Highland cow art gives you the best of both worlds: a face so shaggy and charming it practically paints itself, and a snowy farm setting that lets you play with soft pinks, icy blues and warm barn reds. Every idea below keeps that fringe, those horns and a little winter mood, so you never run out of reasons to mix another batch of frosty white.
Work through this list in any order you like, from a simple cow face with snow on its fringe to a full herd crossing a glen. Each one fits on a small canvas, uses flat blocks of color instead of fussy detail, and can be finished in a single sitting.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest highland cow art idea on this list: a cow face filling the canvas, with a mound of snow sitting right on top of its fringe. Block in the head shape first with a big flat brush in chocolate brown and rust orange, leaving the horns as pale negative shapes you paint in afterward.
Build the fringe in short overlapping strokes rather than one smooth patch, angling your brush sideways so each stroke leaves a ragged edge. Add the snow last, in titanium white with a touch of frosty sage in the shadow side, sitting on top of the fringe like a cap rather than blending into it.
The most common slip here is painting the snow too flat, so it reads as a white stripe instead of a soft pile. Fix it by adding one shadow line under the snow’s edge in pale blue grey before you call it done.
If you only have one brush size, use the edge of a flat brush for both the fur strokes and the snow texture; it keeps the whole piece consistent.

Move from a plain cow face to something with a story: a highland calf wearing a cherry red knit hat in the snow. Sketch the calf’s head and shoulders first in a lighter rust than the adult cow, since calves read younger with a warmer, more orange coat.
Paint the body and fringe before the hat, so you can fit the hat shape neatly between the ears once you know exactly where they sit. Use a small round brush for the hat’s ribbing, just a few short vertical lines in a darker red, and leave a tiny pom-pom circle of white gel pen or thick white paint on top.
Calves can end up looking too adult if the proportions are off. Keep the eyes large, set low on a short rounded face, and the ears small, and the calf feeling stays right even with simple shapes.
If cherry red paint runs out, a red colored pencil layered over dry acrylic gives the hat the same punch of color.
Palette: Cherry Red,Light Rust,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown
Give your cow a job to do with a highland cow munching hay outside a red wooden barn. Block the barn in first as a simple flat triangle-topped rectangle in barn red, keeping its lines straight with painter’s tape if your hand is not steady.
Paint the cow next, angled so its head dips toward a small pile of golden hay at the bottom edge of the canvas. Use a dry brush loaded with a little yellow ochre to scratch in a few hay strands rather than painting a smooth blob, which keeps the texture loose and believable.
The barn can easily swallow the cow if you paint it too large or too detailed. Keep the barn simple and flat, with maybe one window, so the cow stays the star of the piece.
No red paint on hand? Mix cherry red with a touch of brown for a convincing barn red instead of buying a new tube.
Palette: Barn Red,Yellow Ochre,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White
After painting a single cow, try fitting two heads into one frame: a calf peeking through its mother’s long fringe on a frosty morning. Paint the mother’s head and fringe first, large and filling most of the canvas, with the fringe hanging long and loose over where her eyes would be.
Leave a gap in the fringe strokes, then tuck the calf’s smaller face into that gap, slightly lower and to one side so it reads as peeking rather than floating beside her. A light dusting of frost, small white dots flicked from a dry brush, ties the two heads together as one cold morning scene.
Eye level matters here: keep both pairs of eyes close to the same horizontal band so the calf looks nestled in rather than hovering above its mother. If the calf’s face gets lost in all that brown fur, outline its edge faintly in white before adding final details.
Short on a fine brush for the frost dots? The tip of a toothpick dipped in white paint works just as well.
You Will Need
- toothpick or fine brush for frost dots
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange,Titanium White,Icy Blue
Build on painting two heads with a fuller composition: two highland cows standing nose to nose in a snowy field. Sketch both heads as mirrored shapes first, angled slightly toward each other with noses almost touching at the canvas center, which keeps the whole piece balanced.
