29 Snow Leopard Drawing Ideas and Other Mountain Animals on Snowy Peaks

7

Snow leopard drawing gives you one of the most satisfying animals to paint in gouache: big soft paws, a tail almost as long as the body, and fur that turns into flat rosette shapes under a loaded brush. The rock and snow around it are just as fun, since gouache lays down clean matte shapes fast, without the fuss of blending a hundred greys.

Below are 29 ideas, starting with snow leopards doing something small and specific, then moving up the mountain to yaks, ibex, pikas, marmots and the birds that share their peaks. Each one fits a single sitting, with a palette and a plan so you can pick a scene and get straight to painting.

Start the cub as two overlapping ovals, one for the body low to the ground and one smaller for the head tipped forward, with the back legs already coiled to spring. Block in the mother’s tail first as one long sweeping curve across the lower half of the page, since everything else gets placed around it.

Paint the tail in pale cream with slate grey rosettes, letting the brush shape each spot rather than outlining it afterward. The cub goes in next, a touch lighter in value so it reads as young, with the paws and ears picked out last in white gouache.

Proportion is where cubs go wrong fastest: keep the head about a third the size of the body, since a bigger head reads as a toy rather than a young cat. If the pounce looks flat, raise the front paws slightly off the ground so the cub looks mid-leap rather than standing still.

Today’s tip: paint the tail as one continuous shape before you add a single spot, so the curve stays graceful instead of getting chopped up by detail too early.

Snow leopard drawing gets a quiet drama here: the cat balances along a thin rock ledge with a soft bank of clouds filling the space below. Lay in the cloud bank first as one flat pale shape across the lower third of the page, since the leopard and ledge sit on top of it.

Paint the ledge as a narrow diagonal wedge in slate grey, then place the leopard’s body following that same angle so its spine echoes the rock line. Work the rosettes on after the base coat of fur dries, keeping them smaller near the legs and tail where the body narrows.

Eye level matters most in this one: set your horizon low, near the bottom of the page, so the ledge and leopard feel high up and the clouds stretch wide beneath them. A low horizon is what sells the height, more than any shading on the rock itself.

No slate grey on hand: mix a touch of black into white gouache with a hint of blue for a close cold grey.

Palette: Slate Grey,Cloud White,Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown

Curl the body into a loose comma shape first, since a sleeping cat is really one soft curve with a head tucked at one end. The tail wraps up and over the face last, so leave space for it before you commit to the head’s exact position.

Base coat the whole body in a warm pale grey, then paint the tail as a separate lighter shape laid over the top of the face, since it should read as resting on the fur rather than merging into it. Rosettes go on once both base shapes are dry, following the curve of the spine so they bend with the body instead of sitting flat.

The easy mistake here is making the tail too thin: snow leopard tails are thick and full, nearly as wide as a back leg, so paint it generously or the whole pose stops looking cozy. If you want a faster version, skip the background entirely and let the cream paper stand in for snow.

Try this today: paint the closed eyes as two short curved lines rather than dots, which does more to suggest deep sleep than any other single mark.

Palette: Warm Grey,Snow White,Slate Grey,Soft Chocolate

This one asks for two bodies working as a single shape, so sketch the mother first in a low walking stance, then add the cub hanging from her jaw with its own body curved slightly inward, like it is going along for the ride. The scruff grip sits right behind the cub’s head, a small detail worth getting right since it reads the whole story.

Paint the mother’s legs mid-stride, one set forward and one back, which does more than anything else to sell movement through snow. Keep the snow underfoot as a few loose white strokes rather than a solid white field, so her paws look like they are sinking in rather than floating on top.

Edges matter most here: soften the bottom edge of her paws into the snow with a slightly damp brush so they look buried, while keeping the top edges of both animals crisp. That contrast between soft below and sharp above is what makes gouache snow scenes look convincing.

