whole station first. Sketch a simple wooden bench, then a round curled cat shape on one end, tail wrapped neatly around its paws.
Behind the bench, keep the station low and plain: a sloped roof, a sign post, maybe one lamp, all drawn in quick fineliner strokes. Snow gathers along every horizontal edge, so leave the paper bare on top of the bench slats and the roofline before you add any color.
Eye level sits low here, almost at bench height, which is what makes the cat feel close and the station feel like it stretches back behind her. That one choice about where your eye sits changes the whole mood from a wide view to a quiet, near one.
Today’s tip: draw the cat’s shadow as a single soft grey-blue smudge under the bench, it does more for the scene’s chill than any extra snow detail would. This pairs nicely with the quieter platform moments in the train station drawing ideas collection if you want more of this mood.
Palette: Pine Green,Soft Grey,Warm Amber,Snow White
Ten minutes gets you the bones of this one: a simple curved line of hills across the page, a single track running along the bottom, and the train as a short red rectangle cutting across it. That quick version already reads clearly as a winter travel scene.
Forty minutes gets you texture: soft rolling shadows in the hills using a light icy blue laid in uneven patches, a few bare trees as simple dark marks along the ridge, and smoke drifting from the train in loose grey curls. Build the hills first in pale blue, then add the train last so the red stays the brightest thing on the page.
Keep the sky almost empty, just a wash of the palest grey, so nothing competes with that one strong red shape.
If your red marker runs dry mid-scene, switch to a red gel pen for the final edge lines, it still reads as one solid train from a normal viewing distance.
Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
Build the table first, close up and slightly tilted, with a simple bowl of soup, a spoon, maybe a bread roll beside it. This foreground object is what makes the scene feel like you are sitting there, so give it the most careful line work of the whole drawing.
The window behind the table holds the snowy mountain, drawn smaller and simpler than the table since it is background, not the star. A pale icy blue wash for the peaks, a thin white line left bare for snow caught in sunlight, and a soft grey for the sky beyond.
It goes wrong when the table and the window compete for attention. Keep the window’s edges a little looser and lighter in color than the crisp dark outline around the bowl and spoon.
No orange for the soup on hand? A warm yellow ochre pencil layered twice gives a near identical creamy, hot look.
Palette: Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
Place the chalets first, a loose row of simple triangular roofs with small square windows, climbing the hillside in a diagonal line. That diagonal is the backbone of the whole composition, so get it drawn lightly in pencil before any ink touches the page.
The little blue train follows that same diagonal, smaller than the chalets so it reads as further along the climb. Keep its shapes simple: a few rectangles, round windows, one thin red stripe along the side as your one accent color against all that blue and white.
If this is your first time drawing a mountain village at an angle, draw every roof as the same triangle just smaller as it climbs, rather than trying to vary each one. That repetition alone makes the hillside feel believable.
Swap pine green for the chalet shutters if you want more warmth, a mid brown reads just as well against snow.
Palette: Icy Blue,Pine Green,Cherry Red,Snow White
Draw the two figures close together first, shoulders touching, one thermos cup passed between their mittened hands. Keep both coats simple blocky shapes, no fine detail on the fabric, since the warmth of the scene comes from their closeness, not from texture.
Behind them, a plain platform edge and a hint of track disappearing into pale fog does the rest of the work. Breath comes out as two small soft white puffs near their faces, left mostly as bare paper with just a thin grey edge.
This scene can go stiff if both figures face the same direction. Angle one slightly toward the other, even just a few degrees, and the whole pair reads as a real moment rather than two cut-out shapes.
If you only have cool colors on your desk, swap the thermos cup to icy blue, a cup of cocoa reads warm even in a cold palette as long as steam curls up from it.
Palette: Warm Amber,Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Snow White
Ink the tunnel mouth as a dark rounded arch first, since everything else in the scene reads in relation to how deep and dark that opening looks. Icicles hang from its top edge as simple downward triangles, varied in length but never too thin to color cleanly.