Paint the cow further from the viewer slightly smaller and a touch cooler in tone, using more sage grey mixed into the brown, since objects further away naturally look paler and smaller in a simple scene like this. Work the closer cow in warmer rust and chocolate to pull it forward.
Symmetry can make this stack look stiff and posed. Loosen it by giving the two cows slightly different horn angles and fringe lengths, so they feel like two individuals meeting rather than a mirrored stamp.
If you are short on canvas width, turn the piece into a long rectangle instead of a square; it suits two heads side by side better than a tall format does.
Palette: Rust Orange,Chocolate Brown,Frosty Sage,Titanium White
Try a highland cow looking over a frosted wooden gate next, a composition that lets you practice painting a simple foreground object in front of your subject. Block the gate in first as a few horizontal and diagonal planks in weathered grey brown, painted flat across the lower third of the canvas.
Paint the cow’s head behind and above the gate line, so its chin and front legs disappear below the top rail. Add frost to the gate with a dry brush dragged lightly over the wood grain, letting flecks of white catch only the raised edges of each plank.
If the gate ends up competing with the cow for attention, simplify it further: fewer planks, flatter color, and no knots or grain detail beyond the frost. The cow’s face should stay the most detailed thing in the piece.
A stiff card edge scraped through wet white paint makes a quick frost texture if you do not own a dry stipple brush.
Palette: Weathered Grey,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Icy Blue
Add a little atmosphere with a highland cow breathing out a puff of steam on a cold morning. Paint the cow’s head as usual, then leave the area just in front of its nose and mouth empty until the very last step, since the steam needs to sit on top of everything else.
Mix a very thin, almost transparent white and load a soft dry brush lightly, then dab and swirl it in a loose cloud shape drifting up and slightly sideways from the nostrils. Keep the edges soft and uneven rather than a hard-edged blob, since real breath never has a clean outline.
Painting the steam too solid is the easiest way to ruin this effect. Thin your white paint with a little water or glazing medium so some canvas color shows through, giving it a believable haze.
No glazing medium around? A few drops of water mixed straight into the paint on your palette does the same softening job.
You Will Need
- glazing medium or water for thinning white paint
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange,Titanium White,Pale Pink Sky
Shift the mood with a quieter scene: a highland calf curled up asleep in a pile of straw in the barn. Paint the straw first, a loose golden mound built from short diagonal dry-brush strokes in yellow ochre and a touch of white, so it reads as soft and piled rather than flat.
Nestle the calf’s curled body into the straw next, tucking its legs under and its head down against its side, a pose that reads instantly as sleep even in simple shapes. Keep the calf’s outline soft where it meets the straw, letting a few strokes of straw color overlap onto its lower edge.
New painters sometimes paint the calf and straw as two separate flat shapes that never quite connect. Blend the join with a few straw-colored strokes dragged right over the calf’s lower body to settle it into the pile.
If yellow ochre looks too bright for barn straw, mute it with a touch of its opposite, a little purple or brown, straight on the palette.
Palette: Yellow Ochre,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Rust Orange
Take the detail work up a notch with a highland cow with tiny icicles hanging from its horns. Paint the horns first in a pale cream grey, curving out and slightly down the way highland horns naturally grow, then let them dry fully before adding ice.
Mix a near-white with the faintest touch of icy blue, and using the very tip of a small round brush, pull short tapering lines straight down from the underside of each horn. Vary their length so they look like they formed naturally, not like evenly spaced beads.
Icicles painted with even pressure at top and bottom look like sausages instead of ice. Press harder at the top of each stroke and lift the brush as you pull down, which naturally tapers the line to a fine point.
If your round brush is too thick for fine lines, the edge of an old credit card dipped lightly in paint can drag a surprisingly crisp icicle line too.
You Will Need
- fine round brush for icicle lines
Palette: Cream Grey,Icy Blue,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown
Scale up to a small herd of highland cows walking through a snowy glen. Plan the composition before you paint by lightly sketching three or four simple oval body shapes in a loose diagonal line, overlapping slightly so the herd reads as a group rather than scattered individuals.