One tip for today: paint the cub a shade lighter than the mother everywhere, not just the head, since a uniform value difference reads as young at a glance.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Snow White,Pale Cream,Icy Blue

Block in both boulders first as solid grey shapes with a gap between them, since the leopard’s leap only works if the distance it is crossing is clear before the cat goes in. Stretch the body long and low across that gap, front legs reaching and back legs still trailing off the first boulder.

Paint the boulders with flat tops and a little snow capping each one in white, then work the leopard’s fur over the gap last so it reads as suspended mid-air. Keep the tail streaming out behind at an angle that continues the line of the leap, rather than curling, which would stop the motion dead.

For a quick ten-minute version, paint just the leap and skip detailed rock texture, letting two flat grey shapes carry the scene. Given forty minutes, add cast shadows under each boulder and a scatter of snow dust kicked up from the launch point.

Give the front paws slightly spread toes today, since tucked paws can make a leaping cat look stiff instead of airborne.

Palette: Slate Grey,Snow White,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue

Give each cub a different pose so the tumble reads as motion rather than two identical cats side by side: one rolling onto its back with paws in the air, the other mid-somersault with its tail flung wide. Sketch both as loose rounded shapes first, overlapping slightly where they collide.

Paint the slope as a diagonal band of white and pale blue shadow running from one corner to the other, then place both cubs along that same diagonal so gravity feels right. Rosettes go on last, smaller and fewer than on an adult, since cub markings are usually softer and less defined.

If the two cubs start to look like one blob, pull them slightly apart and give one a lighter value than the other, which separates them instantly without extra outline work. No deep blue on hand for the shadow: a touch of grey mixed into white does nearly the same job.

Try varying this scene next time with three cubs instead of two, staggered at different points down the same slope for a sense of a longer tumble.

Palette: Snow White,Icy Blue,Pale Cream,Slate Grey

Give the flags the first pass of color, since they set the only bright accent in an otherwise cool scene: paint five or six small rectangles strung along a thin line, each a different flat color, fluttering in one consistent direction. The leopard sits below and to one side, watching rather than moving, body settled into a calm seated shape.

Work the mountain pass behind as a few soft overlapping grey ridges, kept simple so the flags stay the clear focal point. Paint the leopard’s fur last, using the same cool palette as the rock so the flags read as the one warm note in the whole piece.

Light direction decides how this reads: if the sun comes from behind the flags, paint their far edges slightly darker so they look lit from one side, which adds real depth for very little extra work. A flat front-lit flag looks like a sticker instead of fabric in wind.

One tip for today: let the string sag slightly between the flags rather than drawing it perfectly straight, since a little slack makes the whole line feel real.

Palette: Slate Grey,Sage Green,Chocolate Brown,Snow White

Add one small red or yellow flag among the cooler ones; a single warm flag against all that grey and blue is what makes the whole scene pop on a page full of neutrals.

Build the stretch from the spine out: draw one long arched line for the back first, then hang the front legs down and forward and the back legs down and back from either end of that arch. This is the pose where getting the proportion of the stretch right matters most, so compare the length of the back to the length of one front leg before you commit to paint, since the back should run roughly twice as long.

Paint the rock in warm chocolate brown with a few patches of white snow still clinging in the shaded corners, then lay the leopard’s fur over it in a lighter cream to show the sun hitting from above. Rosettes follow the stretch, elongating slightly along the back where the fur pulls taut.

If the stretch looks stiff, round off the paws and let the claws show slightly extended, which adds the small detail that convinces the eye of real tension in the pose.

Try this today: paint one ear slightly flattened back, a small gesture that gives the whole stretch a sense of real comfort rather than a posed stance.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Pale Cream,Snow White,Slate Grey

This composition works almost entirely through what you leave out, so start with a solid ridge line running across the lower half of the page and let most of the leopard disappear behind it. Only the top of the head shows: two ears, a brow, and a pair of pale eyes looking straight out.

Paint the ridge first in flat slate grey with a thin white edge of snow along the top, then add the small visible slice of leopard last, keeping it tight and compact since there is so little of the animal to work with. Make the eyes slightly larger and paler than life, since they carry the whole expression here.

