Table of Contents
This forest diorama set gathers nineteen little woodland rooms tucked inside stumps, logs, nests and hollow trees, each one a tiny stage for a grown-up heroine foraging, reading or baking while deer, owls and streams carry on in the woods behind her. Print the sheets, cut around the object, and glue the whole scene onto a card front or into a junk journal spread for a friend, a daughter or a grandchild who loves the woods as much as you do.
Print on matte cardstock at actual size, and leave a thin white edge around each cut so the shape stays crisp against kraft or cream card bases.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Homes In The Trunk
Steam rises from a little kettle over a fire built right into the hollow of an old stump, where a young woman in an apron brews tea while a badger naps curled against the warm stones.
This one suits a card for a friend who loves a quiet evening indoors, and the ferns growing up behind the stump give the whole scene a deep, settled green to sit against kraft card.
An elderly woman in a shawl sits shelling hazelnuts on the wide curved porch of a giant mushroom cap, a squirrel perched beside her bowl waiting its turn, with pale birches standing behind.
Curled inside a fallen log, a young woman reads by lantern light while a deer pauses to drink at a nearby stream, the whole scene glowing soft and amber through the tunnel opening.
Try pairing it with another quiet reading scene from this set for a matching pair of cards, one lit by lantern and one by candle, both perfect for a grandmother who loves a good book.
Sweeping fallen needles from her doorstep with a small twig broom, an elderly woman tends her pinecone cottage while tall pines rise straight and dark behind her.
Treetop And Water Rooms
High in the branches, a young woman curls inside a nest-shaped room watching owlets through a small pair of binoculars, a misty valley spreading out far behind the treetops.
This card suits a granddaughter who loves bird watching or nature walks, and the soft grey valley mist behind gives you a gentle background to colour by hand if you like adding extra shading.
An elderly couple stack split firewood by the door of their small forest hut while a worn woodland path winds away behind them into the trees.
Drawing water up in a wooden bucket from a mossy stone well, a young woman pauses in the soft light while bluebell woods spread out in a blue haze behind her.
Settled inside a beech tree hollow, an elderly woman paints toadstools in her sketchbook while a babbling brook runs along behind the tree, catching soft light through the leaves.
Give this one a foam dot lift for a mat card, and consider pairing it with the stone well scene for a matching set built around flowing water in the background.
Caretakers Of The Wood
Feeding a doe and her fawn at the open door of a small ranger cabin, a young woman kneels with a handful of feed while a waterfall tumbles softly in the distance behind.
Sorting blackberries and bilberries into wooden bowls, an elderly woman works at a little table while a wide forest clearing opens up behind her in dappled light.
Lighting candles inside a tiny chapel carved from a tree trunk, a young woman stands in quiet prayer while sunbeams slant down through the tall pines behind her.
This scene suits a sympathy or get well card for someone who finds comfort in quiet places, and works well on a plain cream card base with a thin strip of lace along the bottom edge.
Knitting beside a tiny hearth with an owl perched close by, an elderly woman settles into her moss-covered boulder cottage while a starry clearing glows softly behind.
Water And Trail Scenes
Paddling a birch bark canoe among tall reeds, a young couple glide quietly together while the lake catches the soft colours of dawn spreading out behind them.
Serving tea to passing hikers from her little forest tea cart, an elderly woman pours from a dented kettle while a mountain trail winds away behind her into the hills.
Cut a second copy of this one and raise just the teapot and cups on foam dots for a bit of gentle lift, then pair it with the berry basket scene for two cards built around forest hospitality.
Baking a mushroom pie in her tree root kitchen, a young woman lifts it from a small oven while a mossy glade spreads softly behind the open roots.
Ladling honey from a stone crock inside a hollow tree honey stall, an elderly woman serves her forest customers while wild heather colours the ground behind her in soft purple.
Quiet Forest Mornings
Drying bundles of herbs on lines strung across her fern-roofed hut, a young woman reaches up to add another bunch while a misty pine ridge rises softly behind.
Cracking hazelnuts by a small fire inside her hazelnut shell room, an elderly woman works steadily while evening mist drifts quietly through the woods behind her.
This gentle fireside scene works well for a thinking of you card, and the soft mist behind leaves plenty of pale space for a handwritten line along the bottom of the card front.
Swinging gently beneath the branches of a great oak, a young woman tips her head back in the open air while a meadow stretches out at the forest edge behind her.
What to Do Next
Pick two or three scenes that go together, print them on matte cardstock, and start cutting: the woods are ready whenever you are.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for printing a forest diorama?
Matte cardstock works best, since it holds fine outlines crisply and takes glue without buckling. Avoid glossy photo paper, which can crack along fold lines and resist adhesive on raised layers.
What printer settings give the cleanest result?
Print at actual size with no scaling, using the best quality or photo setting your printer offers. Choosing actual size keeps every diorama true to the measurements needed for card fronts and journal pages.
How do you turn a flat diorama into a 3D scene?
Print two copies of the same sheet, keep one whole as the background, and cut the inner scene details from the second. Raise those cut pieces on foam adhesive dots over the background for gentle depth.
What card size suits these forest dioramas?
A standard A2 or 5×7 inch card base suits most of these dioramas comfortably, with room left for a mat or border. Trim the printed scene with a thin white edge before mounting it centred on the card front.
Can these dioramas go into a junk journal instead of a card?
Yes, each one works well as a journal spread anchor, glued flat or raised slightly on one edge. Add a small tag, a pressed leaf, or a line of handwriting beside it to finish the page.