The train nose pokes out just past the arch, bright and simple, headlight as one small circle of warm yellow against all that cold stone and ice. Blend the tunnel’s shadow dark at the center and lighter near the icicles so the ice catches a little shine.
For the icicle texture trick, leave a thin unmarked line of bare paper down the center of each one before you shade either side. That single highlight line does more to sell ice than any amount of blue shading alone.
No white gel pen for the sharpest icicle tips? Scratch gently into the marker layer with a toothpick while it is still slightly wet.
You Will Need
- white gel pen
Palette: Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Cherry Red,Warm Amber
Build the window first, a wide pane showing the storm as loose white scribbles and grey streaks blowing sideways outside. That storm pattern is quick to draw but needs confident, fast fineliner strokes, so practice the motion on scrap paper before committing to the real page.
Inside, keep travelers simple: rounded wool coat shapes, a scarf here, a cup there, clustered near a small table or counter. Warm amber dominates the inside half of the scene while the window half stays cold and pale, and that contrast is really the whole point of the drawing.
If the storm ends up looking too tidy and ruins the chaos you want, go back over it once dry with a dry brush loaded with white gouache or a white gel pen, flicking it lightly across the glass.
Swap wool coats for simpler ponchos if coats feel fiddly, the rounded shape reads the same either way.
Palette: Warm Amber,Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Snow White
Fog comes first here, laid down as a soft even grey-white wash across the whole window pane before anything else touches it. Let that dry a little, then draw the heart as a simple clean outline scratched or drawn through the fog with a fine point, warm pink or red against the cool grey.
The child sits small in the corner of the frame, simple rounded shape, one hand lifted to the glass, rest of the body loosely sketched since the heart is the star of this scene. Outside the glass, the snowy landscape stays blurred and pale, just enough shape to read as hills or trees.
If this is your first time drawing fog texture, press your marker nearly dry and drag it in one direction only. Going over it twice in different directions makes it look patchy rather than soft.
No grey marker for the fog? Diluted grey watercolor over the marker paper works nearly as well if your paper can take a little water.
Palette: Soft Grey,Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Snow White
Lay the horizon low on the page, roughly a third up from the bottom, so the frozen lake and sky both get room to breathe. The track itself is just two thin converging lines running along the lake’s edge, drawn with a ruler if your hand needs the help.
Color the lake in flat icy blue with a few streaks of white left bare where the ice catches light, and keep the far shore as a simple low dark line of pine trees. A small train, far off and small, sits where the track meets the horizon, barely more than a red dash.
This scene lives or dies on that horizon placement: push it too high and the lake disappears, too low and the sky swallows everything else. Measure it once with your thumb against the page before you ink anything.
If you want the ice to feel more solid, scratch a few straight crack lines into the blue with a white gel pen once it has dried.
You Will Need
- white gel pen
Palette: Icy Blue,Pine Green,Cherry Red,Snow White
Start with the woman’s silhouette stepping forward, one leg extended as if mid stride, suitcase in one hand and a leash in the other. Keep her coat as one simple belted shape, no fussy folds, since the scene needs to read instantly even at a glance.
The dog trots just ahead of her, a small simple four legged shape with one ear up, paw prints trailing behind both of them in the fresh snow as a few short dark dashes. The train she has just left sits large and blurred behind her, mostly suggested rather than fully drawn.
Getting the proportion right between woman and dog matters more than anything else here: hold your pencil up and check the dog’s shoulder sits roughly at her knee height before you commit to ink.
If you want the paw prints trick but have no fine pen, the tip of a cotton bud dipped in grey works just as well for soft dotted prints.
Palette: Soft Grey,Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Snow White
Center the clock high in the frame first: a simple round face, bold numerals, mounted on a plain post or bracket. Drawing the clock face accurately matters more than anything else here, so use a coin or a cap to trace the perfect circle before adding hands or numbers.
