Alice in wonderland junk journal ideas give you a whole storybook to build from, not just one character on a page. This kit has 23 scene pages that move through the book from the rabbit hole to the final trial, 5 seamless background patterns, and 5 lined writing pages for your own notes in the margins of Wonderland.
Print the set on heavyweight matte paper, somewhere between 24lb and 32lb, so the ink does not bleed through when you glue pages back to back. Set your printer to its best or photo quality for the engraving lines, then trim each sheet to the journal size you are working with before you start gluing anything in.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Down the Rabbit Hole
Alice leans after the waistcoated rabbit as he checks his pocket watch and bolts for the hedge, with buttercups, a garden gate and a low hill painted behind them both.
Pair this one with the playing card and pocket watch pattern further on in the set: glue a strip of the pattern page along the bottom edge so Alice seems to be falling straight into it.
The shaft around her is painted with cupboards, shelves and a hanging lamp drifting past, the kind of odd furnished tunnel only Wonderland would have. Leave a little blank sky at the top of the page if you plan to add a journaling strip there later.
A round hall lined with locked doors surrounds Alice as she kneels by a glass table, the tiny door barely knee high and a golden key glinting on the table above her.
The usual mistake with a still life page like this is leaving it too empty: fill the glass table with the cake labeled Eat Me, a fan, a pair of gloves and the curling label on the bottle itself, all painted against the round hall behind it.
Hall of Doors and Growing Pains
An arm out the window and a foot up the chimney, Alice fills the whole cottage after growing too fast, with pebbles turning to cakes tumbling past the broken window frame.
Give this page a five minute version: skip any extra writing and just glue it in as a quiet spread between two busier scenes, letting the mouse and the swimming mice carry the page on their own.
Alice treads water in her own enormous tears, with a startled mouse paddling nearby and a scattering of small creatures swimming toward a distant shore painted at the edge of the pool.
A damp crowd of birds and animals races in a ragged circle on the shore, feathers still wet, with the Dodo presiding over the finish and a line of dripping footprints behind them.
Garden and Grove Encounters
Smoke curls from a long pipe as the Caterpillar sits cross legged on his mushroom, three smaller mushrooms and a cluster of drooping leaves arranged around the base below him.
Write a short entry here about something that changed your own size that day, in feeling if not in fact, since the page is simply a quiet question written beside a changing Alice.
Perched along a gnarled branch with his stripes fading into the bark, the Cheshire Cat grins down over a forest clearing while his tail curls loosely around a lower bough.
Alice stands puzzling at a crooked wooden signpost pointing in three directions at once, deep in a quiet wood where moss and fallen leaves cover the ground around her feet.
Tear the edge of this page roughly before gluing it in, as though smoke from the pepper has curled it, then let the cook’s enormous pot sit at the center of the chaos.
The Duchess rocks a howling baby too hard while the cook stirs a pot of pepper soup, with a grinning cat crouched by the hearth and pans hanging crooked on the wall behind them.
The Tea Party Table
Place this scene across from the pocket watch pattern page so the clutter of cups on the table echoes the scattered watches in the pattern beside it.
The Hatter, the March Hare and the dozing Dormouse crowd one end of a very long table, teapots and mismatched cups spread the length of it with a stopped clock hanging over the scene.
The sleepy Dormouse is wedged halfway into a large teapot at the edge of the tea table, with crumbs, a butter dish and a half eaten slice of bread painted around the spout.
A common mistake is making this page too similar to the full tea party scene already in this set: keep it tight and close, just the Hare’s hand, the pocket watch and a single teapot.
Butter is smeared thick over the gears of the watch while wine pours in beside it, a single teapot and a half folded napkin filling the corner of the small table.
Glue a scrap of ribbon or a pressed flower onto this page: the White Rabbit stands reading a scrolled invitation aloud, his spectacles perched low, with a garden gate and rose bushes painted behind him.
The fussy baby from the Duchess’s kitchen has become a small pink pig trotting off into the wood, with Alice watching from a clearing and ferns painted thick along the path.
The Queen’s Garden
This spread pairs naturally with the playing card pattern later in the set: use the pattern as a border strip along the bottom of this page before gluing it into the journal.
The Queen of Hearts swings a flamingo like a mallet over a curled up hedgehog ball, with soldiers bent double as arches and rose bushes clipped square behind the whole game.