The usual mistake is making too much of the animal visible, which turns a sneaky reveal into an ordinary portrait: keep the head low, mostly hidden, with maybe one paw hooked over the rock edge if you want a little more.

One tip for today: angle the ears very slightly forward and alert, which does more than the eyes alone to make the leopard look like it is watching something out of frame.

Palette: Slate Grey,Snow White,Pale Cream,Icy Blue

Walk the leopard across the page in profile, which is the easiest angle for showing a clear stride, then build the powder snow around the legs as soft uneven mounds rather than a flat white strip. The paw prints behind matter as much as the animal: paint four or five round prints trailing off behind, each slightly smaller as they recede into the distance.

Dry brushing earns its keep here: once the white snow base is down and dry, drag a nearly dry brush loaded with a little more white across the surface to add texture without flattening the color underneath. That same dry brush, used lightly in pale blue, can suggest the soft shadow inside each paw print.

If the prints look too neat and stamped, vary their size and spacing slightly, since real tracks are never perfectly even. For a material swap, a small stiff-bristled brush works in place of a dedicated dry brush for this texture.

Try this today: tilt the back paw print slightly off the line of the front ones, which mimics how a cat’s hind feet land a touch to the side.

Palette: Snow White,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey,Pale Cream

Curl the cub into a tight seated shape, then bring the tail forward and up so the tip reaches the mouth, a small loop that gives the whole pose its charm. Keep the body round and soft since this is a young, playful moment rather than a dignified portrait.

Paint the body first in warm pale grey, then the tail as it travels from the base around to the mouth, slightly lighter where it catches the light near the tip. The mouth itself needs only a tiny gap and one small tooth hint, since too much detail here turns playful into odd.

Getting the proportion of a cub right is the real challenge: keep the paws and head slightly oversized compared to the body, the way a young animal actually looks, rather than a shrunk-down adult. That slight exaggeration is what reads as “cub” rather than “small leopard.”

One tip for today: paint one ear slightly askew rather than perfectly symmetrical, which adds to the sense of a cub caught mid-fidget.

Palette: Warm Grey,Pale Cream,Snow White,Chocolate Brown

Settle the leopard into a relaxed lying pose on a flat cliff ledge, body facing slightly away from the viewer so the long tail can curl around in front. Paint the cliff and leopard first and let them both dry fully before adding a single fleck of falling snow, since wet white dots on wet paint just bleed into mush.

Once everything is dry, flick small dots of white gouache across the whole scene with a nearly dry brush, keeping them a little denser near the top of the page and sparser lower down, which mimics how falling snow reads against depth. A toothbrush loaded with thinned white and pulled back with a thumb gives an even finer scatter if you want more flakes with less control.

The common slip is making every snowflake the same size, which flattens the illusion: vary the dot sizes a little and the scene reads as weather rather than decoration.

One tip for today: leave a few flakes resting visibly on the leopard’s back and head, since snow caught on fur does more than falling snow alone to sell the gentle, cold quiet of the scene.

Place the stream first as a winding pale blue ribbon cutting across the lower page, with a few jagged white ice shapes along its edges. The leopard lowers its head to drink, so the neck stretches down and slightly forward, a pose that changes the whole silhouette from the usual upright stance.

Paint the water with a flat mid blue base, then add a few short horizontal white strokes for the ripple where the leopard’s reflection would break the surface, without trying to paint a literal mirror image. The leopard’s body goes in last, its head and neck the lowest point in the whole composition.

Edges do the real work in this scene: keep the ice shapes along the stream hard and crisp, almost geometric, while the water itself stays soft and slightly blended, since that contrast is what separates frozen from flowing.

One tip for today: angle the leopard’s ears forward and slightly flattened, a small cue that reads as caution while drinking out in the open.