Below it, the platform runs off in a gentle perspective, lines narrowing toward a vanishing point somewhere near the clock itself, which is what gives the whole scene its sense of depth. Snow piles along the platform edge in soft white mounds, left mostly as bare paper.
Once the perspective lines are right, everything else, benches, lamp posts, a distant train, can sit smaller as they move toward that vanishing point and the drawing holds together on its own.
No coin on hand to trace a circle? A roll of tape or a marker cap usually gives you a close enough size for a clock face this small.
You Will Need
- a plate or coin to trace the clock face
Palette: Soft Grey,Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Snow White
Build this one around the small table between two bunks, two glasses of tea with metal holders sitting on it, blankets folded neatly nearby. That table is the heart of the scene, so give it the sharpest fineliner lines and the most saturated amber for the tea itself.
Behind the table, the bunks and window stay simpler and softer, just enough shape to say sleeper car without pulling focus. A sliver of icy blue night or snowy dusk through the window tells the viewer where the train is headed.
If the folded blankets look flat, add two or three curved fold lines rather than straight creases, curves read as soft fabric far better than straight edges do.
If amber feels too orange for your tea glasses, a warm brown-red mix gives a deeper, more traditional look.
Palette: Warm Amber,Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Snow White
Sketch the fjord’s steep cliffs first, tall and narrow, snow caught in horizontal streaks along every ledge. These cliffs dominate the page, so leave the train small and let it run along a thin ledge near the bottom, barely more than a bright dash against all that dark rock and white snow.
Water in the fjord stays a deep cool blue, almost black in places, which gives the strongest contrast against the snow streaked cliffs above it. Work top to bottom: cliffs first, water next, train last so it stays crisp on top of everything.
Light here usually comes from low in the sky, which means the snow streaks catch bright on one side of each ledge and stay shadowed on the other. Decide which side is lit before you shade a single cliff, and keep that consistent the whole way down.
If dark blue water feels intimidating, Payne’s grey blended wet gives nearly the same deep, cold result.
Palette: Pine Green,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey,Cherry Red
For more snowy peak practice beyond this one scene, the mountain painting ideas list covers plenty of alpine light and cliff texture.
Draw the bridge first as a simple arched or trussed structure, painted the same cherry red as the train so the two read as one continuous shape crossing the page. Keep the ironwork loose, just a few diagonal lines suggesting a truss rather than every rivet.
The frozen river beneath sits flat and pale, broken by a few thin dark cracks running across the ice in random directions. Snow banks along both shores stay simple white mounds with just a touch of grey shadow underneath to ground them.
Matching the bridge and train in the exact same red is the trick that makes this whole composition feel deliberate rather than accidental. Mix or choose that red once and use it for both without any variation.
If you do not have a second red marker, go over the bridge with a red colored pencil on top of the same marker you used for the train, it unifies them even if the tones differ slightly.
Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
Place the conductor close to the train door, one arm raised mid wave, long dark coat falling in simple straight folds to the knee. His cap and coat buttons are the only small details worth adding, everything else about his shape can stay broad and confident.
Behind him, the train itself only needs to show as much as one or two carriage windows and a sliver of red, since he is the focus here, not the engine. Snow falls lightly around him as a scatter of small white dots left bare on the paper or flicked on with a toothbrush.
If his wave looks stiff, bend the raised arm at the elbow rather than drawing it straight, a bent arm always reads as more alive and mid motion than a rigid one.
No toothbrush for the snow flick? A stiff old paintbrush loaded thin with white paint and tapped over a ruler gives the same scatter.
You Will Need
- an old toothbrush for snow splatter
Palette: Soft Grey,Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Snow White
Keep every shape here deliberately small and toy-like: short rounded carriages, a stubby little engine, tracks that curve tightly between the trees rather than running straight. That compact scale is what gives the whole scene its charming, miniature feel.
Pine trees crowd close on both sides, drawn as simple layered triangles dusted with white along their top edges, taller and darker than the train itself to really sell the sense of a train winding through a big forest. Work the trees first, then slot the little train into the gap you have left between them.