Three card gardeners crouch at a rose bush with brushes and a pot of red paint, working quickly before the Queen arrives, with a garden path and trimmed hedges painted around them.
Keep the five minute version in mind for a page like this one: glue it in plain, without extra decoration, and let the Queen’s pointing finger and the trembling court do the work on their own.
The Queen points furiously toward a trembling group of card courtiers while the King leans in to whisper something calming, rose bushes and garden statuary painted in the background.
Seated on a rock by the sea, the weeping Mock Turtle tells his story to the Gryphon while Alice listens close by, waves and a distant shoreline painted beyond the rocks.
Who is this page for in a gift journal: it suits a reader who loves dance and silliness equally, since the whole scene is a line of sea creatures mid step.
A row of lobsters, fish and turtles link claws and fins along the shore, caught mid step in their dance, with the sea and a rising moon painted behind the line of dancers.
The Knave stands accused before the King and Queen as the White Rabbit reads the charge from a scroll, a jury box of small animals painted along one side of the courtroom.
Background Papers
End the scene pages here with a question for the entry: what did you want to go back to, the moment the ordinary world returned, after your own strange afternoon.
Alice stirs beneath the same tree where she first sat down, leaves drifting loose from the branches above and her sister’s book still open on the grass beside her.
Scattered hearts, clubs, spades and small pocket watches repeat evenly across the sheet. Use it under a photograph of your own tea table, as a pocket lining, or as the journal’s inside cover in the dusty rose and ink blue of this set.
Narrow stripes in sage green and cream alternate down the page, broken now and then by a tiny embroidered waistcoat button. Good under a cut out photo, inside a journal cover, or as a divider between the Wonderland sections of your book.
Small teacups, teapots and spoons repeat in loose rows across the aged cream paper. Set it behind a tea party photo, line a pocket with it, or trim it down for the journal’s title page in the faded rose and blue palette.
A trellis of small red and white roses climbs in repeating diagonal rows, echoing the Queen’s garden. Use it as a cover wrap, a pocket lining, or a backdrop behind a pressed flower kept from your own garden.
Lined Writing Pages
Small mushrooms and drifting butterflies scatter loosely across the page in the Caterpillar’s grove palette. Place it under a nature photo, as a pocket lining, or behind a pressed leaf tucked into the journal.
A narrow border of tumbling keys and clock faces runs down one side of the page. Use the ruled lines for a list of everything Alice wondered about that day, a packing list for your own curious errand, or the first line of a story.
Small teacups and spoons fill each corner of the sheet. Write a tea menu for your own gathering, a guest list for a mad little party of your own, or a letter to next year’s self about something you want to slow down for.
A thin frame of red roses and playing card corners runs around the edge of the sheet. Use it for a gift list, a note to a friend who loves this story, or a few lines about the garden you would plant if you were Queen for a day.
A narrow band of small grinning cat faces runs down the left side of the sheet. Write a riddle of your own, a short list of questions with no answers, or a line about something that disappeared slowly from your week.
What to Do Next
Print the set, trim the sheets to your journal’s size, and start with the rabbit hole pages so the story runs in order from the first spread to the last. Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for these Alice in Wonderland pages?
Choose a heavyweight matte paper between 24lb and 32lb. It holds the fine engraving lines and the faded watercolor tint without curling or letting ink show through when you glue pages back to back in the journal.
What printer settings bring out the engraving detail?
Set your printer to its best or photo quality setting and choose matte or plain paper in the print dialog, not glossy photo paper. This keeps the cross-hatching crisp and stops the color from pooling or smearing on the page.
What size should I print the pages at?
Standard letter or A4 works for most junk journals and lets you trim down to the size you need. Print at full page, no scaling, then trim after printing so every scene and pattern lines up evenly along the journal’s spine.
Can I add my own color or writing on top of these pages?
Yes. The watercolor tint is left soft on purpose so colored pencils, watercolor pencils or a fine pen sit well on top. The lined pages are made for pen and ink, while the scene pages can take a light wash if you want more color.
How do I glue these into a handmade journal without wrinkling them?
Use a thin, even layer of glue stick rather than wet glue, working from the center of the page outward to the edges. Press each sheet flat under a heavy book for a few minutes while the glue sets to keep the paper smooth.