Palette: Icy Blue,Snow White,Slate Grey,Chocolate Brown

This is the idea to reach for when you want color to carry the whole piece, so paint the sky first, a soft gradient from pale pink at the horizon up into dusty lavender, before the leopard goes in at all. Lying flat along a ledge in silhouette-leaning profile, the cat becomes almost a dark shape against that warm light.

Where the sun sits changes everything here: keep it low, just off one edge of the page, and let the rock and leopard both pick up a thin rim of warm pink light along whichever side faces it, while the shadowed side stays cool slate grey. That single warm edge against a cool body is the trick that makes alpenglow read convincingly in flat gouache.

If the sky and the leopard start competing for attention, darken the leopard’s body slightly more than feels natural, pushing it toward silhouette so the sunset stays the star.

Try this today: paint the rock ledge beneath the leopard a notch warmer than you would in daylight, since reflected sunset color should touch the stone too, not just the sky.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Lavender Grey,Slate Grey,Chocolate Brown

Fit three shapes into one resting group: the mother lying largest at the center, one cub curled against her side, and a second cub flopped slightly apart, each at a different angle so the group reads as relaxed rather than lined up. Sketch all three loosely before committing color to any one of them, checking that the group sits comfortably inside the dark curve of the cave mouth.

Paint the cave as a large flat dark shape first, since it frames everything and needs to read clearly before the lighter animals go on top of it. The three leopards come next, the mother painted with slightly stronger rosette contrast than the cubs, who stay softer and paler.

Keeping three animals from blurring into one shape is the real test here: stagger their heights slightly and leave a sliver of visible gap or differing fur tone between each body, so the viewer’s eye can separate all three at a glance.

One tip for today: let a little snow dust the cave’s outer lip, which anchors the whole scene back into winter without adding any extra animals or detail.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Chocolate Brown,Snow White,Pale Cream

Snow leopards share these slopes with other animals built for the cold, and the yak is the easiest place to start since its shape is mostly one big shaggy mass. Block in a wide rounded body first, short sturdy legs beneath, and a lower-set head with two curved horns, then let the shaggy fur hang well past the actual body outline in long ragged strokes.

Paint the base coat in deep chocolate brown, then once dry, add a few thin white vertical lines near the belly and legs for icicles, each one slightly uneven in length. The shagginess itself comes from varying your brush pressure along the edge of the body rather than drawing a clean outline, so some strokes are thick and some taper to nothing.

If the yak starts looking too smooth, go back in with a drier brush and pull a few more ragged strokes outward from the silhouette, breaking up any edge that reads too neat.

One tip for today: keep the horns a pale cream rather than white, since pure white horns next to white icicles will compete and blur together.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Snow White,Pale Cream,Slate Grey

Place the mother yak’s bulk first, standing solid and broad, then tuck the calf’s smaller body right against her side, legs angled slightly into the wind to show the two leaning on each other. The calf’s head should rest close to the mother’s flank, since that contact is the whole point of the pose.

Paint the mother in the same deep chocolate brown as a full-grown yak, then the calf a shade lighter and with shorter, less shaggy fur, since young yaks have not grown their full coat yet. Wind gets suggested through a few swept lines in the fur along one side of both animals, all leaning the same direction.

Comparing their sizes before you paint saves this scene: the calf’s shoulder height should sit at roughly the mother’s belly line, not her knee, or the pairing reads as an adult and a much younger animal than a calf actually is.

One tip for today: angle both animals’ heads slightly down and away from the wind, a small shared gesture that makes the pair feel like a true unit rather than two separate figures.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Pale Cream,Slate Grey,Snow White

Those long curved horns are the whole character of an ibex, so draw them first, sweeping back in a strong ridged arc from the head, before placing the rest of the body around them. Set the legs at an angle that suggests a steep incline, two planted higher on the rock and two lower, rather than all four on one flat line.

Paint the body in warm tan and chocolate brown, keeping the belly slightly paler, then add the horns last in a darker grey-brown with a few short curved lines along their length to suggest the natural ridges. The rock face beneath should slope diagonally across the page, since a level rock under an ibex undercuts the whole point of the pose.

