Witch Drawing Pencil: 18 Whimsical Beginner Ideas to Try

A witch drawing pencil in hand is truly one of the most magical combinations a beginner artist can explore. There is something wonderfully freeing about sketching mysterious, whimsical characters — and the good news is that you absolutely do not need years of practice to make something beautiful. Simple pencil strokes can capture an entire mood, and that is exactly what makes this style so perfect for newcomers.

Additionally, the dark fantasy aesthetic is incredibly forgiving. Wobbly lines become enchanting textures, and soft shading creates an ethereal glow that looks intentional every single time. Therefore, whether you are picking up a pencil for the very first time or rediscovering a childhood love of drawing, these 18 ideas are here to cheer you on. Each one is designed to feel approachable, fun, and just a little bit magical.

Whimsical Witch Girl Portrait

Drawing a witch girl portrait is such a fun first project! Start with a simple oval for the face, then add big expressive eyes. Her pointy hat can sit slightly tilted — that little tilt adds so much personality. Don’t worry about perfection; even wobbly lines give her charm.

Next, sketch her hair flowing out from under the hat. Loose, wavy lines work beautifully and feel very forgiving for beginners. Additionally, adding a few stars or tiny moons near her hat makes the whole drawing feel magical. Short pencil strokes create lovely texture in her hair.

For the best results, try working with a good set of graphite pencils. Softer grades like 2B and 4B help you build dark, rich shadows easily. Therefore, having a range of grades makes shading much more approachable. Grab a beginner graphite pencil set and enjoy every mark you make!

Elf Fantasy Character Sketch

Sketching an elf character is a wonderful way to practice faces and pointed ears! Begin with a light oval, then add those signature long, elegant ears extending outward. The ears are actually very simple — just two curved lines tapering to a gentle point. You’ve totally got this!

Meanwhile, give your elf large almond-shaped eyes full of mystery. Long lashes and slightly arched brows add instant fantasy flair. Additionally, flowing hair framing the face softens the whole composition beautifully. Try loose, flowing strokes rather than stiff lines for a more natural feel.

Having the right tools makes character sketching genuinely enjoyable. A good mechanical pencil gives you crisp, fine lines perfect for detailed ears and delicate features. However, a soft 2B pencil works just as well for looser sketches. Check out a mechanical pencil set for drawing to find your new favorite tool!

Mysterious Witch Drawing Pencil Study

A pencil study of a mysterious witch is the perfect way to practice shading and mood. Start by sketching a cloaked figure with a wide-brimmed hat casting shadows across the face. That hidden expression is what makes the drawing feel so intriguing. Shadows are your best friend here!

To build mystery, press harder with your pencil in the shadow areas beneath the hat brim. Lighter, feathery strokes work beautifully for the cloak’s fabric texture. Additionally, leaving bright white paper untouched creates gorgeous highlights that make the whole drawing glow. Contrast is everything in a moody pencil study.

For shading like this, blending stumps are absolute game changers for beginners. They smooth out your pencil strokes into silky, professional-looking gradients effortlessly. Therefore, pairing them with a soft graphite pencil gives stunning results. Try a pencil drawing blending stump set and watch your shading transform overnight!

Crescent Moon Witch Silhouette

A witch silhouette against a crescent moon is one of the most satisfying beginner drawings you can try. Start by drawing a large crescent moon shape near the top of your paper. Then sketch a small witch figure sitting or perching right on the moon’s tip. Simple stick-figure proportions work perfectly as your starting guide!

Next, fill in the entire witch and moon shapes with firm, even pencil strokes. Silhouettes are wonderfully forgiving because details don’t matter — only the outline does. However, adding tiny bats or stars floating around the moon creates beautiful negative space. The contrast between dark figure and bright paper is genuinely stunning.

Smooth, consistent shading fills the silhouette most effectively. A wide, soft pencil like a 6B glides across paper beautifully for bold dark fills. Additionally, a kneaded eraser helps you lift highlights from the moon’s glow area. Pick up a soft graphite pencil 6B drawing and create magic tonight!

Spell Book with Flowing Pages

Drawing an open spell book with flowing pages is such a charming subject and easier than it looks! Begin with a simple open book shape — two rectangular panels meeting at a central spine. Then let the pages curl upward at the corners as if caught by magic wind. Those curling edges add instant life and movement to your drawing.