If the trees start looking repetitive, vary their height and the angle of their lean slightly from one to the next. Perfectly identical trees are what makes a forest look like a sticker sheet instead of a real scene.
Swap pine green for a darker spruce blue-green if your green feels too bright against all that white snow.
Palette: Pine Green,Cherry Red,Snow White,Soft Grey
Draw the rack itself as a simple metal frame first, a few horizontal bars running overhead, since everything else leans or hangs from that structure. Skis lean diagonally against or through it, poles crossed, backpacks slouched below with straps dangling loose.
Keep the color palette tight here, mostly soft grey and warm amber for the gear with maybe one icy blue backpack for contrast, since this is a quiet still life moment rather than a wide landscape. Light comes from a window just out of frame, so shade one side of every object a touch darker than the other.
If the leaning skis look like they might slide, ground them with a small dark shadow shape right where they meet the floor or rack. That one shadow convinces the eye they are resting, not falling.
No grey marker for the metal rack? A cool blue-grey colored pencil over fineliner gives a similar metallic read.
Palette: Soft Grey,Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Pine Green
Build the seat and lap first: knitting needles crossed over a half finished scarf, hands loosely sketched, wool bundled beside it in a simple round shape. This close foreground detail is what makes the scene feel personal rather than just scenic.
The window beside it shows the landscape rushing past, which you can suggest with horizontal motion streaks in icy blue and white rather than drawing a detailed scene. A few blurred dark shapes for trees or poles are enough to sell speed.
If this is your first time drawing knitting, two simple crossed lines for the needles and a zigzag texture for the scarf is plenty, nobody needs to count stitches at this scale.
No streaky marker technique yet? Drag a nearly dry marker fast across the paper in one motion, the dry edges create the blur naturally.
Palette: Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
Center the wood stove in the composition, a simple rounded iron shape with a small glowing orange window and a thin pipe rising up. The sleeping dog curls right in front of it, a round simple shape with tucked paws, since the whole mood of this scene is about that warm pocket of heat.
Behind them, wooden benches and a frosted window keep the rest of the room plain and quiet, nothing competing for attention with the stove’s glow. Warm amber radiates outward from the stove in soft overlapping circles, fading into cooler greys at the edges of the room.
If the glow looks too hard-edged, go back with a dry blending marker or a cotton bud dipped in a lighter color and soften just the outer rim of that orange circle.
No orange marker for the stove window? A small scrap of warm yellow colored paper collaged in works in a pinch, though marker over marker is simpler.
Palette: Warm Amber,Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Pine Green
Place the farmhouse first, small and simple, off to one side of the page rather than centered, since the train needs the rest of the space to feel like it is truly passing through. A steep roof, one chimney with a thin curl of smoke, and a few bare trees nearby are enough.
The train runs in a long horizontal line across the lower third of the page, red and simple, smoke or steam trailing behind it in soft grey curls. Snow covers both the farmhouse roof and the fields in flat unbroken white, left mostly as bare paper with just a touch of blue shadow on one side of every shape.
Balancing a small house against a long train is really about spacing: leave more empty snowy field between them than feels natural at first, it reads as distance once it is finished.
If you want a quick variation later, move the farmhouse to the other side and flip the train’s direction, the same scene feels brand new.
Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
Draw the crossing barrier first, a simple diagonal striped bar lowered across the road, since that single shape tells the whole story of waiting before you add anything else. The girl sits astride her bike just behind it, one foot down, breath showing faintly in the cold air.
Keep the bike simple: two circles for wheels, a few straight lines for the frame, nothing more detailed than that at this scale. The train itself can stay mostly suggested, just a red blur rushing past in the gap beyond the barrier, more motion than detail.
If the bike wheels look lopsided, trace a coin or a cap for both circles so they match exactly, that small consistency matters more than any other line in the drawing.
No striped pattern feels right for the barrier freehand? A ruler and alternating red and white blocks gives a cleaner, more convincing crossing bar.