If the stance looks wrong, check that the two uphill legs are genuinely shorter in the picture than the two downhill legs, a simple length comparison that keeps the animal looking like it is actually clinging to a slope rather than standing on flat ground.

One tip for today: let one hoof overhang the rock edge slightly, which does more than anything else to sell the exposure of the climb.

Palette: Tan,Chocolate Brown,Slate Grey,Snow White

Mirror two ibex facing each other, heads lowered and horns nearly touching at the center of the page, with back legs braced wide for the impact. Sketch both animals as near mirror images first, then vary the angle of each slightly so they do not look like a perfect stamped reflection.

Paint both bodies in the same tan and brown palette, but let one catch a touch more light on its back to separate the two figures visually. The horns meeting at the center become the focal point, so keep that small patch of contact crisp and clear while the rest of each animal can stay a little looser.

Getting the collision to feel real depends on the front legs: brace both animals’ front legs stiff and slightly forward, almost locked, since relaxed front legs make the whole clash look staged rather than mid-impact.

Try this today: kick up a small puff of white snow dust right where the horns meet, a quick flick of a dry brush that adds real energy to the moment of contact.

Palette: Tan,Chocolate Brown,Snow White,Slate Grey

Keep the pika small and round, since its whole charm is being compact: one oval for the body, a smaller rounded head with no visible tail, and short stubby legs tucked beneath. The rock pile it peeks from should be built as a few overlapping grey stone shapes stacked loosely, with one gap for the pika to poke through.

Paint the rocks first in flat slate grey and chocolate brown, then the pika’s warm sandy fur on top, keeping the body mostly hidden behind the stones so only the head and front half show. The mouthful of dry grass goes in last as a few thin golden-tan strokes fanning out from the mouth, overlapping the stone edge slightly.

If the grass blades look stiff, vary their lengths and let a couple cross over each other rather than lining them up evenly, which reads as a real gathered bundle rather than a tidy bouquet.

One tip for today: give the pika large round ears and bright small eyes, since those two features carry most of its appeal in such a small creature.

Palette: Sandy Tan,Slate Grey,Golden Tan,Chocolate Brown

Sit the pika upright on a single flat stone this time, body a little more exposed than the rock pile version, since there is no gap to hide behind here. Paint the stone first with a patch of muted sage green moss along one edge, which gives the whole piece its one green accent against all the cooler colors around it.

Build the pika’s fur over the stone once it dries, keeping the pose alert, head slightly turned as if it just noticed the first flakes. A few scattered white dots added last, once everything else is dry, suggest the very start of snowfall without needing a heavy scatter.

The quick ten-minute version skips the moss and snowflakes entirely, just the pika on a plain grey stone. Given forty minutes, add both the moss patch and a light scatter of falling snow, plus a soft cast shadow beneath the stone to settle it onto the ground.

One tip for today: keep the snowflakes sparse at this early stage of the fall, just four or five dots, since too many turns “beginning to snow” into a full blizzard.

Palette: Sandy Tan,Sage Green,Slate Grey,Snow White

Give the marmot a sturdy upright stance, back legs planted and front paws held close to the chest, with the body noticeably rounder and heavier than the pika’s. The burrow entrance sits just behind and below, a simple dark oval dug into a mound of earth and patchy snow.

Paint the mound first in warm chocolate brown with a dusting of white snow caught in the hollows, then the dark burrow opening, then the marmot standing beside it in rich golden brown. Keep the belly a touch paler than the back, which is true of most marmots and adds a believable bit of shading without extra work.

Comparing the marmot’s height to the burrow mound keeps this scene in proportion: the standing marmot should reach about the same height as the mound itself, not tower over it, since marmots are stocky and low rather than tall.

One tip for today: paint the front paws held slightly loose rather than clenched, since a marmot on alert still looks relaxed through the arms even while it watches for danger.

