Table of Contents
This set of steampunk junk journal pages gives you 32 full sheets built around brass, steam and Victorian invention, so you can fill a whole journal without hunting for matching paper. The kit opens with 22 scene pages, each one a different airship, workshop or mechanical creature, then moves into 5 seamless background patterns of cogs and blueprints, and closes with 5 lined writing pages framed in gears and rivets.
Print every sheet on matte cardstock heavy enough to take glue without buckling, set your printer to its best photo or high quality setting, and trim each page to your journal size once the ink has dried. From there it is just scissors, glue and an evening at the table.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Sky and Machine Pages
An airship drifting above rooftops and factory chimneys makes a strong opening page for the whole journal, the first sheet a reader sees when the cover opens.
Tuck a small printed boarding ticket or a folded luggage tag onto this one before you glue it down, right where the mooring ropes meet the platform. A single line like “destination unknown” written along the dock edge turns the whole page into the start of a travel entry.
Leave room near the airship’s hull for a second scrap, maybe a torn timetable, so the page holds two layers instead of one flat image.
Pair this page with the cogs and blueprints background from later in this set: glue a strip of the pattern paper along the bottom edge like a horizon line before adding the balloon scene on top.
The usual mistake with a busy mechanical scene like this is cutting it down too small, which hides the gears that make it interesting. Keep the whole sheet intact and let it be a full spread on its own rather than squeezing it into a corner.
Workshop and Invention Pages
A cluttered workbench covered in brass gears, half built contraptions and an open blueprint gives the eye plenty to rest on.
Leave the lower third of the page free of glued scraps so there is still space for a short note about the invention taking shape here, whether that is a real project or a made up one for the journal’s story.
Good for the journal keeper who collects real antique odds and ends: this page gives her a surface to rest a pressed flower or a scrap of lace right over the desk, since the painted clutter underneath hides the seam.
What would this room sound like at midnight. Write the answer along the bottom margin in small letters, then glue the page in facing a quieter scene so the two pages read like one held breath.
A heavy iron printing press with pipes of steam curling off it anchors this page as a workshop scene rather than a drawing room one.
If you keep a cookbook style section in your journal, this page pairs oddly well with recipe cards glued beside it, the ink and steam motif echoing a kitchen full of its own machinery. See the cookbook junk journal ideas for that kind of pairing.
For the five minute version, skip gluing this one in whole and instead cut just the compass and the corner of the blueprint, saving the rest of the sheet for another page later.
Timepiece and Treasure Pages
A pocket watch with its case open shows every gear and spring inside, more treasure than tool once it sits on the page like this.
This one suits the gift journal made for someone who collects real antique keys, since the painted keys on the page give her a place to glue one small genuine key over the top.
Tear the edge of the sheet gently before gluing it in, so the torn line echoes the worn metal of the chain itself.
An hourglass sitting beside an unrolled star chart covers almost thirty words and nothing more, leaving the picture itself to carry the page.
The usual mistake here is treating this as a strange or morbid page and tucking it at the back of the journal. Place it instead near the pocket watch pages, since all three share the same language of gears standing in for something alive.
Creatures and Companions Pages
A brass mechanical owl perched on an old iron lamp post watches over the street below, its glass eyes catching the last of the evening light.
A small clockwork dragonfly resting on a painted leaf gives the journal a lighter moment after the heavier workshop pages.
Who is this page for: the reader who loves the softer, more whimsical side of steampunk rather than the grim factory one, so place it near any botanical or garden pages already in her journal.
Write a short line about what this spider has been building all night, right along the edge of its web, before you glue the page into a spread.
This page works best placed opposite the airship dock earlier in the set, so a reader turning the page moves from leaving by air to arriving by road.
City and Street Pages
A foggy street lined with gas lamps and factory smoke gives the journal its sense of place, the backdrop every other invention seems to belong to.
If your journal already leans toward other old world cities, the Parisian building paintings set makes a gentle companion for comparing two very different takes on a city street.
A street vendor’s stall piled with brass trinkets, gears and small mechanical curiosities makes a natural spot for a shopping list or a line about a found treasure.
A lighthouse fitted with a brass steam powered lantern sits at the edge of the city, half invention and half old fashioned guide for ships.
For a five minute version, cut only the top of the lighthouse with its lantern room and glue that alone into a smaller spread, saving the rocky base for another page.
A grand train station with an iron and glass roof overhead, steam curling from the engine below, closes out the scene pages with motion and noise.
This page suits the reader building a travel style journal rather than a daily diary, since the map motif pairs naturally with the travel junk journal ideas for anyone mixing real trips with invented steampunk ones.
Background Papers
Use this behind a photograph of a real antique clock or tool, as a lining for the journal’s opening pages, or printed small for a cover panel in the same copper and sepia palette as the rest of the set.
Good under mechanical diagrams or invention sketches, as a pocket lining for the workshop section, or as a simple cover wrap for the whole journal when you want a quieter page among the busier scenes.
Works well behind a photo of a handwritten letter, as a textured cover for a smaller insert booklet, or torn into strips for binding tabs along the journal’s spine.
Use this behind a timeline page, as a lining for a pocket holding tickets and stubs, or printed as endpapers at the very front and back of the finished journal.
Suited to a cover sheet for the whole kit, a background behind a group photo from a themed gathering, or a lining for the very back pocket of the journal where keepsakes collect.
Lined Writing Pages
Good for a packing list before a journey, a short letter addressed to next year, or notes on an invention still only half finished in your head.
Use the ruled lines for a list of tools still needed, a diagram’s caption, or a few lines about a day spent somewhere unfamiliar.
Write a menu from an imagined formal dinner, a few lines describing a found object, or a short letter never meant to be sent.
Suited to a travel log entry, a wish list of places not yet visited, or a short note tucked beside an airship page elsewhere in the journal.
Good for a list of names, a set of measurements for a project, or a closing page summing up everything gathered in the journal so far.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, let the ink dry fully, then trim and start laying out your spreads, starting with the airship pages at the front and letting the quieter lined pages close each section.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for these steampunk junk journal pages?
Matte cardstock between 80 and 110 pounds holds up well to glue and ink without warping. Avoid glossy photo paper, since it resists glue and can crack along fold lines. A warm toned or cream cardstock also blends nicely with the aged look already painted into each page.
What printer settings give the best colour on these pages?
Choose your printer’s highest quality or photo setting and select matte or plain paper in the dialogue box rather than glossy. This keeps the sepia and copper tones from printing too dark or too saturated. Always print one test page first to check the colours before running the full set.
What size should I trim the pages to?
Standard junk journals run close to A5 or a similar half letter size, so trim to whichever matches your covers and binding. Leave a small margin uncut on scene pages until you decide how they sit in a spread. Lined pages can be trimmed exactly to size right away since there is no image to protect.
Do I need anything special to colour or finish these pages?
Nothing extra is required since every page prints in full colour and edge to edge. A fine tip pen works well for writing on the lined pages or adding a short caption to a scene. Keep a glue stick on hand for layering pages or adding small personal keepsakes on top.
Can I mix these with other junk journal pages I already have?
Yes, the sepia and copper palette sits comfortably beside most vintage or travel themed pages. For ideas on blending styles and building a full journal from scratch, the junk journaling handbook walks through layout and binding basics.