Paint the furthest cows first in a cooler, paler brown so they recede, then work forward with warmer rust tones on the closest one, which should also be the largest and most detailed. Keep the glen itself simple, just rolling white hills and a pale sky, so the herd stays the clear focus.
Too much even detail across every cow flattens the sense of distance. Simplify the far cows to almost silhouette shapes, saving fringe texture and horn detail only for the one or two nearest the viewer.
For a quicker version, three cows instead of four still reads as a herd and saves real painting time without losing the feel of the scene.
Palette: Rust Orange,Frosty Sage,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown
Bring in a bit of Scottish symbolism with a highland cow standing among frosted thistles. Paint the cow first, centered and filling most of the canvas, then build a loose cluster of thistle stems at its feet using thin upward strokes in sage green and a muted purple for the thistle heads.
Frost each thistle with tiny white dots flicked from a nearly dry brush, concentrating them on the tops and edges where frost would naturally settle first. Keep the thistles smaller near the cow’s legs and let one or two taller stems break the canvas edge for a more natural, less staged feel.
Thistles painted too neat and evenly spaced look like a pattern rather than a wild patch. Vary the height and angle of each stem, and overlap a couple of them, to keep the cluster looking like it grew there on its own.
A fine liner brush gives the cleanest thistle stems if your round brush keeps splaying out.
Palette: Muted Purple,Frosty Sage,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White
Give your calf a small bit of mischief with a highland calf licking snow off a fence post. Paint the fence post first as a simple vertical cylinder shape, capped with a rounded mound of white snow, standing a little off center so the calf has room beside it.
Angle the calf’s head and neck toward the post with its tongue reaching the snow cap, a pose that reads clearly even with a very simple curved tongue shape in soft pink. Keep the calf’s body loose and rust colored, saving your most careful brushwork for the head and that stretched neck line.
A tongue that is too long or too straight can look odd rather than playful. Curve it gently and keep it short, just touching the snow, so the gesture reads as a quick lick rather than an exaggerated stretch.
If pink feels too bright against the rust fur, a dusty coral mixed from pink and brown blends in more naturally.
Palette: Rust Orange,Dusty Coral,Titanium White,Weathered Grey
Dress your subject up with a highland cow with a knitted scarf wrapped around its neck. Paint the head and shoulders first, then wrap the scarf shape around the lower neck in two or three overlapping bands, following the curve of the neck rather than painting it flat and straight.
Add simple ribbing lines with a fine brush in a darker shade of the scarf color, just short diagonal marks rather than a fully knitted pattern, and let one end of the scarf hang loose over the front for a bit of movement. Cherry red keeps this feeling cozy against all that brown fur.
A scarf painted as one flat band can look pasted on rather than wrapped. Vary its width slightly as it curves around the neck, wider where it drapes forward and narrower where it wraps behind, to suggest real fabric and folds.
If you want a quicker version, skip the ribbing lines entirely and keep the scarf as a flat color block. It still reads clearly as a scarf and saves several minutes of fine brushwork.
Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange,Titanium White
For more cozy winter farm scenes and other Scottish countryside subjects worth painting, the highland cow painting ideas list has plenty more to try next.
Add some real personality with a highland cow sticking out its tongue to catch a snowflake. Tilt the whole head upward and back slightly from your usual front-on angle, which immediately gives the pose energy and makes clear the cow is looking at falling snow.
Paint the tongue as a simple curved pink shape reaching up past the lower lip, then scatter a handful of individual white snowflake dots around the head, with one positioned right above the tongue tip as the target. Vary the dot sizes so the snowfall feels natural rather than uniform.
A head tilted only slightly back can end up looking confused rather than playful. Commit to the angle, tipping the muzzle well up and the eyes slightly closed or squinted, so the joy of the moment reads clearly.
In a hurry, five or six snowflake dots are plenty. Resist adding dozens, since a few well-placed flakes read better than a cluttered flurry.
Palette: Dusty Coral,Rust Orange,Titanium White,Icy Blue
Keep your calf cozy with a highland calf in a tiny wool blanket coat in the paddock. Paint the calf’s body first, then fit a simple rectangular coat shape over its back and sides, strapped loosely under the belly with one or two painted buckle marks for detail.