Palette: Golden Brown,Chocolate Brown,Snow White,Pale Cream

This is the one interior scene in the set, so build a simple dark rounded burrow chamber first, just a soft curved cave shape with no outside snow visible at all. Curl the two marmots together inside it, bodies overlapping into one combined rounded mass rather than two separate animals lying apart.

Paint the burrow walls in deep warm brown, almost black in the corners, then the two marmots in golden brown on top, close enough that their fur blends at the point of contact. Keep both animals’ eyes closed and bodies loose, since the whole point of this scene is stillness and warmth against the cold outside.

If the two marmots start to look like one shapeless lump, give each a slightly different curl direction, one nose tucked toward the tail and the other tucked toward its own belly, so the eye can still trace two distinct animals.

Try this today: leave the burrow’s edges soft and dark rather than crisp, the one scene in the set where a gentler, less defined edge actually suits the mood better than the usual crisp gouache line.

Palette: Deep Brown,Golden Brown,Chocolate Brown,Pale Cream

Stand the goat squarely at the very top of a snowy peak, body solid white against a pale blue sky, with the beard hanging distinctly from the chin as its own separate shape rather than blending into the chest fur. The horns are short and black, a sharp contrast against all that white that is worth getting crisp.

Paint the whole body in snow white first, then come back once dry with thin slate grey shading along the legs and belly to keep the goat from vanishing into a flat sky, since pure white on pale blue needs that edge definition to read clearly. The beard gets painted slightly looser and longer than the body fur, with a few separate tufted strokes rather than one solid clump.

If the goat disappears against the sky, darken the sky slightly behind it or add a thin dark outline along just the goat’s silhouette, enough to separate the two whites without losing the clean look.

One tip for today: place the goat right at the highest point of the rock rather than partway up, since the summit itself is the whole subject of this scene.

Palette: Snow White,Icy Blue,Slate Grey,Payne’s Grey

Give the kid a lighter, bouncier pose than the adult goat: all four legs gathered beneath the body mid-jump, head up, clearing a gap between two smaller rocks. Paint the two rocks first, spaced with a visible gap, since the jump only reads if that distance is unmistakable before the goat goes in.

Base the kid’s fur in a slightly creamier white than a full adult’s, since young mountain goats often look a touch softer and less bright, then shade the legs with the same thin slate grey line used on the adult for consistency across the pair if you paint both scenes.

The quick version here takes ten minutes: just the leap and the two rocks, nothing else. With forty minutes, add a wider mountain backdrop behind, a scattering of snow kicked up from the launch rock, and a soft shadow on the landing rock to show where the kid is about to touch down.

One tip for today: angle the ears back and the tail slightly up, two small cues that read as pure energy in a young animal mid-leap.

Palette: Pale Cream,Slate Grey,Snow White,Chocolate Brown

Paint the cliff face first as a large flat grey shape filling most of the page, with snow caught along its ledges, since the bird needs a dramatic backdrop to glide against. Keep the chough small by comparison, wings spread wide and slightly curved, gliding along one side of the cliff rather than centered in the scene.

Base the bird’s body in near-black, the one dark shape against all that pale rock and sky, then pick out the legs and that distinctive curved beak in bright red-orange, the single warm color in the whole piece. Wings get painted as two confident sweeping shapes rather than individual feathers, which keeps the gliding motion clean and readable.

Comparing the bird’s wingspan to the height of the cliff behind it keeps the scale honest: the chough should look genuinely small against that much rock, often less than a tenth of the cliff’s height, which is what gives the scene its real sense of scale.

One tip for today: angle the beak slightly open, a small gesture that suggests the bird is calling out mid-flight.

Palette: Near Black,Red Orange,Slate Grey,Snow White

Scatter four or five blue sheep across a sloped hillside, each at a slightly different angle and height so the herd reads as naturally grouped rather than lined up in a row. Sketch the slope itself first as a simple diagonal band, pale with frost, then place the sheep along it at staggered points.