You Will Need
- a coin or cap to trace the bike wheels
Palette: Cherry Red,Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Snow White
Sketch the lake’s curve first, a wide pale blue shape filling most of the lower half of the page, since the train’s track has to follow that same curve exactly or the whole scene feels off balance. Snowy peaks rise behind the far shore, layered lightest furthest back, darkest closest to the lake.
The train hugs the near shore in a long curving line, small against the scale of the mountains and water around it. Reflections in the lake are worth the extra few minutes: a loose vertical smear of the same colors as the peaks above, softened and slightly blurred.
Getting the curve of the track to match the curve of the lake is the one proportion check worth making before you ink: lay tracing paper or just your eye over both lines and confirm they run parallel the whole way.
If reflections feel tricky, skip them entirely and leave the lake flat, it still reads clearly as water against all that snow.
Palette: Icy Blue,Pine Green,Cherry Red,Soft Grey
Build the carriage frame first, wide and curved, with the glass roof sketched as a few long sweeping arcs rather than a grid of tiny panes, since too much detail here just slows you down for little payoff. Passengers sit below in simple rounded shapes, faces tilted upward or toward the windows.
Mountains fill the view beyond the glass, tall and pale, with just a hint of icy blue shadow to give them shape. Keep the inside of the carriage warmer in tone than the cold peaks outside, that contrast is what sells the comfort of watching winter from somewhere warm.
If the curved glass roof looks stiff, draw it freehand in one continuous sweep rather than building it from straight segments, a slightly imperfect curve reads as more natural glass than a mechanically perfect one.
No amber marker for the warm interior light? A pale yellow highlighter under your line work gives a similar soft glow.
Palette: Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Snow White
This is the quietest scene on the list, so give it room: a single simple wooden bench, slightly off center, one suitcase sitting alone on the seat or beside it in the snow. Nothing else needs to compete with that one small detail.
Snow gathers thick along the top of the bench and the suitcase’s edges, left mostly as bare paper with a thin grey line marking where snow meets wood or leather. A few footprints leading up to the bench, then stopping, suggest someone just walked away.
If the suitcase looks too flat, give it one strap and one simple metal buckle, that tiny bit of hardware detail is enough to make it read as a real object rather than a box.
No grey for the snow shadow line? A very light blue pencil pressed softly gives nearly the same quiet cold effect.
Palette: Soft Grey,Warm Amber,Icy Blue,Snow White
Place the reindeer herd first, a loose scatter of simple four legged shapes running in roughly the same direction, varied in size so some feel closer and some further back. Keep antlers minimal, just a few simple forked lines, since too much detail on that many animals slows the whole drawing down.
The train runs parallel to them along the bottom edge of the page, red and fast looking, with a few speed lines trailing behind to match the herd’s motion. Tundra beneath both stretches flat and pale, almost featureless except for a few patches of exposed dark ground showing through thin snow.
If drawing a whole herd feels like too much, five or six animals clustered together reads just as convincingly as twenty scattered across the page, and finishes far faster.
No red marker for speed lines on the train itself? A dry brush dragged lightly in grey along the train’s edge gives the same sense of motion.
Palette: Cherry Red,Soft Grey,Snow White,Icy Blue
The reindeer drawing ideas list is worth a look if you want more practice with herd poses and antler shapes before tackling this one.
Draw the mother and child from behind, close together, one small hand raised pointing at the approaching train. Keeping them turned away from the viewer puts all the attention on what they are looking at, which is exactly where you want it.
The train pulling in fills most of the upper half of the page, snow piled thick along its roofline, headlight glowing warm against the cold platform. Steam or snow kicked up around its wheels can be loose white scribbles, left mostly unshaded.
If the figures look stiff from behind, give the child a slight forward lean, heels barely lifted, as if about to run toward the train. That tiny shift in weight makes the whole pose feel alive.