A plaid or checked pattern on the coat gives real farmhouse charm: once the base color is dry, add a grid of thin crossed lines in a contrasting shade, spaced generously so the pattern stays simple rather than fussy. Frosty sage or icy blue plaid reads especially well against a rust colored calf.
Coats painted with hard straight edges can look stiff rather than fabric-like. Let the coat’s bottom edge follow a gentle curve that matches the calf’s belly line, and add a small fold or two where the fabric would naturally bunch at the shoulder.
If a plaid grid feels fiddly, two or three solid stripes across the coat give almost the same charm with far less brushwork.
Palette: Frosty Sage,Rust Orange,Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown
Widen the scene with a highland cow beside a stone farmhouse with smoke from the chimney. Paint the farmhouse first as a simple flat gable shape in warm grey stone color, with one small window and a thin grey chimney rising from the roofline.
Add the smoke next, a soft curling line of pale grey white drifting up and sideways from the chimney top, painted with the same loose dry-brush technique used for breath steam elsewhere on this list. Place the cow in the foreground, large enough that it clearly stays the main subject rather than the building.
A farmhouse painted in too much architectural detail pulls focus from the cow. Keep the stone texture to a few dabbed marks rather than individually painted stones, and leave the window as one flat dark rectangle.
If you enjoy this kind of cozy farm backdrop, the farm junk journal pages are full of similar red barns and grazing scenes for more inspiration.
Palette: Stone Grey,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Pale Pink Sky
Try a resting pose next with a highland cow lying in fresh snow with its legs tucked in. Block the body as a large rounded oval sitting low on the canvas, with no visible legs at all since they fold completely underneath, which keeps this pose simple to paint and very calm in feeling.
Build a shallow dip of snow around the cow’s lower body where its weight has pressed in, a slightly darker blue grey shadow hugging the base of the shape. Paint the fringe and face last, keeping the eyes soft and half-closed for a restful mood.
Without visible legs, this pose can read as flat or melted if the body outline is too smooth. Break the silhouette with a few longer fur strokes along the back and shoulder to keep the shaggy texture even while resting.
For speed, skip the pressed-snow shadow entirely and just place the cow on plain white: it still reads clearly as lying down.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange,Titanium White,Icy Blue
Return to a feeding scene with a highland cow pulling hay from a round bale capped with snow. Paint the bale first as a large flat circle in golden straw color, textured with short curved dry-brush strokes that follow its roll, then cap the top with a simple white snow mound.
Position the cow’s head pressed into the side of the bale, mouth slightly open and a few loose hay strands pulled free and scattered at its feet. This small detail of falling hay does more to suggest motion and effort than any change to the cow’s pose.
A perfectly round, smooth bale can look more like a boulder than hay. Keep the curved texture strokes visible across its whole surface, even under the snow cap, so the rolled hay reads clearly.
If straw colored paint looks too flat on its own, a light wash of burnt sienna over the dry base adds warmth and depth in seconds.
Palette: Yellow Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown
Paint a bit of warmth between friends with two highland calves leaning against each other in a snowy pasture. Sketch both bodies first as overlapping ovals, one leaning its weight gently into the other’s shoulder, with heads turned slightly toward each other for a sense of closeness.
Vary their coloring a little, one warmer rust and one slightly more golden, so they read as two individuals rather than a copy and paste. Keep the line where their bodies overlap soft, blending the fur strokes across the join so neither calf looks like it is floating in front of the other.
Two identical poses side by side can look stiff rather than affectionate. Give one calf its head tilted down and the other looking slightly up or outward, which naturally suggests a real moment between them.
If two full bodies feels like a lot to paint today, crop the composition to just their heads and shoulders leaning together, which carries the same feeling with half the canvas work.
Palette: Rust Orange,Golden Tan,Titanium White,Frosty Sage
Open the view up with a highland cow at the edge of a frozen loch under a pale blue sky. Paint the loch first as a flat pale blue grey band across the lower half of the canvas, with a thin lighter line along its surface to suggest ice catching the light.
