33 Halloween Sketchbook Ideas With Friendly Ghosts and Pumpkin Patch Nights

A halloween sketchbook works best when every page tells a small story instead of just showing a spooky object sitting alone on white paper. These 33 ideas give you a character doing something in a place: a ghost shopping for a hat, a cat riding a pumpkin wagon, kids knocking on a crooked door. Nothing here is gory, nothing is a study sheet, and every scene fits on one page.

Each idea is built for alcohol markers over fineliner, with a deep purple background and warm orange glow doing most of the mood for you. Pick whichever one makes you smile first and start there: you can finish it tonight.

Ghost Trying On A Witch Hat

Start with the shop window frame as a simple rectangle, then draw the ghost inside it before anything else. Keep the ghost’s body a soft rounded triangle, no sharp points, so it reads as friendly rather than eerie.

Add the witch hat sitting slightly crooked on its head, a small shelf of hats behind for context, and one string of orange fairy lights along the window frame. Finish with a few white gel dots on the glass to suggest reflection, and leave the background purple so the orange glow does the rest of the work.

Black Cat Riding A Pumpkin Wagon

Which pen width you choose here changes everything: use a thicker fineliner (around 0.5) for the wagon’s wooden slats and a fine 0.1 for the cat’s whiskers and fur texture, so the two surfaces read as different materials. A single nib width for both makes the whole scene look flat.

Build the wagon first, then stack three or four round pumpkins unevenly so it feels loaded and in motion. Perch the cat on top with its tail curled for balance. One warm orange marker layer on the pumpkins against the purple ground makes them glow without extra shading.

Two Kids In Sheet Costumes At A Crooked Door

Put down three marks in this order: the crooked door first, leaning a few degrees off vertical so the whole house feels playfully haunted. Second, the two sheet-ghost kids standing at the bottom step, one taller than the other. Third, the single porch lantern that lights both of them from the side.

Leave the eye holes and sheet folds for last, once the shapes are placed, so you are not erasing and guessing. A warm orange rectangle around the doorway with the kids’ pale sheets picking up just a touch of that glow finishes the story.

Skeleton Reading By Candlelight

Keep the skeleton’s proportions simple: the skull is about one head tall, and the whole seated body in the armchair fits into roughly three head-heights from skull to the soles of its feet. Measure that against the chair before you commit to the ribs and arms, or the figure ends up too long for its seat.

Give it one open book, one candle on a side table, and let the candle be the only light source in the room. Everything the light does not reach stays deep purple and simple, so the glow around the book and skull carries the whole mood.

Witch’s Cat Cafe Window

Eye level sits low here, around the cafe counter, so you are looking slightly up at the shelves of jars and the cat barista behind them. That low angle makes the counter edge curve gently and the shelf above it lean back, which is what sells the cozy little shop feeling.

Light comes from inside the cafe, spilling warm orange onto the pavement outside through the window glass. Draw the cat first with a tiny apron, then the jars, then the glow last so it sits believably on top of the glass.

If you want a related small scene after this one, the witch and potion ideas in this witch drawing pencil guide pair nicely with a sketchbook page like this.

Pumpkin Patch At Dusk With A Scarecrow Waving

The usual mistake here is drawing every pumpkin the same size in a neat row, which flattens the whole field. Vary the pumpkin sizes and overlap a few of them so the patch reads as going back into distance rather than sitting in a line.

Place the scarecrow slightly off center with one arm raised in a wave, and let its patched clothes pick up a little orange from the low sky behind it. Check the scene halfway through: if every pumpkin still looks identical, go back in with a slightly different fineliner width on two or three of them before adding color.

Mummy Unwrapping A Candy Wrapper

Ten minutes gets you the mummy’s basic wrapped shape, two simple eye gaps, and one candy wrapper held up in its hand, colored and outlined with no extra background detail beyond a flat purple fill. That version alone works fine as a quick page.

Forty minutes adds a small pile of wrapped candies at its feet, a few loose bandage ends trailing on the ground, and a soft orange glow from an unseen porch light just off the edge of the page. The extra time goes into those small story details, not into refining the mummy itself.

Black Cat And Jack-O-Lantern Sharing A Porch Step

Try this on the edges: use dry brush strokes if you are adding any watercolor wash first, or on marker alone, pull the marker lightly along the cat’s silhouette edge rather than filling it solid, so a little purple paper shows through and softens the outline against the night.

Sit the cat and the carved pumpkin close together on a porch step, both lit from one jack-o-lantern candle glow. Keep the carved face simple and round-eyed rather than jagged, so the whole pairing reads as companionable instead of sinister.

