This steampunk alice in wonderland junk journal kit gives Wonderland a set of brass gears and a pocket full of blueprints. Twenty five scene pages carry Alice, the Rabbit, the Hatter and the rest through a clockwork version of the story, no two pages alike. Five seamless background pages and six lined writing pages round out the set so the journal has covers, fillers and space to write, not just pictures.
Print on matte cardstock heavy enough to take glue without buckling, around 110 to 170 gsm works well. Set the printer to its best or photo quality so the copper and teal inks stay rich, then trim each sheet to the journal size before binding. Nothing here needs assembly: every page prints flat and ready to use.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Alice and the Rabbit Hole
Glue a small cut-out ticket stub or a scrap printed with a clock face onto the corner here, as if it fell from the Rabbit’s waistcoat pocket mid-chase.
Alice tumbles past a shaft lined with brass pipework, floating teacups and drifting pages of a torn blueprint, caught mid fall in a long copper-toned chute.
Pair this page with the Gears and Keys Pattern from the background section: use the pattern as a facing page so the little door feels set into a wall of matching hardware.
The door’s lock here is a full mechanism of its own, with a dial, a lever and a tiny brass plate, more machine than furniture.
The usual mistake with a crowded scene like this is adding too many small gears until the caterpillar disappears. Keep the cogs along the mushroom stem only and leave the cap plain brass.
A cluttered worktable holds the shrinking bottle alongside brass measuring tools, a pressure valve and a half-finished mechanical key, lit by a single hanging gauge lamp.
Mad Tea Party Pages
Write the date of your own tea break in the blank steam curling from the spout, a small habit that turns this page into a tiny daily log.
For the five minute version of this page, skip coloring the full table setting and simply outline the Hare and the clock centerpiece in copper pencil, leaving the rest as soft sepia wash.
This one is a quiet gift page for a journal made for someone who loves naps and small comforts: the Dormouse sleeps inside a teapot fitted with a tiny hatch door and a porthole window.
What usually goes wrong on a page this busy with watches is giving every one the same size and shade. Vary three or four of them larger and brighter in copper, the rest smaller and duller in sepia.
How would you arrange your own gathering around a table like this. Write a guest list or a seating plan along the border while the question is fresh.
Cheshire Cat and the Wood
A grin built from interlocking brass teeth hangs in the air above a half-formed body of turning cogs, the rest of the cat fading into drifting gearwork and steam.
Tuck a small folded note or riddle written on scrap paper behind this page before gluing it in, something to find again later when flipping through.
The cat sits mostly assembled this time, perched on a branch fitted with a brass plaque, one paw a simple cog mechanism rather than fur and claw.
Trees here grow trunks of riveted brass pipe with gear-shaped leaves, a lone lantern hanging from one low branch to light the path between them.
Pair this with the Blueprint Border Pattern from the background pages, using the pattern as a journal cover so the signpost page feels like the first page inside a technical notebook.
Riding and Chasing Scenes
Alice rides the caterpillar now fitted with brass legs and a steam funnel, a pair of copper goggles pushed up on her forehead as the pair move through drifting smoke.
The usual mistake with a vehicle page is making the carriage too small to read clearly. Give it most of the page width and keep the Rabbit and background details smaller around it.
Try tea-staining just the bottom edge of this page before gluing it in, a quick way to suggest dust kicked up along the garden path Alice is running down.
A short list fits well in the margin here: three rules for a made-up game, written as if copied from the Queen’s own rulebook of mismatched mechanical equipment.
For the five minute version, outline just the caterpillar and the central mushroom in copper pencil and leave the surrounding tools as loose sepia wash.
Queen and Castle Pages
The Queen stands at the helm of a small airship built from a playing card hull and brass rigging, a card-suit flag snapping from a mast fitted with a tiny gauge.
This page suits a gift journal made for a reader who loves collecting little details: the card soldiers each carry a different small brass tool, worth finding one by one.
Glue a small paper flag or banner scrap at the top of the tower here, a quick way to mark this page as belonging to the Queen’s court before the next spread.
What would you plead if called before a court built from gears and playing cards. Write a short, playful answer along the bottom border of the page.
Place this page in a spread facing the Heart Castle Clock Tower page, letting the courtroom scene sit directly across from the tower that watches over it.
Alice stands before a raised brass bench, the King and Queen seated above a panel of dials, card jurors lined along one side holding small slates.
Background Papers
An all-over scatter of small brass gears, skeleton keys and watch faces in copper and teal, suited to lining a cover, backing a photo of a Wonderland costume or filling a page border.
Fine technical sketch lines of cogs and pipework run edge to edge here, good under a sepia photo, as a cover sheet or lining a pocket page elsewhere in the journal.
Heart and spade shapes alternate with small cog motifs in a damask layout, ready behind a portrait photo, as a journal cover or lining the inside of a card pocket section.
Vertical brass pipe stripes with rivets and small gauges run top to bottom, a steady pattern suited to a cover sheet, a photo backing or filling space between busier pages.
Open and closed pocket watches of different sizes scatter loosely across the sheet, good for lining a cover, backing a photo of a favorite clock or filling a quiet page.
Use the ruled lines here for a short account of a day spent making this journal, a packing list for a tea party of your own, or a letter to open next year.
Lined Writing Pages
Good for a list of things you are curious about, a few lines on a recent daydream, or notes on a journal page still to be made.
Write an actual guest list here, a tea party menu, or a short note to whoever ends up reading this journal one day.
Fits a riddle you want to remember, a short list of things that made you smile this week, or a line about something that disappeared too soon.
Suited to a mock decree written in the Queen’s voice, a list of house rules for your own little kingdom, or plain notes about your week.
Good for a letter to next year, a wish list of Wonderland scenes you would still like to paint, or a short reflection on the kit once it is finished.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, trim each sheet to size, and start building spreads from the Alice and the Rabbit Hole section forward. For more brass and gearwork to round out the journal’s covers and pockets, the steampunk junk journal pages and the fantasy junk journal pages both pair well with this set.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for this kit?
Matte cardstock around 110 to 170 gsm holds the copper and teal inks well without letting glue soak through. Lighter paper curls once wet glue is applied, so avoid plain printer paper if the pages will be stuck into a journal. Matte finish also keeps the sepia background looking aged rather than glossy.
What printer settings give the richest brass and copper tones?
Set the printer to its best or photo quality setting and choose a matte or heavyweight paper type if the driver offers one. This slows the print slightly but lays down more ink, which keeps the copper and brass tones from printing flat or washed out.
What size should I print the pages at?
Standard junk journal size runs around 5 by 7 inches or A5, both of which fit neatly on a trimmed letter or A4 sheet with margin to spare. Print at full page size first, then trim down, rather than shrinking the image before printing, so detail in the gears and blueprint lines stays sharp.
Do I need to color or finish these pages at all?
No coloring is required since every page prints in full color and is complete on its own. A few fine tip pens in black or sepia are handy if you want to add handwritten dates, captions or extra linework on top once a page is glued in.
Can these pages mix with a regular Alice in Wonderland journal?
Yes, the copper and teal palette sits well alongside softer storybook pages if you want a hybrid journal. For a softer, non-mechanical set of Wonderland pages to mix in, the Alice in Wonderland junk journal pages make a gentle companion set.