Place the cow standing at the loch’s near edge, its reflection painted as a softer, more muted echo of its own colors directly below it on the ice. Keep the reflection simpler and flatter than the cow itself, with no fringe texture, just the basic color shapes.
A reflection painted too crisp and detailed competes with the real cow for attention. Blur its edges slightly and mute its colors further than feels natural, which reads correctly as ice rather than a mirror.
For a quicker version, skip the reflection altogether and simply show the cow beside a plain frozen loch; it still reads as a complete winter scene.
Palette: Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange,Pale Pink Sky
Add a small funny detail with a highland cow with a little robin perched on its horn. Paint the cow’s head and horns first and let them dry fully, since the robin needs a clean, settled surface to sit on top of without smudging into the horn color.
Keep the robin tiny and simple, just a round red breasted body shape, a small dark head and tail, perched right where the horn curves upward. Its scale matters more than any other detail: too large and it looks unreal, too small and it disappears, so aim for roughly the size of the cow’s eye.
Painting the robin with too much detail can make it look stuck on rather than part of the scene. Keep it as flat, simple shapes that match the smooth color blocks used everywhere else in the piece, and it blends right in.
A fine liner brush or even a toothpick works well for the robin’s thin legs and beak, which are easy to overdo with a bigger brush.
You Will Need
- fine liner brush for small details
Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange,Titanium White
Frame your cow differently with a highland cow peeking out of a hay barn door during a snowfall. Paint the barn’s dark doorway first as a large flat rectangle or arch shape taking up most of the canvas, in a deep warm brown that reads clearly as shadowed interior.
Place the cow’s head emerging from that dark shape, lit a touch brighter than it would be if standing fully outdoors, since the contrast against the dark doorway does most of the work of showing it stepping out. Scatter a light snowfall of dots across the open sky visible beside the barn.
If the doorway and cow end up the same value, the whole piece reads flat with no sense of inside versus outside. Keep the doorway noticeably darker than the cow’s fur, even where they meet, so the depth stays clear.
In place of a painted arch, a simple straight-edged rectangle doorway is just as effective and quicker to mask off with tape first.
You Will Need
- painter’s tape for straight doorway edges
Palette: Deep Brown,Rust Orange,Titanium White,Icy Blue
Bring in some movement with a highland calf jumping playfully in its very first snow. Sketch the calf’s body mid leap, back legs kicked out behind and front legs tucked up, a pose that instantly reads as joyful motion even in a simple flat style.
Paint a scatter of kicked-up snow beneath its back legs, small irregular white puffs rather than neat dots, to sell the sense of a real jump disturbing the ground. Angle the whole body slightly off the vertical, since a perfectly upright leaping pose tends to look stiff rather than bouncy.
Legs that are too evenly spaced or symmetrical kill the energy of a jump. Stagger them, one front leg higher than the other, one back leg more bent, so the whole pose feels like a single captured moment rather than a posed stance.
If a full jumping pose feels ambitious today, a calf with just its front legs lifted off the ground still reads as playful and is considerably easier to get right.
Palette: Rust Orange,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue
Return to a calmer composition with a highland cow with a snow-dusted fringe in front of rolling white hills. Paint the background first this time, a few overlapping curved hill shapes in varying pale tones of white, sage and the faintest blue, layered back to front so the furthest hill is palest.
Once that dries, paint the cow large in the foreground, its fringe dusted with the same light dry-brush white dot technique used in the icicle and frost ideas earlier on this list. This repetition of the frost texture is worth practicing, since it is one of the most useful small tricks in this whole winter palette.
Hills painted with hard edges flatten the sense of rolling distance. Soften each hill’s top edge slightly where it meets the sky, blending just a touch rather than leaving a crisp line, which reads as atmosphere rather than a cut paper shape.
For variation next time, try this same layout with the cow facing away toward the hills instead of toward the viewer, which shifts the whole mood toward quiet distance.