Bats Hanging A Banner Between Two Trees

Measuring trick: decide the banner’s width first and let it span exactly the distance between the two tree trunks you draw, rather than drawing the trees first and squeezing the banner in after. That keeps the whole composition balanced instead of lopsided.

Hang three or four small bats from the banner’s corners and center, each gripping the fabric with tiny clawed feet. A single warm light source from below, like a hidden lantern on the ground, throws soft orange up onto the underside of the banner and the bats’ wings.

Witch Stirring A Pot On A Tiny Stove

Light sits low and orange here, coming straight up out of the pot itself, so shadows on the witch’s face and apron fall upward and outward rather than down. That one choice is what makes the scene feel lit by magic rather than by an ordinary lamp.

Draw the pot and its glow first, then build the witch leaning over it with her stirring spoon, letting the underside of her chin and hat catch the brightest orange. Keep her expression amused rather than menacing: a small smile does more work here than any prop.

Owl Perched On A Gravestone Reading The Moon

Keep the gravestone proportion simple: about as wide as the owl’s body and roughly one and a half owl-heights tall, so it reads as a small marker rather than a tombstone-sized slab. That scale keeps the whole page gentle instead of grim.

Perch the owl on top with big round eyes turned up toward a full moon, and let the moon be the single light source, casting a pale glow down over the owl’s feathers. A touch of warm orange from a distant jack-o-lantern off to one side adds a second small light without competing.

Spider Knitting A Web Scarf

First three marks: the spider’s round body, then its eight legs in simple curved lines radiating outward, then the half-finished scarf hanging from two of its front legs like knitting needles. Leave the fine web strands for last, once the spider and scarf shape are settled.

Keep the web-scarf pattern loose and a little uneven, like real knitting in progress, rather than a perfect geometric web. One small lantern glowing nearby in warm orange gives the scene a cozy workroom feeling instead of a creepy corner.

Vampire Baking Cookies In A Tiny Kitchen

Eye level here sits at counter height, looking straight across rather than down, which keeps the kitchen feeling intimate and small. That flat eye level also means the oven door, counter edge, and vampire’s cape hem all line up roughly along the same horizontal band.

Warm orange light pours out of the open oven door as the main source, catching the underside of the vampire’s cape and the tray of cookies. Keep the cookies simple round shapes with tiny bat or pumpkin outlines rather than detailed icing, so they read clearly at a glance.

Frankenstein’s Monster Tending A Pumpkin Garden

The usual mistake with a tall character like this is making the head too large for the body out of habit from cartoon drawing, which tips the whole figure over visually. Keep the head roughly one seventh of the total standing height, closer to real proportion, so he reads as gentle and oversized rather than top-heavy.

Give him a small watering can and a row of pumpkins he is tending with visible care, maybe kneeling slightly. Halfway through, check the hand holding the watering can against the pumpkin size nearby: if it dwarfs the pumpkin completely, scale one of them back before adding color.

Ghost Family Having A Picnic Under A Dead Tree

Ten minutes gets you three simple ghost shapes of different heights sitting around a small picnic blanket, each a rounded triangle with two dot eyes, under one bare tree outline. That alone reads clearly as a family scene.

Forty minutes adds a small picnic basket, a few floating sandwich shapes near the ghosts since they cannot quite hold solid food, and warm orange light filtering through the tree’s bare branches from a low sun or lantern behind it. The extra details are what turn a sketch into a story.

Black Cat Choosing A Pumpkin At The Patch

Vary this one next time by changing which pumpkin the cat is sniffing or pawing at, or by swapping the cat for a different small animal entirely, since the composition itself (one character, a spread of pumpkins, one path leading back into the field) works for many subjects.

For this version, keep the cat low to the ground, nose close to one pumpkin among several, with its tail up in curiosity. A warm orange sunset band low on the purple sky ties the whole patch together without needing much detail in the background itself.

Witch Hat Shop Owner Dusting The Window Display

Thicker fineliner on the shop’s window frame and shelf edges, finer line on the witch’s dusting feather and the lace trim of her apron, keeps the hard architecture separate from her soft, fussy details. That contrast in line weight does a lot of the storytelling without extra color work.

Fill the window shelf with three or four different hats, each a slightly different silhouette, and let one warm hanging lamp above her light the whole display. A few white gel highlights on the glass panes finish the cozy shopkeeper feeling.

Two Pumpkins On A Porch Swing Under Fairy Lights

Measuring trick: let the porch swing’s chain length and the pumpkins’ seated height match roughly what a person’s legs would take up if sitting there, so the whole swing-and-pumpkin pairing reads as a believable, gently funny substitution rather than an odd floating arrangement.