Next, sketch swirling symbols, stars, and moon phases across the pages. These don’t need to be accurate — invented mystical doodles look wonderfully authentic. Additionally, adding soft shading under each curling page creates beautiful depth and dimension. Even beginners can achieve a really impressive result here!

Paper texture and fine detail really shine with the right pencil choice. A sharp HB pencil handles crisp linework on the book’s spine and symbols perfectly. Meanwhile, a softer 2B adds rich shadow under those flowing page curls. Treat yourself to a HB and 2B pencil drawing set for wonderful versatility in every sketch!

Cauldron with Swirling Steam

A bubbling cauldron is one of the most iconic and beginner-friendly witch subjects you can draw! Start with a wide round pot shape, narrowing slightly at the top opening. Three little legs underneath give it that classic witchy look immediately. Round shapes are very relaxing and forgiving to sketch freehand.

The swirling steam rising from the cauldron is where the real magic happens. Draw loose, flowing S-curves spiraling upward and outward from the opening. Additionally, making some steam wisps curl into tiny skull or star shapes adds delightful personality. Vary the thickness of your steam lines for a more natural, airy feel.

Capturing soft, smoky steam requires gentle pencil pressure and smooth blending. A tortillon blending stump smudges pencil marks into beautifully misty gradients effortlessly. However, even your fingertip works surprisingly well for softening steam edges. Explore a drawing tortillon blending tools set to add professional softness to every magical drawing you create!

Enchanted Broomstick in Flight

Drawing an enchanted broomstick in flight is a wonderfully simple subject with so much expressive potential! Start with a long, slightly diagonal wooden handle — that diagonal angle immediately conveys speed and movement. Then sketch the bristle bundle at one end, fanning outward in loose, energetic strokes. Those messy bristle lines are actually supposed to look wild and free!

Next, add small motion lines trailing behind the bristles to show the broom zooming through the air. Tiny sparks or glowing stars scattered along the handle make it feel truly magical. Additionally, a subtle crescent moon peeking in the background adds wonderful atmospheric depth without much effort at all.

For capturing both crisp lines and soft atmospheric shading, having a few pencil grades is really helpful. Harder pencils like H grade create those sharp, precise handle lines beautifully. Meanwhile, softer grades build the moody dark sky behind your flying broom effortlessly. Find your perfect drawing pencil variety pack and let your broomstick soar across the page!

Tiny Witch Hat with Stars

A tiny witch hat is such a fun and friendly subject to start with! You only need a triangle, a wide brim, and a little buckle. That is honestly it. Even if your lines wobble a little, the hat will still look completely charming — and that is the magic of whimsical art.

Once your basic shape is down, try adding a few stars floating around the brim. Small five-pointed stars are easier than they look. Additionally, a simple hatband with a tiny buckle adds so much personality with very little effort. You are doing better than you think!

For smooth, confident lines on your hat, a good set of drawing pencils makes a real difference. Try the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Pencil Set — it is beginner-friendly and widely loved by artists at every level.

Crystal Ball Glowing Softly

A crystal ball might sound tricky, but it is really just a circle with some soft shading inside. Therefore, do not overthink it! Start by drawing a clean circle — trace a cup or lid if that helps. There is zero shame in that trick, and your circle will look great.

Next, add a gentle glow by shading the edges darker and leaving the center lighter. That contrast is what creates the magical glowing effect. Meanwhile, a few wispy swirls inside the ball suggest mystery without requiring any advanced skills. You are basically drawing clouds inside a sphere!

Blending is key for a soft crystal ball look. A simple blending stump and tortillon set helps you smudge graphite smoothly so your ball looks truly luminous and dreamy.

Raven Perched on a Branch

Ravens look impressive, but they are surprisingly beginner-friendly to draw! The body is basically a teardrop shape, and the head is a small circle. Additionally, the beak is just a simple wedge. Once you see those basic shapes, the whole bird comes together quickly and confidently.

However, the branch is what really sets the mood. A gnarled, slightly twisted branch adds instant whimsy and dark fairy tale energy. Try adding a few small leaves or bare twigs for extra atmosphere. Your raven will look like it belongs in a storybook, and that is a wonderful feeling.

