Garden junk journal ideas work best when the pages already feel like they came from someone’s potting shed, so this kit gives you twenty finished scenes, four repeating patterns and five lined pages built around clay pots, cabbage rows, greenhouse glass and climbing roses. Nothing here needs cutting into shapes or folding into pockets: every sheet is complete on its own and goes straight onto a journal page.
Print on matte cardstock around 160 to 200gsm so the washes stay crisp and the paper does not curl, set your printer to its best or photo quality, and trim each page to your journal’s size before gluing it in. The rest of this kit tells you what to write, tuck or pair on each one.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Shed and Tool Pages
Write the names of three seed varieties you planted this season along the bottom edge, right under the row of clay pots.
Pair this page with the Seed Packet Pattern background from later in this set: use the pattern as a facing page so the rack of rakes and forks sits opposite a wall of tiny paper packets.
Leave the hooks slightly bare on one side so you can glue a small photo of your own shed tools over the gap.
Tea-stain the top edge of this page before gluing it in, so the stacked pots look like they have sat in a sunny shed window for years.
Let the stain pool slightly near the corner rather than running it in a straight line, it reads more like real age that way.
Fits best on a page facing the Vegetable Bed section further on, since both pages carry the same soft green of new seedlings pushing up through dark soil.
Vegetable Garden Pages
The usual mistake here is leaving the page too bare around the cabbages, so this scene fills the bed edge to edge with soil, stakes and a low fence to keep it grounded.
Glue a pressed leaf or a seed packet corner over the fence line if you want to add texture without covering the main rows.
What did the soil look like the day you pulled your first carrot this year? Leave a line of space at the bottom of this page for that answer.
Tear the bottom edge of this page roughly before gluing it in, so the bean poles look like they rise straight out of the journal’s spine.
A torn edge also hides any slight mismatch if your printed page runs a little short of the next one.
Place this one right after the Carrot and Radish Rows page so the two sit as a pair, the pale carrot tops on the left giving way to tall red-tipped tomato stakes on the right.
This page suits a journal made for someone who grows for the harvest table more than the flower bed, a parent or grandparent who always has a pumpkin by the back door come autumn.
Leave the vine curling toward the page edge so it feels like it continues onto the next sheet.
Greenhouse and Glasshouse Pages
Greenhouse glass painted in pale washes lets light fall across the whole page, so tomato vines, hanging baskets and a watering can all sit under one soft glow.
Write the date you moved your seedlings under glass along the bottom border, it makes a quick seasonal marker to flip back to later.
The five-minute version: skip the full greenhouse scene and glue in just this shelf of trays, it reads as a smaller companion piece beside a larger glasshouse page.
Cut a narrow window into this page before gluing it down, so a photo tucked on the layer beneath peeks through the trellis gaps.
Keep the window small, just enough to show a corner of the photo rather than the whole thing.
Basil, thyme, mint, rosemary: note which one keeps dying on you and which one you cannot kill, right along the bottom edge of this windowsill scene.
Flower Garden Pages
Climbing roses cover the gate from post to post here, with a few petals painted loose on the path below so the page never feels too tidy.
Pair it with the Lace and Rose Border lined page later in this set for a spread that carries the same pink through both sheets.
Keep a short list of what is blooming this week along the base of this page, zinnias, cosmos, sweet peas, so each entry becomes a small record of the season passing.
The usual mistake with a lavender page is making the border too thin, so this one runs a full thick hedge of lavender along both sides of a stone path to anchor the whole sheet.
Leave the path itself mostly bare so you can glue a small pressed flower directly onto the stone.
Good for a gift journal made for someone with a small balcony rather than a full garden, since this scene fits a windowsill instead of open ground.
Fold this page gently down the middle before gluing it in, so the arbor seems to open like a small doorway when the journal lies flat.
A soft crease works better than a sharp one here, the watercolor wash can crack if you press the fold too hard.
Worth gluing in near the start of a new gardening journal, since muddy boots by an open shed door make a quiet first page before the planting pages begin.
Tuck a real pressed leaf or a small dried flower under the basket handle once this page is glued in, it sits naturally against the painted vegetables.
Choose something flat, a fern frond or a single pressed violet works better than anything with bulk.
Background Papers
Painted stillness suits a quiet corner of the journal, a lone birdbath with a stone finch asks for nothing more than a soft lawn and hedge behind it, filled in rather than left white.
A repeating field of small paper seed packets, hand trowels and twine balls, suited to a cover sheet, a backing behind a photo of your own garden, or a divider between the vegetable and flower sections of the journal.
Rows of stacked terracotta pots in varying sizes tile this page, good under a potting shed photo, as a lining behind pressed herb clippings, or as the opening cover of the whole journal.
A diamond lattice of thin green trellis lines with tiny climbing leaves threading through it, useful behind a rose or bean page, as a quiet divider, or as a backing for a planting calendar.
Lined Writing Pages
Small watering cans alternate with single leaves across this page, suited to a cover for the whole journal, a backing behind a seed packet you glue in later, or a divider before the lined pages.
Use the lines here for a running planting log: what you sowed, the date, and how it turned out by harvest, one row per entry down the page.
Keep a running tally here of what came out of the garden each week, a short list of vegetables and a rough count, useful for comparing one season to the next.
Write a letter to next year’s garden here, what to plant more of, what to skip, what finally climbed the way you hoped it would.
Good for a simple gift list of tools or seeds someone mentioned wanting, or a shopping list for the next trip to the garden centre.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, trim each page to your journal’s size, and start with whichever scene matches what is actually growing in your garden right now. Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for these garden pages?
Matte cardstock around 160 to 200gsm holds the washes well without curling or letting ink bleed through. Avoid glossy photo paper, it reflects too much light and the muted colors lose their softness. Lighter paper works in a pinch but may wrinkle slightly once glued in.
What printer settings should I use?
Choose your printer’s best or photo quality setting and let it use more ink than the standard draft mode. This keeps the soft color bleeds looking intentional rather than patchy. Print one test page first to check the colors match your screen before running the full set.
Do I need to trim the pages before gluing them in?
Yes, most printable pages print slightly larger than a standard junk journal, so trim each sheet to match your journal’s page size first. A paper trimmer gives cleaner edges than scissors, especially on the straight borders of the lined pages.
Can I color or touch up the printed pages by hand?
Watercolor pencils blend well over the printed washes if you want to deepen a shadow or add a highlight. Keep any additions light, since the pages already carry a full painted background and too much extra color can flatten the soft effect.
What do I use to stick the pages into my journal?
An acid free glue stick works for most pages and dries flat without wrinkling the paper. For pages you plan to tea-stain or tear first, let any staining dry completely before applying glue so the edges do not go soft.