String a simple line of fairy lights along the porch roof above, each bulb a small warm orange dot against the purple dusk. Keep the pumpkins’ carved faces calm and round-eyed, swinging gently side by side.

Raven Delivering A Letter To A Haunted Mansion

Light comes from a single upstairs window of the mansion here, which should be the brightest orange spot on the page, with everything else in cooler purple shadow by comparison. That single bright window is what makes a whole dark mansion silhouette feel inviting instead of foreboding.

Draw the raven mid-flight approaching the window ledge, a small rolled letter in its beak, wings caught in one clear gesture rather than fully spread and fussy. The mansion itself can stay a simple layered silhouette of rooftops and one chimney.

Kids Bobbing For Apples At A Backyard Party

Keep this one to the quick version first: two kids leaning over a round tub, simple bent-over postures with one hand on the tub rim, a few apples floating inside, and a string of lights above for context. That reads clearly even without much background.

If you have more time, add a third child waiting with a towel, a small table of snacks off to one side, and let the warm porch light behind them cast long soft shadows across the grass toward the viewer. The extra figures are what turn a single action into a small party scene.

Ghost Learning To Drive A Tiny Car

Give the car proportions one clear measuring anchor: the ghost’s body width sitting in the driver’s seat should roughly equal the car door’s height, which keeps the whole vehicle from looking either toy-sized or oversized next to its passenger.

Let the ghost’s hands be simple pale shapes gripping the wheel a little too tightly, with a worried but funny expression. One warm orange headlight beam cutting through the purple night does most of the atmosphere work, so keep the car body itself a flat simple silhouette.

Black Cat Librarian Stamping Spell Books

The usual mistake with a desk scene is making the stack of books all the same size and angle, which looks stiff. Tilt two or three book spines at slightly different angles in the stack so it reads as a well-used desk rather than a display shelf.

Give the cat a small round stamp raised mid-tap over an open book, with one desk lamp as the only light source, its orange glow pooling on the pages below and fading out toward the purple edges of the room. Check the lamp’s light circle halfway through to be sure it actually lands on the book, not beside it.

Scarecrow And Crow Sharing A Joke In The Field

Try the edges loose here: let the scarecrow’s straw bits poke out unevenly along its sleeves and collar rather than drawing each strand carefully, since a slightly ragged outline reads as friendlier straw texture than a clean one.

Perch the crow on the scarecrow’s shoulder, both turned toward each other as though mid-conversation, with one small lantern hanging from the scarecrow’s post for warm light. Keep the field behind them simple, just a few vertical corn-stalk lines fading into the purple dusk.

Witch On A Broomstick Delivering Pumpkin Pies

Eye level sits below the witch here, looking up as she flies past, which means the broomstick’s underside and the bottoms of the pie boxes she carries are the parts catching the most light and detail. Everything on top of those shapes stays simpler since the viewer is looking from beneath.

Let a string of porch lights far below mark the ground she is flying over, tiny warm dots against the purple night, while her cape streams out behind her in one smooth curved line.

For more flying witch and potion scenes to pair with this one, the ideas in this witch junk journal collection work well as a companion project.

Pumpkin Family Portrait On The Mantel

Build this one with a clear measuring anchor: line up all the pumpkins’ carved eye-heights roughly along one horizontal band across the mantel, like a family photo, even though the pumpkins themselves vary in size. That shared eye-line is what sells the group-portrait joke.

Add a small string of lights draped along the mantel edge and one tall candle at the end for warm asymmetric light. Keep each pumpkin’s carved expression slightly different: one smiling wide, one surprised, one sleepy, so the family feels like individuals.

Trick-Or-Treaters Comparing Candy Hauls On The Curb

Ten minutes gives you two or three kids in simple costumes sitting on a curb, candy bags tipped open between them, one streetlamp glowing warm orange overhead. That alone tells the whole story of a night’s haul being compared.

Forty minutes adds individual candy shapes spilling out, a jack-o-lantern or two lining the sidewalk behind them, and small shadows cast by the streetlamp stretching long across the pavement. The extra time goes into those ground-level details rather than the kids’ faces, which can stay simple and cheerful.

Ghost Dog Chasing Its Tail Around A Pumpkin

Keep the proportion simple: the ghost dog’s body should curve into roughly a circle shape when chasing its tail, with the pumpkin sitting at the center of that circle like a small sun. That circular composition is what makes the motion read clearly at a glance.

Let the dog’s translucent edges pick up a little warm orange from the pumpkin’s glow where they overlap, and keep its expression goofy and happy rather than ghostly or sad. A few simple motion lines behind its spinning tail finish the energy.