Paint each sheep in the same muted blue-grey base, since that softly blued coat is where the species gets its name, then vary the heads slightly, some grazing down and some lifted and watching. Keep the horns simple curved strokes in a darker grey-brown, present on most of the herd but not needing heavy detail at this distance.

If the herd starts to look repetitive, change the spacing between animals rather than their poses, clustering two close together and leaving one further off to the side, which does more for a natural feel than varying every single pose.

One tip for today: paint the two or three sheep furthest from the viewer slightly smaller and paler, a simple bit of distance that spreads the herd convincingly across the slope. You will find a similar approach to grouping animals across a scene useful if you explore the koala painting ideas on this site.

Palette: Blue Grey,Chocolate Brown,Snow White,Pale Cream

The takin is a stocky, almost ox-like animal, so build it wide and heavy through the shoulders, with a distinctive humped back and a face that slopes down to a large muzzle, resting low on folded legs. Place it among a few tall bamboo stalks painted in sage green, their leaves catching small patches of snow.

Paint the body first in a golden tan deepening to chocolate brown along the legs and face, then the bamboo stalks on top in flat sage green strokes, overlapping the takin’s outline slightly so it feels settled into the grove rather than placed in front of it. A light scatter of white snow on the upper leaves and the takin’s back ties the whole scene together.

If the bamboo starts to swamp the animal, reduce it to three or four stalks rather than a dense grove, keeping the takin the clear largest shape on the page.

One tip for today: let a little golden tan from the takin’s coat echo faintly in one or two of the bamboo stalks, a small color link that pulls the whole scene together.

Palette: Golden Tan,Chocolate Brown,Sage Green,Snow White

Close the set the way a mountain view often closes, looking down: perch the eagle high on a jagged rock spire at the very top of the page, wings folded, looking out over a wide snowy valley that drops away below. Paint the valley first as a simple layered landscape, pale blue-white distance fading up into closer slate grey ridges, since that recession is what makes the eagle’s perch feel genuinely high.

The eagle itself goes on last, body in rich dark brown with the characteristic golden wash across the back of the neck that gives the bird its name, picked out in a warm gold over the darker base. Keep the pose solid and still, talons gripping the rock, head turned slightly to survey the view rather than looking straight at the viewer.

Once this composition works, try varying it next time with the eagle mid-flight over the same valley instead of perched, or swap the golden eagle for the chough from earlier in this list, gliding through the same wide view at a smaller scale.

One tip for today: keep the valley’s colors paler and cooler than the eagle’s warm browns, since that temperature contrast is what keeps the bird as the clear subject against all that open space.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea from near the top of this list if gouache and snow leopard fur are both new to you, since the simpler poses build confidence fast. Start on a small sheet of cold press paper, block in the biggest shapes first, and let the rosettes and snow detail come last, once the fur underneath has had time to dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gouache colors do I need for a snow leopard painting?

A basic snow leopard palette needs white, a cool slate grey, a warm chocolate brown and a pale cream for the fur, plus icy blue for snow shadow. These five colors mix into nearly every shade this list uses, so a small starter set is enough.

How do I paint realistic snow leopard rosettes without making a mess?

Paint the rosettes once the base fur coat is fully dry, using a small round brush loaded with just enough paint to make one confident shape per spot. Touching up wet spots over wet fur is what causes the muddy look beginners run into most often.

Is gouache or watercolor better for snow and mountain scenes?

Gouache suits this subject better because its matte, opaque finish lets you paint light snow over dark rock without waiting to plan around the white of the paper. Watercolor works too, but needs masking fluid to protect snowy highlights in advance.

What paper works best for flat gouache shapes like these?

A smooth or lightly textured cold press watercolor paper gives the cleanest edges for this flat, graphic style. Rougher paper breaks up crisp edges more than this look wants, so save heavy texture paper for looser, blended work.

How do I keep a snowy mountain scene from looking too empty?

Fill the page with one dominant animal shape and let the rock, snow or sky fill the rest in just two or three flat color bands. A little texture from dry brushing or a light snow splatter adds interest without needing extra objects.