For capturing the deep, rich blacks of raven feathers, a soft pencil grade like 6B is your best friend. Check out the Faber-Castell 9000 Art Set pencils — they range from hard to very soft and give beautiful dark tones.

Potion Bottles and Corks

Potion bottles are one of the most enjoyable things a beginner can draw! They are just simple bottle shapes with corks on top. Therefore, start with a rectangle or oval for the bottle body, add a narrow neck, and pop a little cork on top. Each bottle can be a different shape, which makes the whole drawing more interesting.

Additionally, you can tuck little labels on the bottles or add tiny bubbles floating inside them. These small details are completely optional, but they make your drawing feel extra magical. Even a simple arrangement of three bottles at different heights looks beautifully composed and intentional.

Smooth, clean outlines really make potion bottles shine on paper. A mechanical pencil set for drawing gives you precise fine lines that are perfect for bottle shapes and those tiny fun details.

Delicate Witch Drawing Pencil Moon Scene

A moon scene is perfect for beginners because it is all about simple shapes and soft atmosphere. Start with a crescent moon — it is just two overlapping circles where you erase the overlap. However, the real fun begins when you add a tiny silhouette of a witch flying across it. That classic image is iconic for a reason!

For the witch silhouette, keep it simple: a small figure on a broomstick, hat pointing up, cloak trailing behind. You do not need detail here — the silhouette does all the work. Meanwhile, a few stars scattered around the moon complete the scene beautifully without any extra effort.

Soft shading around the moon creates a gorgeous glowing halo effect. A kneaded eraser for drawing highlights is amazing for lifting graphite gently to create that soft moonlight glow on your paper.

Hooded Cloak Figure in Mist

A hooded figure sounds dramatic, but it is wonderfully forgiving to draw! The cloak is mostly just flowing curved lines, and the hood hides the face — meaning you do not need to draw facial features at all. Therefore, this subject is secretly one of the easiest and most atmospheric drawings you can make as a beginner.

The mist effect is created simply by letting your shading fade softly at the bottom of the figure. Additionally, you can smudge the edges of the cloak slightly so it blends into the background. That soft, hazy quality gives your drawing an ethereal, mysterious mood that looks truly stunning.

For creating that misty, blended atmosphere, smooth drawing paper makes a big difference. Try Strathmore 400 Series drawing paper — it takes graphite beautifully and blends like a dream for soft moody effects.

Fairy Tale Lantern Glowing

A glowing lantern is one of those drawings that looks complex but is actually very manageable for beginners. Start with a simple rectangular cage shape, add a pointed top, and draw a little flame inside. As a result, you immediately have something that looks magical and detailed without requiring advanced skills. You will surprise yourself!

However, the real trick is creating the glow effect around the lantern. Shade the area just outside the lantern’s glass panels darker, while keeping the area nearest the flame very light. This contrast between dark and light is what makes the glow feel warm and real. Additionally, a few light rays extending outward add extra enchantment.

For a detailed lantern with beautiful contrast, quality sketch pencils help enormously. The Prismacolor Premier Graphite Drawing Pencils offer a wonderful range of values perfect for glowing light effects.

Dark Forest Treeline at Dusk

Drawing a dark forest treeline is honestly one of the most satisfying beginner projects you can try. The great news is that trees are wonderfully forgiving — no two look exactly alike in nature, so yours will always look right. Simply start with tall, slightly uneven vertical lines for the trunks, then build outward with soft, scratchy strokes for bare branches.

As you work upward, let the branches thin out naturally toward the tips. Meanwhile, vary your pencil pressure to create depth — press harder for the closest trees and go lighter for trees further back. This simple trick makes the whole scene feel surprisingly real and moody, almost like magic.

Additionally, adding a few wispy clouds or a pale moon peeking through the branches instantly gives your forest that witchy dusk atmosphere. You can achieve so much with just a basic pencil! For smooth, responsive lines, consider picking up a set of drawing pencils for beginners to make your forest truly shine.