No warm yellow for the headlight? A small dab of white gel pen surrounded by a soft amber marker halo reads just as bright.
You Will Need
- white gel pen
Palette: Warm Amber,Soft Grey,Cherry Red,Snow White
Steam is the star here, so build it first as big soft overlapping clouds trailing back over the train, white at the edges and shaded soft grey toward the center. Keep every cloud shape rounded and slightly irregular rather than perfectly symmetrical.
The train itself sits smaller than the steam, dark and simple, maybe one small cherry red detail on the front for contrast against all that white and grey. Woods on either side are simple dark pine shapes, snow dusted along their tops, giving the steam somewhere dark to stand out against.
Next time you draw this one, try it from a lower angle looking almost straight down the track toward the oncoming train, the steam clouds will stack up dramatically overhead instead of trailing sideways.
If grey marker makes the steam look heavy, leave more of it as bare white paper and use grey only in the very center shadows.
Palette: Soft Grey,Cherry Red,Pine Green,Snow White
Draw the kiosk as a simple small wooden structure first, a counter, a striped awning, a stack of newspapers and a row of cups lined along the front edge. Keep every object on that counter small and simple, since there are a lot of them and detail quickly turns to clutter at this scale.
Snow sits along the top of the awning and the kiosk roof in a thick unbroken white line, while steam rises from a couple of the cups in thin soft curls. A customer or two can stand nearby in simple winter coat shapes if you want a bit of life in the scene, or leave it empty for a quieter still life feel.
If the stack of newspapers looks messy, draw it as one solid rectangle first and only add a few individual fold lines on top, rather than drawing each paper separately from scratch.
No striped marker technique for the awning? Alternate plain red and white blocks with a ruler, the regularity reads as stripes even without a blended edge.
Palette: Cherry Red,Warm Amber,Soft Grey,Snow White
Work from a high eye level on this one: you are looking down past the girl’s shoulder at the tracks below, which changes how every line in the scene behaves compared to a normal eye level view. Draw the bridge railing first, close and large in the foreground, since it frames everything beneath it.
The girl leans on that railing, simple rounded coat shape, looking down rather than out, which keeps the viewer’s eye following hers toward the tracks. Below, the tracks run small and converge toward a distant point, snow piled between the rails in thin white strips.
That steep downward angle is what makes this scene feel different from every other platform view on this list, so commit to it fully rather than softening the perspective halfway through.
If drawing train tracks in sharp perspective feels tricky, lightly rule a few straight guide lines converging to one point before inking, then erase them once the final lines are down. For more scenes built around this kind of travel viewpoint, the travel sketchbook ideas list has a good range to try next.
Palette: Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Warm Amber,Snow White
What to Do Next
Pick whichever scene pulled you in first, outline it lightly in pencil, then commit to it in fineliner before the color goes on. Start on a smaller sheet if a full page feels like a lot today, one finished small scene beats a half finished big one every time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What markers work best for a train drawing in winter scenes?
Alcohol-based markers work best because they blend smoothly wet into wet, which keeps snow soft and trains clean. Choose a limited palette of icy blue, soft grey, warm amber and one cherry red for consistent results across a series.
Do I need to draw the train engine accurately?
No, these scenes focus on travel and mood rather than technical engine detail. Simple rectangles and rounded shapes for carriages read perfectly well as a train once color and snow context are added around them.
How do I make snow look realistic with markers?
Leave the white paper bare for the brightest snow and only shade the shadowed sides in icy blue or soft grey. A toothbrush flick or white gel pen adds falling snow texture on top once the base scene is dry.
What paper should I use for alcohol marker train scenes?
Use smooth, marker-specific paper with some weight, since it resists bleed and lets colors blend without feathering through to the back. Regular printer paper will buckle and the ink will bleed past your fineliner lines.
How long does one of these train drawings take to finish?
Most of these scenes finish in thirty to forty five minutes once you include outlining and full marker blending. Simpler ideas like a single suitcase on a bench can be done in under fifteen minutes.