Witch’s Familiar Toad Wearing A Tiny Cape

Which pen to reach for matters here: a fine 0.1 or 0.2 fineliner keeps the toad’s small warty texture dots from merging into mud, while a slightly thicker line defines the cape’s edge so it reads as fabric rather than skin. Mixing those two widths is what keeps a small character legible.

Perch the toad on a mushroom or flat stone, cape draped over its back and tied in a tiny bow at the neck, with one firefly-like glow nearby standing in for warm light since a toad scene often sits closer to the ground than a lantern would reach.

Pumpkin Carving Contest On A Kitchen Table

First three marks: the table surface as a simple horizontal band, then two or three pumpkins in various stages of being carved sitting on top, then the single overhead kitchen light as the source. Leave the carved pulp and seed scatter for last, once the pumpkin shapes themselves are settled.

Give each pumpkin a different finished expression to suggest a friendly contest between carvers rather than one uniform batch, and let the warm kitchen light pool most strongly on the pumpkin closest to being finished.

Haunted Lighthouse Guiding A Tiny Ghost Ship

Eye level sits low and far out, as if viewed from the water, which makes the lighthouse tower lean upward dramatically and its beam sweep out toward the viewer. That low, distant viewpoint is what gives a small page real sense of scale.

Let the lighthouse beam be the single strongest warm orange shape on the page, cutting through deep purple sky and sea, with a small translucent ghost ship sailing within its light. Keep the ship’s sails simple pale triangles rather than detailed rigging.

Spider Family Trick-Or-Treating Door To Door

The usual mistake with multiple small characters is spacing them in a perfectly even row, which looks like a sticker sheet rather than a family walking together. Stagger the spider family’s positions and sizes, parent out front, smallest one trailing slightly behind, so the group reads as mid-stride.

Give the lead spider a small candy bag and let a porch light ahead of them be the warm glow they are walking toward, with the rest of the path staying in cooler purple shadow. Check the staggered spacing halfway through before committing to color.

Werewolf Carving A Pumpkin With Great Care

Keep the proportion grounded: seated and leaning over a pumpkin, the werewolf’s head and the pumpkin should sit roughly at a similar size relation as a person and a large bowl, so he reads as oversized but still working at an ordinary table scale rather than toy-sized.

Give him a small carving knife held with surprising gentleness and a focused, slightly cross-eyed expression as he works on a careful cut. A single warm desk lamp or candle beside the pumpkin lights his hands and the pumpkin’s surface most brightly.

Ghosts Watching A Horror Movie On A Tiny Couch

Vary this one next time by swapping the movie screen’s glow for a different color, like a cooler blue-white for a different kind of film, and by changing how many ghosts are piled onto the couch, since the composition (a couch, a glowing screen, reacting characters) works for many silly groupings.

For this version, line up two or three ghosts on a small couch, one hiding behind a pillow, lit mainly by the screen’s glow in front of them rather than any lantern. Let that screen light be the single source, casting flickering pale color across their faces.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea that made you grin and open your sketchbook to a fresh page tonight. Rough in the main character first, then the setting around it, and save the fineliner details and orange glow for last once the whole scene is blocked in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a halloween sketchbook with alcohol markers?

Look for a mixed media or marker-specific sketchbook with smooth, slightly heavier paper, since thin sketch paper lets alcohol marker ink bleed through to the next page. A toothy watercolor paper is too rough for smooth marker layering, so stay with something made for markers or smooth bristol.

How do I keep these halloween scenes looking cozy instead of scary?

Round the shapes. Rounded ghost bodies, round pumpkin faces with gentle eyes, and soft curved lines throughout keep a scene reading as sweet rather than sinister. Save sharp angles for small accents only, like a witch hat brim, and let warm orange light do most of the friendly mood work.

What is the fastest way to get the orange glow effect with markers?

Pick one light source per scene, like a lantern or window, and build a small gradient of two or three orange and yellow marker shades radiating out from it while everything further away stays in the deep purple of the background. Blending happens mostly where the warm and cool tones meet, not everywhere.

Do I need to ink the whole scene before adding marker color?

Yes, let the fineliner ink dry fully first, usually just a minute or two, before laying marker over it, so the ink does not smear into the color. Most fine black liners made for this purpose are marker-safe once dry, but test a corner of the page first if you are unsure.

How many characters should fit on one sketchbook page?

One to three works best for a single page at this level. A lone character doing something clear, or two to three interacting in one small moment, keeps the story readable at a glance. More than that starts to crowd the page and dilute the warm glow effect that ties each scene together.