Palette: Frosty Sage,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown,Rust Orange
Pair your cow with water again, differently this time, with a highland cow drinking from a steaming water trough. Paint the trough first as a simple flat rectangular basin in weathered grey wood, with a flat dark water shape inside it rather than any reflective detail.
Lower the cow’s head down toward the trough’s surface, muzzle just touching the water, then add thin wisps of steam rising from the water using the same soft dry-brush technique from the breath steam idea earlier. The steam here can be a touch larger and more drifting, since it is rising off standing water rather than a single breath.
A head lowered too far or too straight down can look awkward rather than natural. Keep a gentle curve through the neck as it dips, matching how a real cow lowers its head to drink, and the pose settles immediately.
If you want extra atmosphere, a faint blue grey wash across the whole lower third of the canvas suggests cold morning air without any extra brushwork beyond what you already planned.
Palette: Weathered Grey,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Icy Blue
Bring the mother and calf relationship into a full landscape with a highland mother and calf sheltering under a bare oak in light snow. Paint the oak first, a simple dark trunk with a handful of bare branching arms reaching out rather than a full leafy canopy, since bare branches suit the winter mood and are far quicker to paint.
Place the two cows close together beneath the widest spread of branches, the calf tucked slightly behind and under the mother’s shoulder for a clear sense of shelter. A light scatter of falling snow dots across the whole scene, slightly heavier in the open areas and sparser directly under the branches, sells the idea of partial cover.
Branches drawn too symmetrically can look more like a drawn diagram than a real tree. Let a few branches cross or taper unevenly, and keep the trunk slightly off center, for a far more natural silhouette.
If a full tree feels like too much today, just the lowest branch arching over both cows is enough to suggest shelter without painting the whole oak.
Palette: Deep Brown,Rust Orange,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White
A quick refresher on basic shapes, proportion and composition from the art fundamentals guide helps if tree branches or animal poses feel tricky to plan out.
Close the list on something purely cheerful: a highland cow wearing a pom-pom beanie between its horns. Paint the head and horns first as usual, then fit a simple rounded beanie shape snugly between them, following the curve of the head rather than sitting straight on top.
Add a folded brim line near the base of the beanie with one slightly darker curved stroke, then finish with a round pom-pom in white or a contrasting color perched right at the peak. Cherry red or icy blue both work nicely against the rust and brown fur used throughout this whole list.
A beanie that looks too small or too neatly centered between the horns can read as an afterthought rather than a genuine detail. Let it sit a little lopsided, nestled against one horn more than the other, which looks far more natural and more fun.
For a next version, try the same beanie on a calf instead of an adult cow, scaled down and tilted, for an equally charming but slightly different result.
Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Icy Blue
What to Do Next
Pick one idea that matches the mood you are in today, grab a small canvas and block in the biggest shapes first: the head, the horns, the snow or barn behind it. The fine details like steam, icicles or a knitted scarf always go on last, once the main shapes are dry and settled.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paint colors work best for highland cow art?
Rust orange, chocolate brown, frosty sage and icy blue cover most of a highland cow scene, with cherry red reserved for small cozy accents like a hat or scarf. These mix easily from a basic acrylic set without needing specialty tubes.
How do you paint shaggy highland cow fur in acrylic?
Load a flat brush lightly and drag short overlapping strokes in varying lengths rather than one smooth layer of color. Angling the brush sideways and letting edges stay ragged reads as shaggy fur far better than careful blending.
What size canvas suits a beginner highland cow painting?
A small canvas around eight by ten inches works well, since it keeps the cow’s face large and simple without demanding fine detail. Smaller formats also finish faster, which suits a single sitting.
Do I need to draw the cow before painting it?
A light pencil sketch of the head, horns and fringe outline helps keep proportions correct before paint goes down. Keep the sketch loose and simple, since the flat color blocks in this style do not need heavy underdrawing.
How do you make a highland cow painting look less flat?
Add one shadow tone under the chin, horns or snow for a sense of light direction, and vary brushstroke length in the fringe instead of one even texture. These two small changes add depth without extra detail work.