Floating Magical Rune Symbols

Rune symbols might sound intimidating, but they are actually made of simple straight lines and angles — perfect for beginners! Think of each rune as a tiny geometric doodle. Therefore, you can practice individual symbols separately before arranging them together into a floating, scattered composition that feels genuinely magical.

To make the runes look like they are floating, try drawing faint circular glows around each one using very light, circular pencil strokes. Additionally, varying the size of each symbol — some large, some tiny — creates a wonderful sense of depth and movement across the page. A few carefully placed dots scattered between them tie everything together beautifully.

Meanwhile, small details like tiny cracks inside the runes or faint trailing lines give the illusion of glowing energy. This is a wonderfully relaxing drawing exercise because every mark feels intentional and mystical. For crisp, clean line work on your rune details, a mechanical pencil for drawing is an absolute game changer!

Witch Drawing Pencil Star Map

A witch’s star map is such a dreamy subject to draw, and the best part is it naturally celebrates imperfection. Stars are simply small dots and delicate connecting lines — nothing complicated at all! However, the arrangement of those tiny marks across the page is what creates that breathtaking, celestial feeling every artist loves.

Start by lightly dotting your star positions across the paper first. Then, gently connect related clusters with thin, straight lines to form constellations. As a result, the composition instantly feels purposeful and mystical rather than random. Adding a decorative circular border around the star cluster makes the whole map feel like an ancient magical artifact.

Additionally, labeling constellations with small written runes — or simply leaving them unlabeled — both work beautifully in this style. Shading the background very lightly with wide, soft strokes makes the white stars pop dramatically. For that perfect soft background texture, try a blending stump and pencil set to blend your shading smoothly!

Enchanted Owl with Wide Eyes

Owls are honestly one of the friendliest animals to draw because their round shapes are so approachable for beginners. Start with two overlapping circles for the body and head — that foundation makes everything else fall naturally into place. However, the real magic of an enchanted owl lives entirely in those enormous, expressive eyes.

For the eyes, draw two large circles and fill them with detailed concentric rings — this creates that wide, hypnotic, magical gaze instantly. Meanwhile, adding tiny reflected light spots inside each eye brings the whole owl to life in the most satisfying way. Feather texture around the face is easier than it looks — just short, overlapping curved strokes radiating outward from the center.

Additionally, surrounding your owl with small floating stars or crescent moons gives the drawing that wonderfully witchy enchanted atmosphere. You are truly creating a little piece of fantasy art, and that is something to celebrate! To capture every fine feather detail beautifully, consider treating yourself to a fine tip sketching pencil set for your next session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pencils are best for a witch drawing pencil project as a beginner?

For a witch drawing pencil project, start with an HB pencil for outlines and a 2B or 4B for shading. These grades are widely available and very forgiving. Additionally, a simple mechanical pencil works beautifully for fine details. You do not need an expensive set to begin — however, having two or three grades makes a noticeable difference in depth.

How do I make my witch drawing look more whimsical and magical?

Adding small details transforms a simple sketch into something enchanting. For example, tiny stars, crescent moons, or swirling smoke around your subject instantly create a fantasy mood. Additionally, soft shading with a blending stump adds an ethereal glow. Therefore, focus on atmosphere rather than perfection — whimsical art thrives on a little looseness and charm.

Can a complete beginner really draw a witch character with a pencil?

Absolutely, and you should feel great about trying! Witch characters are built from simple shapes — an oval for a face, triangles for a hat, flowing curves for a cloak. Therefore, even very basic shape knowledge is enough to get started. Additionally, the dark fantasy style is forgiving, so expressive lines and soft shading always look intentional and beautiful.

How long does a beginner witch pencil drawing usually take?

Most beginner-friendly witch drawings take between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the level of detail you add. However, a simple silhouette or single character can be finished in as little as 15 minutes. Additionally, there is no rush — taking your time with shading and small details is part of the fun. Enjoy the process rather than racing to the finish.

Do I need special paper for pencil witch drawings?

Standard printer paper works fine when you are just starting out. However, a smooth sketch pad or cartridge paper gives your pencil a much nicer feel and holds shading more beautifully. For example, Strathmore 400 Series sketch pads are a popular and affordable choice. Additionally, slightly textured paper adds a subtle depth that enhances the whimsical dark fantasy mood.
